Good luck finding elbow room at the table between Publix, Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, Ingles, Aldi, Lidl, Food Lion, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Trader Joe's, Bi-Lo (SE Grocers) ... probably out of business soon, Harris Teeter, Sav-a-Lot, Piggly Wiggly, and probably at least another 2-4 more.

Acme tried to bring Jersey down here in groceries and threw in the towel over a decade ago. Had they brought WaWa instead maybe we could have worked something out.

Wegmans targets relocated northerners and professional middle/upper income families

Wegmans is wiping the floor with those places in Virginia right now. They have like 5 more new stores in the works over the next couple years too.

North or South of Richmond and I-64? It makes a *BIG* difference. Around here Publix crushes that market. Their deli and bakery have cult followings. Other chains avoid their immediate vicinity with the exception of Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets ... which seem to *want* to move in next to them.

Most of them are north of Richmond. They just built a huge store in Virginia Beach that is booming though. All I know about Publix is their hoagies are pretty great and they are spoken of very highly by folks who have regular access to one. I'm just telling you that Wegmans puts most grocery stores to shame and its not just about the fresh food options (which are pretty great), it's the service. They treat their employees amazing compared to the competition and it shows when you shop there.

North of Richmond might as well be home turf. Not sure about employees at Publix but they do have a higher level of service for sure. That's a mixed bag though IMO. I'd prefer a self checkout at Publix ... there is none. I also find it awkward to be asked if I need them to take the bags to my car for me. If I came in with a walker I'd get it. But they ask that to everybody. I dunno, it just seems awkward and empowering the lazy and hoping for a tip.

Wegmans also has a cult like following in NY. There are a lot of New Yorkers in the Carolinas. Wegmans will do just fine there.

Since someone mentioned Publix, Publix is actually coming around. most of their stores are kind of regular. But when Im in Florida, I shop at a Publix right on Tamiami Trail (rt-41) Its right near the road to Siesta Key. That store is amazing. You come in upstairs and you have to take the escalators. Next to the escalators that have an escalator for your shopping carts. Thats something I havent seen in any Wegmans. But that Publix amenities compares to Wegmans, just not as large.

Harris Teeter was sold to Kroger a few years ago. It was such a strong brand name, Kroger decided to keep the name instead of re-branding the stores.

Wegmans will have to build a distribution center between Charlotte & Atlanta if they want move further south. They may find the Charlotte market in particular to be a tough challenge with 2 strong brands like HT & Publix sucking up almost every desirable location even if they have no plans to open a store for awhile. HT has also started opening 80,000 plus sq ft stores with gas stations, full service bars etc.

Wegmans will probably do fine. I'm not sure about Publix though. The one I went to here had horrible service, terrible produce and meat selection. Regular 80/20 was $6.99/lb. At least twice the going rate. The bakery was ok but nothing I would drive by Harris Teeter for.

I managed a project for an advertising agency in NYC. They were surprised at the differences in grocery stores in the NE vs SE. In particular he noted the size of the grocery carts. They are much larger in the NE. People in the NE shop less frequently but buy more goods. In the SE they shop more frequently but buy fewer goods. In the SE there is little risk of being snowed in so we don't keep heavily stocked larders. We just go to the grocery store more often. It's also part of the reason you see news stories about grocery stores running out of staples when bad weather does hit.

I'll just stick to Food Lion and Carlie C's IGA. All these stores you guys are talking about are very expensive.

The reports are that people started lining up the night before Wegmans opened on Sunday in Cary. By the time they opened the doors, there were a couple of thousand people lined up outside the building. Reportedly, things got more normal today.
