Not bad stats for Crum.

Not too many seasons when the FCS opponent we have will not be the weakest team on our schedule. I think this is one of those seasons.

RE: Week 2 - Kennesaw State at KSU
Glad we won, but that game was frustrating. Some real dumb penalties and we should never attempt to catch a punt the rest of the year. Send 11 for the block and just let it bounce.

The lack of attempting to pass is frustrating and confusing. Seemed like we only threw it when we absolutely had to, but McKoy appeared to be a big mismatch problem for them. Did Dixon even play? I never heard his name. Also, switching QBs on 2nd and goal at the 4 was odd and not a good idea. Second straight week it felt like watching a Paul Haynes offense.

anti-zip, I'm happy for the win, but I felt the same way. I don't, at least not yet, see all that much improvement over the prior regime.

Two positive thoughts. Matt Bahr had one heck of a game. He's a tackling machine. The defense in general was really good. Also, Trickett is a very good kicker. He's pretty much automatic and was unphased by the pressure kicks today. That 43 yarder to win it cleared by a lot. I hope we give him a shot at some 50+ kicks this year.

Trickett had FG's in high school from 59 and 55 yards. I don't know if they would have made it with college goal posts, which are narrower. At least they used to be narrower. I don't know if they still are.

Game was in Dix, correct? Some on twitter are claiming it was because we wanted to shoot off fireworks.

Glad that we won, but I am not sure that the best team won.

Hi Danny,

It was because of fireworks. They light off fireworks when the team runs out onto the field.
Apparently there was a little more than an hour to go before kickoff, so they probably could have finished the game.
Simple solution would have been to not shoot off the fireworks.
Kent State often schedules field hockey teams with the hope of attracting more than one game in the weekend. The neutral site opportunity makes the trip worth the money for teams like Maine and Temple.
The shortsightedness of our athletic director means that Maine and Temple did not get the benefit of the promised neutral site game, and that could hurt KSU in several areas.

1. It looks horrible on a national level. The PR embarrassment wasn't worth the fireworks. Already ugly commentary by ESPN talking heads, articles on Yahoo Sports, etc.
2. It could be a (another) Title IX violation.
3. It could lead to (another) court case. Maine and Temple will expect KSU to reimburse its travel expenses... also not worth the fireworks.
4. It will likely make it more difficult to schedule similar two-for-one opportunities in the future with field hockey or other teams. Why would anyone trust KSU?
5. The Kent State Athletics name continues to be diminished. Our AD does not have a good reputation even within our own conference. He has burned a lot of bridges in the last nine years.

It'll be interesting to see if Joel shows his face at the field hockey game tomorrow.

My prediction is he won't.

Let me get this straight... are people suggesting we give two random field hockey teams precedent over the full Kent State Football game day experience? It’s not a Title IX violation. We shoot fireworks during our football games. The two field hockey teams knew this ahead of time. They refused to play any earlier. They also couldn’t manage to score a single point. Field hockey is never going to get the nod over football. Not until 20,000 people start showing up to field hockey. Get over it.

Yes. People are upset about it.

Even if you don't believe field hockey matters, it should be worth it to an athletic director to avoid a PR embarrassment by simply considering the options in the moment. The Kent State name is taking a hit, and it didn't have to.

You even had three former directors of Kent State Athletics rip the way this was handled on social media today. All of those former directors left Kent State because of the way the department treats women. The previous field hockey coach even left because of the way the department treats women, filing a formal EEOC complaint before she left.

This is a symptom of a real problem.

The AD is also known for making knee-jerk decisions without considering the consequences. He thinks he knows it all, so he doesn't take or even seek out the advice of people who may be experts around him.

It's a field hockey PR problem now, which many of you might not care about. But it's an example of a problem with the leader of this department. Today it's field hockey. What will it be next?

Well I don’t mean to be rude but those people can suck my big toe. For decades I’ve seen our football program so utterly devalued it makes me physically ill. Just look at some of the comments and false outrage regarding this. It’s laughable. Not to mention those field hockey teams are funded by football teams most likely.

I get it. I care about the football program.

But I also worked in an athletic department where my female colleagues were constantly devalued, sexually harassed, forced into early retirement.

I'm fed up with that.

Fireworks aren't going to fix the problem with Kent State football.

The problem that led to this PR embarrassment is part of the symptom that keeps KSU football from being successful.

Hold the guy in charge accountable!

If so, that's a shame.

It's a shame that women don't matter at Kent State.

I may come across angrier than I should be, but I've seen too many friends and colleagues get treated so poorly for so long.

Woody Barrett is stunning. Was he simply beat out in practice or is someone trying to send a message? Crum did a good job and didn’t seem to make the risky play. But I think Trickett should change the philosophy. Just get near the 30 and you’re getting points.

RE: Week 2 - Kennesaw State at KSU
JimJoyce, football is not funding field hockey. Football operates at an annual loss. I agree with all David says, and I'm at a loss as to why they haven't changed ADs. Yes, football is important and I'm sure they average more fans per game than any other sport on campus. But I'm also sure that more Kent State alumni, students and residents within a reasonable driving distance are more interested in some other college football team, primarily Ohio State, than they are in Kent State football. Why do they even want to spend money on fireworks? Fireworks have been done to death. I can see using them after a win, or maybe even after a score, but that's it. And whatever happened to the "plan" to make men's basketball the marque sport? I'm not aware of anything substantial being done in that area. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I get it. The popular thing nowadays is to hate on the AD for everything. And I get that many people (sadly including a lot of former student-athletes) think football is a lost cause. I guess I’m just naive enough to think it’s worth having.
