Where do people get this from? I hear it a lot. I go to this stadium several times a year. I've been to many other stadiums and the LB It is not horrible, it is not bad, it is not even average. Its pretty good actually. It has a little age on it, that's all.

Agreed. It is very good for a stadium that does not have a professional franchise playing in it.

The Liberty Bowl is fine... it just has about 20k too many seats.

No...what it has is a market of over 1 million people and a university that has yet to make a firm committment to hire the person who is in charge of filling up the empty seats. Until that person is hired....and there are people who do this for a living...we will see a bunch of empty seats.

Time to make a committment to fill up those seats instead of the current haphazzard treatment of the situation.

Exactly who is IN CHARGE of filing up those empty seats? You know....the person who will be fired if they do not do the job they were hired to do? I need a name

FACT: The population of Knoxville is 179,000 and they can fill up a 100,00+ stadium. So...seems like filling 64,000 seats in Memphis should not be that much of a problem unless you simply are not committed to doing it.

Knoxville is smaller than Memphis but it is over 800k metro and Memphis is 1,300,000 .

Put urk in Cusa for 20 years and have them have losing seasons for 18 of those , then let them have 5 or 6 winning seasons in the American they will have a tough time drawing 50k in their stadium

Our stadium is way to big for our school and league.

I used to capitulate to that way of thinking. Then I saw what ECU does. We can do it.
BTW, Dallas Tiger, it's not 64,000 anymore. It's 57,000.

RE: Stadium naming rights
Its not about putting 57k butts in the seats... its about putting 40k butts in the seats willing to pay $30 per ticket.

A 57k-60k seat stadium limits the money the school can charge per seat.

When the FEF was named, it was brand new, state of the art, and offered access to a major league sports franchise, a top 25 basketball team, and any major event that could come through the city. The city was able to offer FedEx suites and block seats to all the games of an NBA team, including playoffs, and Tiger basketball, along with the inside track to any CUSA (now AAC) tourney, any NCAA tourney, any concert, or any major event that comes through. That could be over 100 events a year featuring Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, etc., CJP's #1 recruiting class ( or maybe X's, depending on the time, I can't fully remember) and world-wide advertising that came every time the Grizzlies were mentioned - there still isn't anything else like it in Memphis. Fortune 500 companies would line up around the block to at least discuss that option.

Honestly, not being mean - what does the LB offer? The Liberty Bowl itself is in horrible shape and notoriously outdated. The tiger football team is good now, but is anybody dying to see Missouri State, SMU, and Temple? The Liberty Bowl event is nice but it's one game of mid-tier teams that come from god-knows where. Honestly, what else is there? I mean, that's seven or eight events a year by my count - what practical, wanted commodity does the LB offer?

not true...the Liberty Bowl used to be in horrible shape:

ECU having a hard time with crowds, they had an announced crowd of 34,118 for their home opener.

If we are creative with premium seating, tarps, etc. We can cut available tickets, build demand and then "add" tot he stadium by removing tarps.

Also, it would be nice to actually TRY to sell season tickets.

It was in horrible shape because MidSouth Fair/Libertyland (same entity) had control of most of parking area for about 20 days of 10 day Fair. They had a very powerful, politically connected board. Attempt was made to move Fair to Agricenter and close Libertyland but failed.

That would have expedited Tiger Lane in some fashion to late 80s to early 90s.

So. let's look at BOISE STATE. Metro Market size 708,000, about half of Memphis. Stadium naming rights sold to ALBERSTON'S. Average attendance at each home game about 33,000. By the way, BYU is not in the SEC and had about 10,000 fans at the game last weekend. That would mean there were about 90,000 Teneessee fans for a non conference game against what they would perceive to be a much inferior opponent.

I suggest we try something completely different.

Let's name the stadium The Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Let's give $1 a ticket to St. Jude for every event in the stadium.

Instead of asking a sponsor to pay us for naming rights, let's give them away to a sponsor that will bring us more publicity than we could possibly buy.

This is one place where we could all win.
