Ill add the caveat that if he runs the table in Cusa, it will save his job. We may laugh at that idea, but Cusa is so terrible you just never know until you play them. Of course, beat Troy and i still think he needs 8 reg season wins to save his job. Heck, as bad as Cusa is, 9 should be the bar this year.

So no, the Troy game won't seal Hop's fate lol. Thread title should just read "season should seal Hop's fate".

Ha. Well thread title says "should" seal fate not "will" seal fate. That was on purpose. But yeah, i get your point and was aware of that as wrote the caveat.

Ill say this; The Troy game will weigh heavily on the season outcome and Hops coaching tenure here. If beats Troy, we should be fine in conference. Lose and his head is on the chopping block. Not much room for error if losses this weekend, imo. If wins, then maybe the worlds not falling apart after all.

Will be interesting. In short, the Troy game will likely be a microcosm of the season. If i were betting, win and hes fine, lose and hes fired at seasons end.

I just really think you're inflating how good MSU is by not letting that loss be damning in and of itself. They're going to be a 3-4 win team this year. They're one dimensional playing a ton of Freshmen. And we got pounded by them, even when we knew exactly what they were going to do.

I'm honestly surprised so many are giving us a chance at Troy.

Hope.....

did you mean Hop(s)?

New coaching staff and new players in new roles weren't tested in week 1, and have a bye in week 2. Whereas Southern Miss retains most of their staff and players, especially from a defense that was very good last season, with two games under their belt. I'd say those are the main reasons.

They're 2-0 and will be favored in 6 of the remaining 10. I'll take the over on your 4.

I've seen numerous posts like this across several of our boards with people claiming that State is terrible and there are no excuses for losing to them, etc, etc. These people are living in the past. We haven't beaten MSU in over 30 years (Reagan was still president)! THREE DECADES! The landscape of college athletics has dramatically changed since then with Southern Miss and Mississippi State headed in complete opposite directions. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with the current state of our program, but the amount of people overly upset about losing last Saturday is mind-boggling. Did people really expect us to win that game? Do they think we should expect to win road games versus an SEC team that recruits 40-50 spots higher than us? That's not rational! This isn't the 1980s. We'll never be that again. Our best hope is to get out of CUSA and build back up to one of the better non-P5 programs, because right now we are nothing more than middle of the pack G5.

Because they were super young, had key injuries and top players out, and their entire offense was running it to the left and right with one player. That won't work in the SEC. They're going to be exploited incredibly hard all year long. And at the end of the year, we'll look back and say we missed a chance on one of the most beatable teams State has had this decade.

I still believe we should be good enough to beat decent SEC teams like we did in the 70's and 80's. Hayell, NTSU beat a horrible Arkansas squad last year and Tennessee can't even beat GA State or BYU at home (we woulda wet our pants in both those games)

For 90 years, So Miss went into EVERY game expecting to WIN, no matter the team we faced or circumstances, That'is what separated us from Tulane, Memphis, ECU etc.

We now play soft, trying so hard to NOT get blown out we give ourselves no chance to win. We are now the teams we used to dominate, while many of them play like we USED to.

Yeah, I know we beat UK but that took a MIRACLE and a backfield full of NFL talent. Have we looked that aggressive or gung ho since? You know that answer...04-cheers

This is completely false. Every player they started on offense was a Junior or Senior. They started a reshirt freshman at DT, other than that all their defensive starters were Juniors or Seniors. 21 of 22 starters were JRs or SRs. They did play a bunch of younger guys in the second half after they game's outcome was in hand.

They were missing 1 offensive line starter that had been injured the week before and he was replaced by a Jr. They were missing one linebacker due to suspension and he was replaced by a Sr.

Their starting QB was tearing us up before he went out with an injury. He was something like 9 of 10 with a couple TDs. They were doing whatever they want to do offensively.

Your narrative doesn't match reality.

Most of you are right. Hopson should be gone with anything less than 8 wins. I have little faith that we'd fire him. As said before the "one of us crowd" rose to the top after Monken left. Those old fools crave stability, even if it is on a sinking ship in the middle of a body of water on fire.

We've had success with OCs from Okie State.. Find a young hungry OC who has his sights set at being a HC, we know what we're getting... Let's energize the fan base.. My tenure at USM we had Bower, I graduated and we got Fedora shortly there after.. We took a season off from playing football, pissed away $1 Million+, and brought in Monk.. My heart says another year with Monk and we'd won the conference, and Monk would've definitely left after that to pursue the NFL gig... We got stuck with Hop-Along Jay and now we have a young AD who wants to energize the base, let's let him find a coach that could do it.

A guy that would be interesting to look at, and he may have no interest, but Bill Bedenbaugh at Oklahoma would be a great pickup I believe. He's one of the best recruiters in the nation, has the top offense in the country at Oklahoma, specializes in Offensive Line, etc. Seems like he might fit what we're looking for. Makes $750k a year as Co-OC at Oklahoma.

Again, anyone who says anything less than that I don't want. You think Boise got to where they did, because they wanted to hire a "stepping stone" job. Hell no! You think UCF made the run, they wanted a stepping stone coach who gave them an undefeated season?

We are a stepping stone job. Accept it brother. If a coach isn't saying that in 5 years I see myself head coaching a prime time P5 school then we really don't need to hire them. That simple. We need young hungry coaches. We've seen what they can do. We've also seen what "he's one of us" coaches have done. It's a no brainer. We'll never be able to keep a super successful coach here at USM. The absolutely most I could see us paying a HC (and that's with all hands on deck, EC/CoC/season tix #'s up) is 900 or maybe a mill (which sadly enough is avg for CUSA). That's it. And even only paying that won't be enough to get snagged by a P5 offering 3-3.5 mil.

College ‘amateur’ athletics is out of control. When the highest paid public employee in almost every state is a college football coach we have jumped the shark. In many cases it is dozens of the highest paid. I don’t know what the answer is, but when we are talking paying coaches millions of dollars to just keep up, something has gotten out of whack. I’m not to far from turning my back to a the whole thing.....

Boise and UCF's coaches both moved on to bigger jobs. I don't get it. Success for a school like USM is the coach leaving for a better job in 3 or 4 years. If we have to fire one in that timeframe we are just digging a bugger hole. Good young coaches don't want to go to a place where the ladt guy couldn't make it. They want to be the next in line at a winner.

When the highest paid public employee in almost every state is a college football coach we have jumped the shark. In many cases it is dozens of the highest paid. I don’t know what the answer is, but when we are talking paying coaches millions of dollars to just keep up, something has gotten out of whack. I’m already there. Aside from USM, I don’t pay much attention to it any more. Aside from my wife’s alma mater, my only interest in major college football at this point is pulling for G5s to upset P5s and rooting for that institution that harbored a child molester to lose by 90 points every week. Neither of those tends to pan out very well.
