WAC Volleyball 2019
I know that we do not really post about Volleyball, but my family and I drove to Auburn this weekend to watch NMSU in a Volleyball tournament. Yesterday they swept matches vs Butler 3-0 and Auburn 3-0! Today they play Tennessee St. Fun team to watch. They have a 6'5'' Middle Hitter who is really good.

Three matches, all 3-0. Pretty good start.

Tennessee State was a pretty good team. They beat Auburn in 5 sets the morning before. Lots of fun!

GCU sweeps their opening weekend tournament. Beat UNM, Rutgers, and UNC. Feels a lot better than most considering how bad this team has been the past few years.

Good start to the season. Since becoming D1, volleyball has been GCU's worst sport in terms of winning percentage. They have yet to have a winning conference season and only once have had a winning record. Perhaps the tide is shifting. If so, I might actually go watch a match or two this season.
Win/Loss Record for GCU Volleyball
11-17 (4-12 conf.) in 2018
8-18 (3-11 conf.) in 2017
6-21 (1-13 conf.) in 2016
7-21 (3-11 conf.) in 2015
21-11 (6-8 conf.) in 2014
12-19 (4-12 conf.) in 2013

UTRGV 3, Maryland 2.

Maryland is receiving votes (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball...ca-coaches) but probably not after this.

GCU now 4-1 on the season. Tough 5 set loss to Ball St this morning, but rebounded nicely by beating Gonzaga in 4 sets at their own invitational this afternoon.

GCU beats Montana in straight sets to move to 5-1 on the season. Looking forward to see what this team can do in conference play before I buy in completely.

RE: WAC Volleyball 2019
NMSU now 6-0 but lost two to UTEP today. Wins over SEC, OVC, Big East, MWC, CUSA and WCC. Not too shabby.

Current records after the second week of tournaments are as follows:
NMSU 6-0 (defeated UNM 3-0)
GCU 5-1 (defeated UNM 3-2)
Seattle 4-2
UTRGV 5-2
Chicago St 3-4 !!! Not in last place for the conference in something! Have beaten NIU, Alabama St and Western Carolina.
UVU 2-5
KC 1-3
CBU 1-5
CS Bakersfield 1-5

Essentially every team has a tournament scheduled each weekend until the end of the month, then conference play begins.

Chicago State also came very close to knocking off Oklahoma, it came down to five points in the fifth set.

Good to see Bakersfield leave the WAC in fiery flames and ashes in all sports. Going to be a bottom dweller in the Big West.

RE: WAC Volleyball 2019
I don't want to derail this thread with regard to volleyball. But on the topic of Cal State Bakersfield, looking at CSUB basketball strictly, I thought the Runners would battle for a BWC championship in its first season. However, that was when Jarkel Joiner was still on the team. If Richmond transfer DeMonte Buckingham can fill Joiner's void, the Runners "might" be pretty good when they join the BWC. Although, recently Rod Barnes has had a lot of turnover within his program.

RE: WAC Volleyball 2019
Overall Friday was a good day for the conference. Two wins each by Cal Baptist, CSU Bakersfield, and a win by Seattle and GCU. NMSU drops their first game to Portland who is now 6-0. Lots of games today.

Lopes have now equaled or bested their win totals from 2015 (7), 2016 (6), & 2017 (8). I mean... the bar wasn't set very high, but still! Haha.. GCU volleyball only four wins away from equalling their 2nd highest win total in the D1 era.

Not bad for a team picked to finish 7th in the WAC. Either the WAC is going to be extremely good this year or the Lopes are much, much better than predicted.
