They played Auburn respectable on the road in a losing effort 24-6. A lot of football to be played and Tulane has a brutal schedule remaining but definitely a program on the up and up [until Fritz leaves].

Louisiana has a strong high school football base as well as intense regional pride. That leads me to believe his recruiting this year will not be an aberration as well...Tulane was a juggernaut in the past, they could get back to a diet coke version of that program.

Agree. Not saying this is an apple-to-an-apple comparison by any means but Tulane can be similar to Cincinnati from the perspective of recruiting from its football crazy location in a large urban/metro area in relation to the state flagship program. Of course, having a head coach with some sustained success, building excitement and updated facilities is part of it too.

I did not realize or remember Fritz had great success at Georgia Southern prior to coming to Tulane:

2014-2015
17-7 [14-2]

That's another good barometer of where he can take a program...

Fritz has won wherever he's coached. He was at Sam Houston State before Georgia Southern and went 40-15, won the Southland 2/4 years and went to the FCS NCG twice (lost both times).

He's 60 years old. Not sure why he didn't elevate sooner.

Holgs ceiling is 7-9 wins a year. I still remember the 2011 season in the Big East were he fortuitously took WVU to the BCS Bowl. WVU finished 5-2 in the Big East, but was a Zach Collaros broken ankle away from finishing 3rd. They pulled wins against USF and Pitt out of their rears too (classic meltdowns by those two teams), could have easily been 2-5.

I remember that game. Last time UC and WVU played IIRC. Even with Collaros breaking his ankle we still only lost on a blocked kick at the end of the game.

Well, at least he's toned down his electrified comb-over doo.

Even if we did not beat WVU, if ZC was uninjured we would not have lost to Rutgers the following week. We would have won the conference outright in 2011 and gone to our 3rd BCS bowl in 4 years.

Hopefully his age will lead to him staying at Tulane for the relatively long term. Stability at a school like that is huge, and a reasonably strong Tulane is great for the AAC.

Overpay for a coach on the way down, it is very Tubervillian.

Yeah, funny enough I think of West Virginia and Texas Tech as twin universities as institutions and fanbases. (other than basketball, where WVU has a much better program)

Not so sure WVU is currently the better hoops program. TTU came damn close to winning the title last year. EE last two years.

Anywho, I totally disagree with the thought that CDH is a Tubbs level higher. What he's dealing with in Houston isn't really all that difference than CLF was dealing with year 1 here.

Houston is essentially going through a rebuild. They'll never say as much, buuuut that's what it is. As noted, they had an elite talent on D last year and they were still horrible. So, that'll take time. On offense he has a good QB, but he looks either ill fitted, or not comfortable with that style of play. Ppl who expected an instant home run are ones who are off.

We're looking at a 2/3 year project.

I have said it elsewhere... I think Holgs is more comparable to Dave Wannstedt than Tommy Tuberville.

Thoughts on UCF's loss to Pitt.
A lot of talent, with a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot.
When it counted, Pitt punched them in the mouth.

When UCF kicked that last field goal, I was thinking that they should have gone for it. Even if that failed, Pitt would have been backed up deep.

Edit - Meant to post this in the week 4 thread.

I posted this in the other thread, but you were right and not just because they would be backed up. Pitt would have played for the tie at that point even if UCF didn't get it. You really lower the odds of losing in regulation if you are up 3 instead of up 6. This stuff has been tracked and your odds of winning the game actually go down up 4, 5 or 6 late from what they are when you're up 3.

Posted the same thing on the main board. Football coaches are really bad with with time and score. UCF scores a TD the game is over, gets a first down game is over, gets stopped then Pitt plays for the tie with poor field
position. All those options are so much better than going up six.

One of these days someone is going understand game management and just run circles around those other coaches who fail to understand how to manage a football game.

I think we saw the limitations of an elite offense when helmed by an inexperienced frosh QB. That kid is gonna be good. Likely, really good. However yesterday, on the road, in a semi hostile environment (cuz that crowd wasn't impressive) he wasn't quite ready.

UCF wins that game with Milton.

Lucky for us the UCF game is at nippert. Not by any means a sure win for us, buuuut I do feel a bit better about our chances

back to Tulane - Houston

I only saw pieces of the game, but it looked like the Tulane OL was winning the majority of their battles. So is the Tulane OL better than we might have suspected? ... or is the Huston DL worse? ... Or is it some combination?

Houston's defense is atrocious...so, whatever way that answers your question I guess 03-lmfao
