Good read but Mark G. Being from Michigan (?), he doesn’t know the history of Tiger BB. We have never tolerated bad basketball and show our displeasure by not buying season tickets and not showing up. Attendance falls dramatically-coach gets fired here. Because a basically sold out FedExForum supports virtually every other sport we have.
At Tennessee, the hillbillies keep buying tickets no matter how bad they are and Tennessee gets over $40M a year in extra revenue. So no financial pressure to make a change as it is here

Yeah after the BYU loss I went to Volnation to see the meltdown and someone said...
"I hope next home game no one shows up. If they only see 40-50k in the stands they will know we arent putting up with this"....
only 40-50k in the stands.

I feel like the better comparison would be from Porter to Fuente, then make the Fuente to Norvell connection. It doesn't cross sports (which doing is shameless, imo - clickbait to bring in the Memphis Bball eyes) and the comparison still stands and helps the author make the further point of building momentum for the future. As a college graduate, I would grade it a solid B-.

UTK hasn't won an SEC title or SEC-East title since 1998. UTK is no longer relevant. Recruits today only know UTK as a SEC-East bottom feeder, they weren't even born when UTK last had "tradition".

It's apples and oranges ... You can't compare football and basketball. I don't follow Tennessee football much so I won't offer any opinions on their coaches or players. If it was another bad hire then Fulmer needs to take one for the team and retire. But the truth about UT football has been stated over and over. There's not enough good D1 football talent in Tennessee. Especially the East end. And they've been bad so long they can't get those 5 starz from out of State.

UTK is in a tough spot...
Anyone who can get to the SEC championship game @ UTK will quickly get plucked to go to one of the easier jobs in the country.
UTK is closer to UK in football than they are to Georgia or Alabama.

Firing coaches almost always involves finances. So comparing finances IS apples to apples. I think I read an article that stated UT is actually running a deficit in AD. How many fired FB and basketball coaches are they still paying? They have a large revenue flow but expenses and all the facility renovations are fairly high.

I always find it funny how Memphis fans are so quick to sound exactly like national people who trash Memphis...
Memphis was all Calipari, without Calipari Memphis is just a low level school. Wait and see, without Cal, Memphis won't do anything, they are no longer relevant...
Then we go out and hire crap coaches like Pastner and Tub, and everyone around the country... See, no one can win at Memphis, we told you... Memphis is crap.... we were right....
UTk has all the potential anyone worth a damn could ask for. If you can't win big at UTk, you can't win big anywhere. Just because their admin is crap and the coaches they have hired are crap, doesn't mean they can't be really good.
Fuente was able to win at Memphis.... Norvell is winning at Memphis...
You want to tell me Norvell can win at a place like Memphis but he would be crap at UTk?

You measure UTKs ability to succeed against their peers.
Norvell is succeeding on essentially a level playing field with the top of the AAC and he has advantages over the majority of the OOC teams we play.
UTK is not competing on a level playing field with UGA or Florida and are not on the same planet as LSU or Alabama.
Can a good coach get UTK to a bowl, definitely...A coach who can win an SEC championship at UTK has performed a miracle and deserves to be national coach of the year.

UT cannot be a national power while Clemson, Alabama, and Georgia are good. They need to go into those states to get recruits bc Tennessee doesnt produce enough D1 talent. And while all 3 of those schools are running full bore you just arent going to steal kids from them.

It's been 21 yrs, guys since UTK won even a SEC East. Time to accept the new UTK tradition, it is the new reality. Lots of money & facilities but the Vols will be lucky to win 6 games & get the Birmingham Bowl for most of their future over the next 20 yrs against their peers in the SEC.

No college team will be good with a bad coach.
Memphis can be elite in basketball with a very good coach because it's a very unique situation: basketball city, tremendous fan support, fertile recruiting grounds
Memphis can be good, not elite, in football with a good coach. It can't overcome the inherent advantages that the SEC grants its schools, although it can overcome that in basketball.
Tennessee can be elite, maybe, with an elite coach. That's it. Otherwise a good coach has them top 25 and middle of the pack in the SEC. An average or below coach and they are getting pounded. They don't have the recruiting base to overpower UGA, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU etc etc. ever. The only thing UT has going for it (as do many of the SEC schools) is a combination of a large obsessed fan base living in places where there's not much else to do besides obsess over college football.

Norvell could win at UT, but win the $EC? Against 'Bama, Georgia and Florida, while having Dabo Sweeney at Clemson? I like Norvell and he's a great coach, but, that's a mighty tall order.
I would remind you that UTK hasn't been to a BCS bowl game this CENTURY. And, with Pruitt in charge, the BCS bowl will last another 5 years. 25 years without a BCS bowl is a long, long time.

This was identical to GP's radio show yesterday. I feel like they had a long convo on the topic over New Amsterdam vodka then agreed to share material.

In 2012 or 13 it was revealed UT athletics was over $200 million in debt.

Any place that can put roughly 100K fans in the seats can compete to win the national title.
UTK is in that elite category. The right snake oil guy can do it there.

We all think Nebraska has been down since their glory years under Osborne but they have been great compared to UTK. When you haven't been "elite" for 20+ years, like UTK, you are no longer elite.
