If I was Rutgers, I’d use that Big Ten money once they get their full share in building a strong men’s basketball program.

This is a good strategy.

For the football part, I would focus on building a program that can compete with Maryland, Indiana and the upcoming cross-division opponents Purdue, Illinois, and Minnesota and common OOC opponents Temple, Syracuse, and Boston College. Schedule another series with Umass...and may be UConn and Liberty. Focus on the players and schemes that will beat those opponents and don't worry about the big four and other tough cross-over opponents.

Run a clock-eating ball control offense against the elite B1G teams to limit the number of plays run and turnovers and to hopefully limit injuries and embarrassing scores. A 27-0 loss to Michigan looks a better than 52-0. As the program improves, you start to see scores like 24-9. A loss is still a loss, but stay the course.

Make the goal to consistently get to bowl games and build from there.

They have to find a way to become a consistent 6-6 or 7-5 program. Not the best scenario but it’s better than going 2-10 most years. Even if they go 3-6 or 4-5 in Big Ten play, they can still win their three OOC games if they schedule smart and become bowl eligible.

Sounds like wishful thinking. Miss State is a better job, no reason for a head coach to leave there for Rutgers unless he's about to be canned.

Might not be so farfetched. He's a Northeast guy that had a great run at Fordham right nearby Rutgers as both player and coach, and then assistant at Penn State, and before that assistant at UConn. He might like the opportunity to get back nearby NYC and the idea of turning around Rutgers into a contender which would give him legend status in these parts like Schiano has.

Aside from Bill Snyder and Mike Riley, who else has returned to a school with successful results? I'm having a hard time coming up with anyone who's returned, not a very common occurrence though it'd make sense with RU.

While we're on this topic btw, who else is on the hot seat? Though Chip Kelly was all the rage of this forum before the Wazzu win, there are probably a good chunk of well-known and obscure coaches feeling the heat right now. A quick scan of the standings shows a few coaches with not much success in year three or beyond: Lovie Smith (Illinois), Tom Allen (IU), Tony Sanchez (UNLV), and Mike Neu (Ball State) along with others like Mike Bobo (Colorado State) who seem to do well from the prior coach's recruits but fell off a cliff after they left.

probably never, but this is also the first time that Rutgers actually is willing to spend money to compete on a serious level.

VT's AD should be fired for agreeing to that buyout.

I don't disagree, but at the time of Fuente's extension he was considered a target by blue blood P5 programs.

Looks like VT is stuck with Fuente for the foreseeable future based on his very favorable buyout terms. The VT AD is the same AD that hired Tommy Tuberville when he was at Cincinnati. Not good.

Quote:If Fuente is fired before his contract expires on Dec. 15, 2024, he is owed a buyout, which doesn't fall under seven figures until 2022:

After the 2018 season: $15 million
2019: $15 million
2020: $12.5 million
2021: $10 million
2022: $7.5 million
2023: $5 million
2024: $2 million

Ouch!

Take Fuente off the hot seat list. He's a hero again.

But, they aren’t that serious. And no major program coach should take them seriously. A “serious” Rutgers program must chase Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State because they see them on a yearly basis. That’s spending a mint on staffing, recruitment, facilities, etc.; Rutgers does not have this money.

If they were on the other side of the conference, a bit of a different story. But where they are now, and probably will be as the conference’s eastern-most member, their benchmarking will ALWAYS be on those other schools, and not the Purdue’s, Illinois’, or Minnesota’s of the conference. Nobody is going to stick around that long for that. And if they did, and were halfway decent as a coach, they’d take Rutgers to the cleaners to keep them there, like every year. Where is Rutgers getting that money?

The B-10 needs to go back to an eight game conference schedule to give schools like Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois, and Indiana a chance of at least a 6 & 6 season to become bowl eligible with more OOC wins. They can schedule more lower ranked P5 / G5 / FCS teams to look better and help the conference meet its bowl requirements at year end with an 8 game conference schedule. Beating up on these teams for an extra P5 conference victory year after year does not help the B-10's image especially when the B-10 top teams could be scheduling more top P5 competition for potential victories for the CFP board and standings at year end. Maybe the B-10 brass is just afraid of stronger OOC scheduling for the conference alpha dogs to keep them in the CFP conversation during the regular season to try and fill their stadiums year after year, and hope to slip one of those alpha dogs in to the playoffs with an undefeated season. 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 04-cheers

If Rutgers can increase the pay to $2.5 or higher, especially with their B1G payouts, I'm guessing they could pry Clawson away from Wake.

I would think if I were Clawson I'd be looking for something a bit more promising than Rutgers.

I think Rutgers may be forced to hire either a young guy or a bounceback guy like Golden(or Schiano).

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^. Clawson would be wise to stay put until something better comes along. Schiano would likely get Rutgers back into the S. Florida recruiting pool to try and rebuild like he did the first time. Don't really know if Golden is interested. 04-cheers

Absolutely. Virginia Tech might open up for Clawson, just as one example. For that matter, it's easier to win at Wake Forest than at Rutgers.

Fuente has a $15 million buyout, so that's hard to envision.

May have put an ice cube under his a$$ to cool down the hot seat yesterday with that victory over Miami. Almost blew it and that would have turned up the heat by blowing that lead. A bowl at season end and the $15 million buy out gets him another year. Needs time to rebuild. 07-coffee3

PJ Fleck gets a seven-year extension through 2026, bumps up his buyout to ten million dollars if he leaves after this season. Doesn't mean he'll stay in Minneapolis for sure, but with that and an assistant's raise of a million it takes the probability down a little.

Clawson isn't going to leave for Rutgers. Get real, he may take a job somewhere else, but Rutgers? 01-wingedeagle

This could be a chance of a 1 & 1 for USF.

Plus a little extra fire for this weekend’s game, which I already had them winning.

Rutgers officials met with Greg Schiano for several hours yesterday, but he has a list of significant conditions that Rutgers may or may not be interested in meeting.

Quote:The sources told ESPN that a deal is far from being done, however, because Schiano is requesting a new indoor facility, upgrades for other facilities and a dramatic increase in assistant coaches' salaries.

Can't blame him. The stakes at winning are higher this time.
