Jay Gruden should look to get a solid OC job this offseason with an established team with known weapons in order to build his stock again. OCs like Kellen Moore, Eric Bieniemy, Josh McDaniels and Kevin Stefanski will all be looked at for HC opportunities, so they could be fits there. He also could get hired as part of a new staff as OC if a team decides to make a change.

As a fall back, Jay could always become an assistant with Jon in Oakland/Las Vegas, as you mentioned. They have worked together before.

How does Lovie Dovie Smith still have a job at Illinois? Look at these numbers:

2016 3-9 [2-7]
2017 2-10 [0 fer 9]
2018 4-8 [2-7]
2019 2-3 [0-2]

Yeesh. Dude is 11-30 and 4-25 in B1G games. 03-lmfao So glad I'm not an Illinois fan after the shat show of coaches they've had. Remember when folks thought Ron Zook was bad?

I casually follow U of I since I was a childhood fan (plenty of family went there) and they're the flagship of my state (even though they're well behind Notre Dame and other Big Ten fan support in Chicagoland). My impression is that he's still here since he has a giant buyout and he basically came in and publicly stated that the first two years he'd completely blow it up with underclassmen, so people basically write those off. But in year four you need to beat MAC teams at home (albeit a decent EMU program) and can't lose by three scores to Minnesota, especially in the West. I like the Monken idea however,

Ron Zook’s final 5 years consisted of 3 winning seasons and a Rose Bowl.

That should never get you fired from Illinois. Lo and behold, Illinois has had no winning seasons in the 8 years since.

Zook was also a colorful personality who never had a dull moment. If it wasn’t entertaining soundbytes in press conferences, it was being up 14-13 over IU, scoring a TD, and going for 2 because he “forgot the score” 03-lmfao

Personally, I would’ve loved NIU hiring Zook the Crook.

I can get the rationale behind getting rid of him. Zook was notorious for poor game management and an aura of underachieving (big complaints of him at Florida as well), with the team losing six straight after starting 6-0 in 2011 I don't blame them for wanting a change (IIRC they had a new AD who wanted his own guy). The issue was the execution, MAC fans like us could tell you that Tim Beckman wasn't a very good hire especially when the likes of Jim McElwain, Mike Leach, Justin Fuente, PJ Fleck, Bryce Harsin, and Matt Rhule were hired that offseason or a year later. Shame for them that Dave Doeren was hired a year earlier or else he would've been perfect.

Years back I thought Zook might've tried to take a Frank Solich route and spend the rest of his career rebuilding a random G5 school, but that probably isn't happening now. The dude is 65 and currently an analyst at Maryland after a special teams gig in the AAF.

They're never going to compete doing the same thing as the big programs. Time to do something different.

The advantage that Army has that has allowed them to play big time teams like OU and Michigan close is the fact that the offense is something exotic these teams are not used to seeing every year. If Rutgers were to employ the offense it loses that mystique with their Big 10 East opponents because it's now something you have to prepare for every single year starting in spring camp.

That's a lot easier said than done. While Clemson (your team) may not have had much trouble with Georgia Tech, Paul Johnson punched above their weight a lot of years. Same thing with Navy in the AAC, as we see them pulling upsets in conference play that shouldn't be happening based on pure talent level.

Both years that UCF played Navy, we should have blown them out. Instead, both were very tight games, and that was even with Scott Frost as the practice squad QB the first year with his experience running the option at full speed. It's very hard to practice against that offense for a few days in the summer and a few days the week of the game.

And regardless, nothing else is working for Illinois or Rutgers, so what do they have to lose?

Even though the guy is 3 years younger than me, I want Kellen Moore to be considered for Falcons HC. We have way too much offensive talent that is being wasted. Hire him a proven DC and let's work on getting back to the Super Bowl.

Navy vs AAC is not a valid consideration because the talent levels are far more similar than what Rutgers would face in the Big 10. Just in their division they face three, maybe four teams that routinely recruit the type of defensive athletes to shut down the triple option: fast linemen and linebackers and big DBs who are capable of making tackles in space. Rest assured, if someone hires Monken there will be a parade of defensive coaches coming to Clemson to pick Brent Venables brain on how to defend the triple option because once Coach V figured it out in 2012 Georgia Tech's offense under Johnson wasn't a threat anymore and teh only loss we had to the Jackets was due to the offense self-destructing when Watson went down to injury.

Some of my picks:

Clay Helton, USC - too much talent not to be a title contender
Lovie Smith, Illinois - needs to make a bowl
Chad Morris, Arkansas - PigFans are getting restless
Kalani Sitake, BYU - being #3 in the state of Utah doesn't sit well
Chris Ash, Rutgers - like Lovie, needs to make a bowl

After first weekend in November...

Clay still on the list
Lovie is breathing easier
Chad is burning
Kalani is still on the list
Ash is GONE

saw a really interesting point that the early signing period moved into December is making that 1st recruiting class for incoming coaches trash basically, and totally making that 2nd year jump that we see a lot of times a whole lot tougher.....

So it turns out it's not a good idea for a bad team to hire a coach with an unimpressive coaching record and wildly different play style than their previous coach. It was a weird hire at the time that ended up even worse than expected.

Wilder @ ODU has a pretty darn hot seat. It'll be a melt down if he is retained. At a minimum he's gotta fire everyone on the offensive side of the house to keep the majority of the fans.

I think Arky waits and sees how Auburn finishes the season. Gus and the admin on the Plains might agree to their separate ways allowing the ‘Backs to hire The coach they really want.

We all know Malzahn is from Arkansas, but if he was going to leave Auburn, and if he had the opportunity to go to either Florida State or Arkansas, he'd take the FSU job.

Gus has been a lightning rod in Arkansas for years. There is a lot of tension among Arkansas boosters, with Gus in the middle. An Arkansas fan can explain it better than me, but it is a power struggle between the Little Rock/rest of the state-based boosters and the Northwest Arkansas-based boosters. Gus is associated with the NWA group through his stint as a local high school coach. Couple that with the situation where Gus was first hired as an assistant by Houston Nutt, then how he left, and there are reasons why the powers that be will stay away from him. Again, there are Arkansas folks that can explain this better than I can.

Of course, situations change, and the time could be right for these parties to unite. We will see.

If I were them, I'd take Norvell. IIRC, they looked past him to hire Chad Morris.
