1-5 with 0 fbs wins. From MAC champs to 1 of the worst fbs teams in the country in 9 short months.

1-4, but who's counting? First to worst.

This was forecastable though. It was plain to see NIU had little returning talent and add onto that a depleted offensive line. This was a rebuilding year from the get-go.

Will the 5th best 2020 recruiting class in the MAC upgrade the talent level? Sounds comparable to Rod Carey’s recruiting rankings

Our average recruit ranking is higher than BG and Miami, only reason they are ranked higher than us is because they have more overall recruits. No one in the MAC is significantly out recruiting us. We are all pretty much bringing in the same rated recruits.

This is the correct way of viewing it. It is the average that is significant; the total number depends on the number of recruits.

Our average is 81.63. All the MAC teams are in the same range.

The average recruit rankings for the 2016 and 2017 classes was in the 78 range. We had eight 3* players combined in those two classes. We already have 13 three-star players in the 2020 class.

Trust me I understand that. I know it’s still very very early in his career, but if you are struggling with the coaching side, you could possibly make up for it in recruiting. Hammock was heralded as a successful recruiter. And well he’s no better than some of the better MAC programs right now. I expect that to get better with each class in the future.

This 4 game stretch has me wondering where is this program going? It’s clearly a transition rebuild year, but there’s still plenty of talent to go win a MAC championship. It’s very strange and some of the coaching decisions really doesn’t help boost your confidence that all will be just fine.

I like to compare our average rating vs the rest of the average rating in the MAC. As each year passes there are more and more “3” star kids. 247 boosts those numbers each year to keep people interested.

+1. 247's ratings have skyrocketed. # of offers is a better indicator. There are some .82+ 3 star kids who have only 1 offer. That doesn't make sense.

There might be something to be said for practicing in the elements. After the game, Ball State coach mentioned that not having an indoor facility allowed his team to "embrace" the elements from having to spend time in it.

Sometimes I get the feeling having the indoor practice facility has caused the team to play "softer" in inclement weather. Okay, so its 50 degrees and raining, sure it might be more enjoyable to practice inside, but whats the point of perfecting your playing technique in some perfect, climate-controlled environment that's not going to mimic game time conditions.

Ignoring the fumbles in the third, I keep replaying why on the kick off, in the rain, at the two yard line, near the sidelines where it either goes out of bounds and we start at the 35 or in the end zone (25)...why try to catch that?????

The more I think about it you do NOT see teams like Iowa, Ohio State, etc make those mistakes. I despise Iowa, but there those things don’t seem to happen with teams like that

This play was absolutely the turning point of the game, I could not believe what I just saw. The ref even threw a flag next to it anticipating the kickoff was going out of bounds and going to the 35. What a turn of events. That are giving up 6 first downs via penalty were the back breakers and inexcusable.

I'd have to agree, that was a huge play in the game.

I was thinking that too. I don't know how often they use the IPF but it appears it's too much.

In the post game, I hate how Ham says "we had an excellent week of practice and we will have another." How can we have and excellent week of practice and spit this out?

Strongly disagree.
Stop making excuses for thomas Hammock.

How much talent did Rod Carey have for many years?

Sutton Smith was not a top High school recruit.

Carey took mediocre talent and got steller results on the field!

64.2% wins, 5 earned post season Bowls, 4 earned trips to Detroit, 2 MACC
A winning record against B1G teams and arch nemises Toledo.

He was not a great recruiter.
Neither was he able to bring out the fan base.
Neither was he able to project a smooth persona.
Single players win games less, then penalties and turnovers lose games.

The blow out by Nebraska would have unlikely occured under careful conservative but reliable Coach Carey.
The huge penalty mistakes 110 yards against Ball State durring home coming.

Put that on Hammock's shoulders. Not on Carey.

P.S. Carey never lossed to Ball State.
