#2 Alabama, #4 Michigan, #5 Oklahoma, #6 Penn State (eventual champion), #7 Auburn, #8 Washington, #10 Texas AM, #11 Iowa, #12 LSU, and #16 Clemson. The only teams that were in that week's top 10 that are not ranked right now were #3 Nebraska and #9 Arizona State. The more things change ....

2) Ronald Reagan was President, and would be for another 2 1/2 years. The USSR still existed and nobody had any inkling it would ever not exist.

3) I was 22, a senior at USF. USF wouldn't have a football team for 11 more years, so my dorm hall was filled with Miami, Florida, and FSU banners.

4) The #1 movie was "Crocodlle Dundee", the #1 album was "Fore" by Huey Lewis and the News, and the #1 song was "When I Think of You" by Janet Jackson.

5) October 21st, 1986 was 12,032 days ago, or 1.039 Billion seconds ago.
That's crazy!

Congratulations, SMU and welcome back to the top 25.

Congratulations, SMU and welcome back to the top 25.

BTW, your Buckeyes had a bumpy ride in the polls that year. Ohio State was pre-season #9, but dropped a spot to #10 on losing their first game. When they lost game #2 to fall to 0-2, they fell out of the top 20 entirely. Those first two losses were against #5 Alabama and #17 Washington.

Ohio State was then unranked for the next 6 weeks, which included the last week SMU was ranked. The week SMU dropped out of the poll, October 28, Ohio State re-entered it at #17, after having won six straight games to go to 6-2. Ohio State then jumped to #11 the next week, #9 the week after, and #7 the week after that. They went in to the game vs #6 Michigan, quarterbacked by Jim Harbaugh, on a 9-game winning streak, but upon losing**, fell back to #11. After they beat SWC champ #8 Texas AM in the Cotton Bowl, the Bucks finished #7 in the final AP poll.

** I remember watching that Michigan @ Ohio State game. It was a classic, with the Big 10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line. Michigan won 26-24 when the OS kicker missed a 45 yard FG with seconds remaining. Michigan would lose to Arizona State in the Rose Bowl. Arizona State was coached by John Cooper, and thanks largely to that win, he would get the Ohio State job in 1988, whereupon in his 13 seasons in Columbus, he would also win one Rose Bowl - in 1996, over Arizona State! He would also only beat Michigan twice during those 13 seasons as well.

That was also the year Jim Harbaugh guaranteed a victory, and delivered.

I'd be quiet if I were you. Even depleted on D we'd have a good chance against Satan's Own this year.

RE: Alabama #1, SMU ranked for first time since Death Penalty
It doesn't matter who #1 is halfway through the season...especially when that ranking comes from an outlet that doesn't pick the CFP participants. The Committee will produce their own rankings and they haven't compiled one yet. The AP ranking literally doesn't matter.

Feel free to argue away, but here is how things will play out...

There are a handful of teams that will be in the playoff if they win out...Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. Obviously, not all of these can win out, but you get the point.

SOS is variable so it can't be accurately calculated until the end of the season. With that said, Alabama and Clemson have at least 2 common opponents this year...Texas A&M and South Carolina. Neither of those teams have looked particularly good, but committee members will consider the performance against both teams when they offer up their final rankings.

There might be a 3rd common opponent if Duke wins their division. There's a lot of football to play, but an argument could be made that Duke is the 2nd best team in the ACC. A steep drop off from #1 certainly, but at this point the only other reasonable contender for that #2 slot is Virginia. UVA struggled against Old Dominion and competed well with Notre Dame so who knows what they really are. You could make an argument for Wake Forest at this point as well, but they're in the same division with Clemson so that would be a moot point.

It is some advantage to be in Atlanta over Phoenix, but consider the possibility that neither Alabama nor Clemson will be in the top 2. It all depends on the rest of the games and how this plays out. Even if Clemson goes undefeated, they might not be #1 because their conference is weak. There are others that could knock them off the perch for the top spot going into the CFP.

I think if Alabama wins out- it'd be close to impossible for them not to be in the top 2.. LSU, Auburn, and likely Georgia. Clemson I don't think you can say the same because they would not be ahead of an undefeated Ohio St/Wisconsin, or Oklahoma team.

I would agree although it's possible for Alabama to lose a game and still be in the CFP. Depends on who they lose to and how the SEC title race plays out, but it's a legitimate possibility.

I just point those out because they have the cache. Their programs are consistently strong and their conference membership either helps or doesn't detract.

Looking at the rankings, I guess throw Penn State in there...didn't realize they were still undefeated. I'm tempted to say Wisconsin, but they didn't play a P5 out of conference and their division doesn't do them any favors.

There can't be more than 4 major conference unbeatens with the Pac 12 teams all having a loss. So Baylor or Minnesota are in if they win out.

Wow, didn't realize the list was so small of undefeated teams who can still make the playoffs.

If there's an SEC in 2019 like the Big 12 South had in 2008- they can still finish the regular season with 4 11-1 teams going into the SEC CCG- all bets are off. Lets say that happens- and Auburn is the West champion. LSU is 11-1 and beat Auburn. LSU could EASILY get in over Baylor or Minnesota.

Wisconsin, Baylor and Penn State are in if they are undefeated.

Wake Forest and Boise State are very much in the conversation too.

Florida obviously is, but they are way overrated at this point.

Having 4 schools from that one conference and overlooking everybody else is the norm that's getting old.

Message board talk, at the end of the day what you and I say doesn't really matter.
