Their contract with DirecTV/AT&T is up on 9/30 (five year deal they signed in 2014 is up). They started running ads tonight on MNF. Also including the ABC O&Os as well.

Do we really think Direct TV is going to commit suicide on 9/30?

Every cable company and streaming service will have ads and deals ready for release on October 1st. "DirecTV Customers! Switch today to keep your sports and Disney channels, and get 50% off your first year with us!"

I have to agree, ESPN is not longer invincible. ESPN is now only in around 85 million households and still dropping. Remember only 20% of cable subscribers watch cable sports. Apparently, those who already cut the cord don’t care about ESPN.
Thinking how the 1 million plus subscribers loss they have just in the first half of the year is concerning and need to trim costs which means not giving Disney the amount they are asking for.

It's not just ESPN though.... Disney Channel is a big thing as well(plus Disney Jr.).

What has happened is these providers like AT&T (and Comcast) have raised the price of internet service to the point where they don't care if you drop TV - they'll make their money from your internet service.

...and since most of these ISPs have de facto local monopolies, they know you don't have anywhere else to go (satellite internet? I don't think so!)

Charter high speed internet unbundled cost literally more than twice what it does bundled with television.

I do have four high speed ISPs in the area, but Charter is the only one with no transfer caps and true high speed. (One is a Wireless high speed ISP that caps out at ye olde DSL speeds. I don't mean wireless like cellular ... I mean 2.4 GHz directional high gain antennas pointed at a distribution tower on a mountain top.)

I'm still winning price wise relative to being bundled with Charter though. And I don't have to call every 6 months and play whack-a-mole in the phone system until I find somebody willing to give me the teaser rate again. I suspect when Hulu launches with the full Disney streaming assortment I can save even more by switching to them.

Out of curiosity, how many million households did ESPN peak at?

I'm not sure if they publish their numbers, but I wonder what ESPN+ subscribership is at now. As a MAC fan it's perfect since it covers the vast majority of games, I'm sure I'm not alone. I never even cut the cable really, you have to have it first...

If you don't want to cancel DirecTV immediately, find a streaming service with a free trial, use it over the weekend, and then cancel before you're charged.

Peaked at around 112 million households.

In the grand scheme of things, sports fans don’t really matter. We’re a drop in the bucket. But it’s the viewers of Wheel of Fortune and Bachelor in Paradise who will move the needle.

I can't I need sun ticket for my Packers and fantasy football. I don't wanna watch the 49ers, Raiders, and Rams every wk. 49ers over Rams gms in Fresno making it worse. Plus I just came back after 7 yrs of being my cousin's "vacation home" for directv.

like what youtube tv? I have comcast for internet already.

Yes. Go to this site: https://www.suppose.tv/tv

Plug in all of your must have channels, and the site will return your best streaming options based on your channels. It also lets you know which services are offering free trials right now.
