Interesting, certainly a very talented player who didn't seem to quite have his head together as a young man. however, basketball players often surprise me as they grow into men.

"Dohn Prep Program is a tuition-free program for athletically-gifted students seeking academic support and competitive, NCAA qualifying play.
• Free tuition
• Van transportation to and from school, sports, provided
• Three meals a day, 7 days a week, included
• Student pays expenses for housing and personal incidentals "

Wonder how it's funded.

Yep. Took several thou to throw games and eventually sentenced to probation. How a guy with that background plays pro and is then in charge of high school kids is beyond me.

Sounds like a low-brow IMG Academy, Prolific Prep, or whatever the school Deion Sanders and Emmanuel Mudiay got burned for in Dallas. They're popping up all over the place, just feeding the beast of kids thinking they're going to make it in sports.

I’m all for it. But it is on his resume’. And I should not have said he was paid to throw games, he was paid to shave points. Not much different in my mind, though.

I don't make any apologies for point shaving, it's a sh!tty thing to do to your team, fans and the game. I certainly think a 20 year old who wrongly thinks it's OK to throw the ball away at the end of a blowout win to get the spread under 16 (these were the type of allegation he pled to) can learn from that mistake and be a solid adult down the line. Many people redeem themselves from youthful mistakes and are given the leeway to do so even though their mistakes often had more direct consequences on other humans. Sammy Villegas now at 37 or whatever is not the same man he was in college I'm sure. Apparently, he's matured a lot to be in his current position. I'd assume playing pro ball in his 20s he had to account for the point shaving investigation to many people and justify and prove his capacity to be a reliable honest teammate. It's likely he addressed it to himself and others quite throughly.

There's seems to be a whole lot of 'free' associated with this school, which makes you wonder where the $$$ is coming from. Hope it's on the up-and-up, but history also says for many redemption stories there are the others who always think they can find a way to 'game' the system.
Time will tell which for Villegas.

RE: Sammy Villegas
I agree that he could very well be a whole different person, but his specific case to me is sad. Sammy came into UT with the ability to drop 3 point bombs from anywhere. I remember an NIT game (i believe) at Marquette, where he hit a three from one of their logos, close to half court. When he started taking money, he couldn't hit anything. I truly believe his decision to take money permanently screwed up his game.
