Miami's offense in the first quarter was more imaginative that mostly anything UC has shown so far - especially their running game.

UC needs to get their act together on the offensive line and try some different things with the running backs. At least 80% (I'm probably exaggerating this) of the running plays appear to be right up the middle and the defense is just waiting for it.

Miami's RB's seemed to be able to run to the outside and were quick. Warren is a beast but he is not real speedy and probably not suited to outside running plays.

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread - it would be nice if UC/Ridder could learn how to execute options plays. Ridder could be very dangerous when running the option.

It's early but after watching the game and looking at the remaining schedule it's going to be a tough season unless UC can fix some things on offense and defense. The AAC looks pretty tough with the exception of UConn and ECU.

I don't know how often they are actually running it, but often times I think Ridder doesn't make the right read on what appears to be a zone read. He gives it to Warren when the end is crashing inside and the outside is open if he keeps it. The one time I remember him making the right read was the 4th down conversion against OSU.

He has extreme difficulty reading the back-side end in the backfield mesh on zone/read calls. One of my biggest gripes with him...luckily we've got a QB coming in who can do incredibly well at the same.

IMHO a section of our playbook had to be thrown out of the window after McClelland went down with the ACL injury the week of the UCLA game. Yes they could run some of those plays with Montgomery and maybe Doaks (who is down), but my guess is they are not yet comfortable running some of that stuff with RM yet. RM has looked impressive thus far in limited touches I must say.

I have a read a lot of comments on social media in the past couple of weeks about the play calling and what I must say is that folks need to understand this staff is not going to suddenly run BK's playbook from 2009 or go Air Raid all of a sudden. This staff's philosophy is more Jim Tressel-like (particularly later JT years) than Urban Meyer. They want to wear defenses down so that come late in the 3rd quarter and into the 4th quarter they can impose their will on you by moving the line of scrimmage. This is why you always see Mike Warren starting out kind of slow but getting better as the game goes along. He is the perfect back for this type of offense.

Different sport but I had a college head baseball coach (at UC no less) tell me you can find under recruited gems who can produce at a high level all over the place but you have to understand that you’ll need to game-plan around the holes in their game that everyone else who looked at them and passed saw too. Ridder can be impressive but I think the playbook is shortened up considerably to hide the holes in his strike zone.

That seems like the life of G5 coaches. The hope is by year 3 or 4 the areas that the player was deficient in have "clicked." Thats where you separate the NFL/Great college talent from guys like Hayden Moore.

That is no shot at Moore, and I know he was often in a difficult situation, but Moore always seemed like he had the Talent to be an excellent QB, but the game never slowed down or "clicked."

He was throwing to the greatest wideout talent ever amassed at UC. Covered by a pitiful Memphis “secondary”

Prater or Bryant?

Wish you could get out video and diagram this for us with the real play.

Probably because it sells tickets--and it's what fans want to hear.

What's your definition of a dynamic offense? Does it require playing 5 wide receivers running vertical routes? Hell, Tommy Tuberville had this type of offense, especially from 2013-2015 and frankly I did not enjoy our offense that much (our great receivers Tubs inherited aside). Games were too long because we were throwing the ball 50-60 times a game resulting in a lot of clock stoppage.

Playing devil's advocate, I find Mike Warren running for a school record 19 TDs and 1,300+ yards to be pretty dynamic. I found Charles McClelland last year to be damn dynamic. I loved the fact we have 3 TEs that can take the ball to the house (Deguara, Whyle, Taylor) along with two more traditional blocking TEs. I do agree we need to up the talent at WR.

They've actually run a couple pass plays this year that they used last year with CM using Warren, and he's had nice gains. I'd be real surprised if you do not see them trying to hit Warren more out of the backfield. He's looked good catching the ball this year. He's very effective when you can get him the ball at full stride.

This offense is is way more Don Tredwell and Mark Dantonio than it is Jeff Quinn and Brian Kelly. It’s the sensible shoes and reliable sedan offense.

For good or bad this is starting to feel like Dantonio v2.0.

Hayden Moore's QB power rushes behind a pulling guard during the Military Bowl was vintage Craig Krenzel/Ohio State 2002. Mike Warren is basically a smaller version of Maurice Clarett.

Tressel-ball evolved during his tenure at Ohio State. It did become more dynamic under Troy Smith and then Terrelle Pryor and I think that is what the staff is aiming for.

They're hitting quite a few more pass plays of 20yds or more than Dantonio ever did. It's there if Ridder adapts to making the reads. Let's face it, he just played last year, and now they've given him more rope and responsibility in the offense. It's a learning process. My guess is they simplify things a little for him over this layoff week heading into the Marshall game and give him less responsibility for making calls. You can't completely pull that as he'll never learn it, but my guess is he's struggling with that and it's why he's tentative out there. It's a learning process. Qb is the most difficult position out there.

You must first master the craft of power football and controlling the game then you start to get more imaginative on O. IMO, from what I’ve seen from the great coaches.

With that said, I’d like to see us open up the playbook a bit more. I don’t think the coaches have full trust in the O.
