I wonder what their plan for hockey is? Maybe the NCHL adds them and Minn St Mankato?

The NCHC is the best league in college hockey. I don't think they need to add anyone right now.
I really like this addition for the Summit so much more than Augustana. UST has about 10,000 students, a solid endowment and is well-located in St. Paul. Minn.

Great add. St Thomas has the potential to blow up as a program if they ever got really good. If not, the Tommies hit the sweet spot niche - in the footprint, new market, #2 program in a decent-sized state.

Summit League has confirmed this news in a press release. League vote was unanimous by the Summit Presidents.
I really like this move, and I hope the NCAA approves it. The Tommies have the size, resources, location, sports tradition and academic profile to be a very effective addition to the Summit League.

It'll be interesting to see. I guess the NCAA could approve the waiver given they were kicked out of their conference if memory serves me right- but still keep the top on the toothpaste and not have a flood of d3 to d1 moveups.

UST to Summit
This is a good move in many ways.
-UST has a profile more similar to Creighton than St. Marys in Winona MN. UST outgrew the MIAC.
-UST will become just the 2nd Minnesota school at the division 1 level. Many Minnesota athletes populating the D1 programs of the surrounding states might like staying closer to home.
-The Northern Sun Conference (D2) didn't want to be a half-way house for UST for a few years.
-I also think Denver is a winner in this. The Summit adds a high quality private to the roster. That might make Denver feel better about the neighborhood.
(Now if the Summit could only get Drake.... nah, ain't gonna happen.)

I wonder if the "WCHA 7" got wind of this before issuing their letter that they were going to form a new hockey conference?
UST fits their footprint perfectly: "The Great Lakes Hockey Conference"

Geographically speaking they’d make a nice 8th school for that league.

I wonder what their football plans are Pioneer or will we see the Summit try to take over management of the MVFC?

In the Tarleton State thread, I have them listed that said they want D1. Rowan is the other team that said they are looking to go D1.

RE: MPLS Star-Tribune: Univ of St. Thomas Invited to Summit League pending NCAA waiver
Just found a topic from 2016 where DavidSt predicts St Thomas would go to the Pioneer League despite no precedence of the D3 waiver ever being granted. This is next level stuff.
(12-13-2016 03:41 PM)DavidSt Wrote: St. Thomas could play in the Pioneer League first. That is until they could build up for more cash for scholarships for football.
St. Thomas, Minnesota
Butler, Indiana
Dayton, Ohio
Valparaiso, Indiana
Drake, Iowa
If Evansville could restart football, they could be in there as well.
Pioneer League Football do need to get more football and break into regions like Pioneer League Football Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, North Central, South Central and West Coast.

I think the Pioneer makes sense at first. If some big $ donors are willing to pony up, they could consider a scholarship league later. For example, Mercer started in the Pioneer and then moved to the SoCon.
UST will face financial challenges moving to D1: scholarships to athletes, increased coaching salaries, facility improvements. They currently have 22 sports. Will they keep all of them? (*note: UST has baseball and soccer, which the Summit League desperately needs with loss of PFW.)
UST will be able to do what must be done. But if they keep football non-scholly for a few years of transition, that will make things easier.

He's on a hot streak. It was Tarleton moving up last week.
