I suspect none of those could garner enough votes among the membership.

I agree, which is why I'd probably just stand pat as long as they can get the CCG approved.

The phone is ringing off the hook? Do you have a source or inside information on this? Commissioner Aresco has said publicly that some schools have reached out about their interest to join the league but so far no one has moved the needle. He has also said that there is no rush to add someone at this point so I don't see it happening as fast as you seem to indicate.

If you look at it logically, there are at least 25 schools than likely have reached out to express interest in some way--my sense is probably more. Most any Sunbelt or CUSA school would jump at the chance. Thats 24 schools right there. We know from the press that JMU expressed interest. Liberty, UMass, and NM St almost certainly contacted the league. Thats 29. Its not unthinkable that the some (or all) of the front range MW schools might be sick of Boise's special deal and like the idea of going from 1 million a year to 7 million a year in payout. Its also possible a few MAC schools might have been interested as well---I could definitely see Toledo or Buffalo being interested. So, yeah---I suspect somewhere around 30-35 schools probably have made contact with the AAC.

No one knows for sure how many called but I don't doubt some of those you mention have made contact. That said, most had to know that it was a cursory call only. Not to split hairs but the OP stated the Commissioner's Office phone was "ringing off the hook" in the context of adding a 12th member was imminent. I don't believe that's the case.

If Rice would make a commitment to spending and competing in the ways Tulane and SMU have they probably would make a ton of sense. I question if they ever will though.

Ok, but does jedclampett have inside information the AAC is expanding? Is he an industry insider? This could send shockwaves through 25 conferences.

What’s funny is y’all act like the MAC or CUSA is better than the Sun Belt. Smh, it’s been a few years, but the SBC has surpassed both leagues.

When I first read this thread the JRsec proposed prank a few months ago came to mind.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if "the AAC office has been literally deluged with notifications of interest from universities wishing to join the AAC."

The list of universities that have expressed some sort of interest, whether by email message, phone call, letter, Snapchat, or via a friend of a friend, could easily be at least 30 schools long.

If all-sports, I believe their historically bad basketball program will see a much needed injection of resources and prestige from the AAC and show improvement. If not, I’m sure they would willingly move to the A-Sun or Big South, which would allow us to add VCU for Olympic sports. Either outcome works for me.
App doesn't have a "historically bad" program. Just a super bad one the last three coaching hires made by the same arrogant AD that is no longer here.

App State FB to the AAC isn't going to happen anyway, imo. Though a yearly game with ECU would be nice, at least there's 4 games scheduled in the future with them.

2 NCAA tourney trips says you've been historically bad. A couple of 20 win seasons and SOCON Regular Season Divisional titles don't go too far really.

Why would Buffalo be a more desirable market than Atlanta, Charlotte, or San Antonio?

The Buffalo and Rochester media markets are both on the smaller side, but sports play well in those markets and there isn’t as much competition for attention. There are the pro teams and there’s Syracuse, but there’s room for more. UB is a large school and has a lot of alums in the NYC area and around the country. It was held back from Division I by the SUNY system, but it has the potential to become something of the flagship school for New York State. UB would definitely need to increase their athletic spend, but as it stands, they’re actually relatively successful at both football and men’s basketball. I don’t know that The American expands, but I would keep Buffalo on any short list.

The service academies, BYU, and Boise St all add a lot of name recognition and having those mountain time zone schools will allow the AAC to play in the late night a lot.

That line up pretty much gives the AAC a stranglehold on the G5 slot as I am doubtful that even an undefeated G4 would be able to unseat a 1 loss AAC champ.

You want to be a power conference and yet you want to add Colorado State!! CSU would be a good UConn type school for football . Check things before posting.

They are a filler school to make AFA feel better by having a travel partner and to help bridge BYU and Boise St to the rest of the league.

If the AAC doesn't get the waiver, things will change in a hurry.

If that is the case maybe UConn FB will be asked to stay. 04-jawdrop 03-nutkick 03-cloud9 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-pissed 03-puke 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-ban 04-cheers

Well, I think 30-35 inquiries probably does constitute "ringing off the hook" when it comes to conference realignment. Thats over 25% of all FBS schools. That said, none of those players really moved the needle back when the UConn news was first breaking---and I doubt they look any more appealing now. So, like you, I too am extremely skeptical that anything is currently brewing or imminent.

RE: Active discussions regarding expansion of the American Athletic Conference (AAC)
I am not sure any schools from the Rockies to the Pacific coast wants to join. Lets look at the candidates from the G5 to FCS that are good on the field, hoops and baseball.

UAB
Troy
Jacksonville State
Those 3 Alabama schools are good at either football and basketball or both.
Arkansas State
UCA
Both schools have the football.
UConn.
They just left. Women's hoops would be missed.
Delaware is a R1 research school, but football been hit and missed lately. They did had one football player that could have sold his likeness. Joe Flocco
North Florida
FGCU
Florida A&M
Baseball and football are the ticket for these 3 schools.
Georgia Southern
Mercer
Kennesaw State
All have been good in the money sports.
Northern Iowa
Illinois State
Loyola Chicago
Northern Illinois
Indiana State
Butler
Bellarmine
Western Kentucky
La. Tech
Southern
Maine
Towson
UMass.
Holy Cross
Saint Thomas if they get a waiver to join D1.
Southern Miss.
Missouri State
SE Missouri State
Saint Louis
Montana
Montana State
NC A&T
App State
Charlotte
North Dakota State
Buffalo
Stony Brook
Fordham
Monmouth
Dayton
Toledo
Xavier
URI
Coastal Carolina baseball
South Dakota State
Chattanooga
Belmont
Mid. Tenn. State
UTSA
Lamar
Vermont
ODU
James Madison
Georgetown
Villanova
Milwaukee
Marshall

There are some stronger D2 basketball schools like Southern Indiana, Lincoln Memorial and the likes.

Not happening. However, Rice and Buffalo to the AAC would mean that all AAU FBS schools would be members of the P5 + AAC.

I do not believe the MWC leads are dead until info about a competitive TV deal comes to light. The fact that we haven't heard much tells me something. The AAC couldn't freaking wait to release their deal...
