Bowers
We can clearly see he is the better pure passing QB. Great arm. What has worried me is his blunders that have cost us 2 games. When he fell down before handing off the ball to Harbison on the 2 yard line cost us that game yesterday. 21-3 is much different than 17-3 in wet conditions. And last week vs. Vandy he has another error on a trick play that would have easily gone for a TD if it’s executed. That TD would tie the game with momentum in favor of NIU.

He also doesn’t want to run for a first down when there’s 10 yards of open grass in front of him and he hangs on to the ball way too long and takes deflating sacks. Just throw the ball away. It’s Jekyll and Hyde with him right now. The talent is clearly there, just isn’t executing.

He seems out of sync. Thinking and not reacting. Like Hammock, he gets these first games to get his act together. But we need to see improvement now or he just is what he is.

Just have to surround Bowers with some help and I think it will be ok. He is a decent QB but not good enough to put a team on his back without the supporting cast.

Bowers is trash .

Wait till its cold , windy, and wet !

We need to have a dual threat QB, and bring back the NIU offensive identity ! We arent a pass first team

Miss those days.

Bowers is a quite good qb that currently isn’t getting much help with receivers getting open and a line not giving him much time. If you can’t see he presence in the pocket and passing capabilities you don’t know football. There is a reason the tight ends are being used so much

RE: Bowers
I think it's a little early for a coach or team psychoanalysis.

New head coach, new coaching staff, new more pass-oriented offense, tough road schedule, some key injuries, some key players gone from last year, etc., etc., ... add it up. Or down.

I respected Carey for winning MAC games and a few vs. P5s, but he wasn't the most likeable guy in the neighborhood. He also took his staff with him. I like Hammock's positive social attitude and loyalty, but understand he spent five years in the NFL and had to create a staff from scattered contacts. The staff also has to become a team.

R.e. Bowers ... I hope Hammock is not locked in the way Carey was with Childers. Two years ago, Bowers threw for 3,000+ yards, 18 tds and 11 ints, which tells me he threw a lot to somebody, and not always wearing the same uniform. Fancy flips are not running ability. Every good qb I have seen can also run; maybe not first, but it adds a threat that qbs in the shotgun need to have. Maybe Bowers needs a break to work that out. If Childers started the next game, or was given a half, it might bring some atittudes in for a landing, and not just Bowers. Doesn't Hammock preach that everyone has to compete for their spot? And when did the competition end for the season?

Anyway, some on the board need to take a load off, IMO. Nobody is trying to destroy Huskie football.

Bowers is running for his life on every pass play. The pass blocking is really poor. It's going to look ugly until they figure that out.

So having a positive social attitude is greater than winning football games? Give me the guy that is a jerk to the media but a winner on the field. You will be liked and respect more by the fans if you win, as opposed being the nice and friendly guy when you lose. IE Blil Belichick

Huh? Where did I say "social attitude" is more important than winning? Some posters on the board criticize Carey for his attitude, but as I said, he won MAC games and some vs P5. Some like Hammock for being more outgoing, but he had/has to deal with the additional difficulty of building a staff from scratch, and that's a critical factor in winning.

It’s not all the O-line. They’re average. The WRs are average and the QB hasn’t played in two years and is learning a new system. The QB has just over 2 seconds on average to through the ball. I’d go back and look at those “running for his life” plays and see if he was passed the two second mark. I’m guessing the WRs aren’t open and his mental clock is saying panic.

The O-line needs to improve(as do the WRs and Bowers), but he’s not getting sacked much at all and he’s not an elusive or big guy. If the o-line was truly terrible he’d be getting sacked more. Not just pressures. But it’s a unit that relies on three positions to work in cohesion. All 3 need to be better.

Compared to all of the serious mental mistakes the last 2 weeks, these aren't as bad. Plus he was hitting receivers square in the hands all day yesterday, they have to start pulling their weight.

I watched Bowers gain more time with his feet, avoiding a few sacks. Was anybody open though? Usually not. I just wish he would run occasionally when he can get a few yards rather than throw a very low percentage pass to a guy that isn't open.

One other thing - with Bowers they do get some yards and first downs typically, with fewer 3 and outs. That probably is helping the defense vs. the last couple years.

Agreed. I am actually curious if he was told not to scramble for some reason though because against Illinois State and Utah I thought he scrambled well.

He has a highlight reel of flipping into endzones. I agree he must have been instructed to stop scrambling because either he's not good at it or just gets reckless doing it.. Coaches or him must be scared of getting injured again.

If we has been instructed that way, I disagree with it. There are times he could run a few yards and then slide or run out of bounds. I doubt he's that fragile. And we do have Childers even if Bowers got hurt.

He played high school football in the sub-arctic rainforest that is Washington state.

Weather played a role in the effectiveness of the passing game but the ball was still finding its target, for the most part. Once the ball got to its target, was a different story.

Many like to speak of "QB performance" and "QB/passing numbers/stats" as one and the same, they are not. Bowers could have performed better but he did well enough had those around him pulled their weight equally.
