I have to agree with a lot of what NILAW says...PJ took over a worse program but went 1-11 his first year at WMU. Can we be disappointed so far with certain things-absolutely but let’s wait awhile (2-3) years and give Coach H some time to put his stamp on the program. Just my opinion to date.

How many yards did we give up on sacks today? like 75?
Just a horrible take. Huskies will be fine and are going to rake over the MAC. Would have loved to see at least one P5 victory in OCC, but newness in coaching and injuries have held us back.

It may not be an awful take. Id say right now NIU is flirting with bottom 15 to 20 status. A loss to Ball State at home and NIU is in the bottom 10 discussion.

At this point Toledo and WMU are better than us. So we are looking at 2 more losses. EMU is probably a tossup. So we very well may only win 5-6 games. I'd be surprised if we go 6-2 or better in the MAC.

But before the season began I expected us to go 1-3 in nonconference anyway. @Utah, @Nebraska, and @Vandy is just brutal and a ton of traveling in 3 weeks.

They had 2 weeks to prepare for Vanderbilt, but were unfortunately banged up from the previous 2 games.

Too many injuries on defense for sure. I thought they did a good job only holding Vandy to 10 points for the last 3 quarters. We only have 4 more home games and going 6-2 or better in MAC play would surprise me. This team doesn't seem very tough on the road and is getting smacked around.

Perhaps a horrible take, but realistic. Long term I think Coach Hammock is good for the program, but this is a rebuilding year.

I expected better out of the offense with Bowers in there, but some of his decision making has been suspect. He as an arm, for sure, but NIU has long relied on dual threat QB's, which Bowers isn't.

Maybe I'm being a bit pessimisitc, as NIU did play pretty well the second half. Harbison was chewing up, and was Nettles.

The broken play was the backbreaker. Had Bowers just fallen on the ball, we still were driving, but I guess we'll never know.

We'll lose to Toledo and WMU, and probably EMU also. If we can eke out another 5 wins at least we'll make a bowl, for what that's worth.

I don't see us in contention for the West.

I don’t expect them to compete in the MAC championship this year. Too many injuries with zero depth to replace them. No pass rush, so teams like Toledo will torch NIU.

I take it that you haven't seen Toledo play this year. They're just as unimpressive so far. Their QB doesn't look the same after an early injury, my guess is that he isn't 100% and it says something about what the coach thinks about the quality of depth at the position that he keeps getting trotted out there.

NIU, EMU, and Toledo will have a good battle for the top of the West.

Toledo beat BYU and Colorado State, and kept it close vs. Kentucky. Their QB play is not as great as in years past, but NIU’s defense is thin at LB with zero pass rush. Not a good recipe for success. I’m hoping Bowers and the offense comes alive and competes. This year reminds me of a slightly better version of the 2016 team. I’m guessing 6 wins.
0 pass rush. Incorrect.

Heflin was busting thru the line to disrupt plays.

Sutton spoiled us.

Yep.

Ask EMU how much they miss Crosby.

It'll take time to adjust to not having Sutton, plus a new defensive scheme.

Although, it would be nice if the rest of the DLine would start registering some sacks.

Too bad Sutton didn’t stay another year.

RE: ***O F F I C I A L*** VANDERBILT WEEK & GAME THREAD (9/28)
I was at the game, and one thing that I think may have been a factor on the fumble by Bowers in the 4th quarter. The band was basically playing up until the point he fumbled the snap. I said it immediately when it happened. It is possible this caused miscommunication. I paid close attention after that, and the band quit playing much earlier. I am not sure if you can hear it on the broadcast; but does anybody have it recorded that can go back and listen to that play? I did some research and here is what it says.

Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise that prohibits a
team from hearing its signals (NCAA Rule 1-1-6 and UIL Rule 9-2-1-b-5).

There is a down-cycle in RB/WR talent right now compared to last 10 years. Hard to win without top skill players.

Give Tucker some credit. He's reliable and he makes the clutch catches. That hit he took and still held onto the ball? Tough kid.

Had a couple of tough catches in the 2nd half of the Nebraska disaster too.

I'd like to see a starting three of Ritchie, Tears, and Tucker with a sprinkle of Robinson throughout and specifically in Red Zone situations to complement (not take the place of) Brinkman, Crawford, and the TEs.

The Michael Love experiment needs to end. Let that young guy redshirt. He's not ready.

Is Payne healthy?

Agree on Love. Perfect type of player to give a shot to and see how he did, but is still too raw. Use the redshirt now. Will help with depth down the road

Saw someone with an NIU license plate on 65 circa 730 driving home. Had to be someone from here!

This fan base travels well. Probably 4k Huskies in Nashville.

We just played at utah and Nebraska and you're trying to tell me that a 35 member vandy band overcame Bowers?

The PA system was also playing music when we snapped more than once, but agreed, there's no way that was more distracting than Utah or Nebraska.

Speaking of the PA, that was probably the most annoying stadium announcer I've ever heard.

Watched game on tv. I would think it would be bigger distraction wondering where all the bigshot SEC fans were. But it's Nashville, so maybe twanging their banjos.
