RE: ACC Network
Ok, so actually I was wrong about where they are in the Comcast contract. The contract with Comcast runs three more years. For some reason I thought it ran through 2027.

https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/Pitt...1908190014

I don't want to be like "three years without the network is no big deal", but it's also kind of like, not a huge deal. It's kind of right in that not-sweet spot (sour spot?) where it's far enough out that Comcast might be willing to dig in their heels, but yet close enough that Disney is willing to just wait it out. Again, if it means getting a better deal...I hope they wait it out.

Now it makes sense that the ACC keeps talking about a three year build up for the revenue realization. That three years is Comcast contract. So I guess they've always been willing to wait that out.

Good quote from that link by the way that pretty much sums it up:

Both ESPN and ACC executives were confident that a deal with Comcast would materialize in the future. The future is what they’re focused on, a focus bolstered by the recent history of conference networks and the leverage of ESPN’s omnibus agreements. Basically, you can get it if you really want it, and sooner or later everyone will get it anyway.

Unfortunate that Frontier won't be carrying it at this time. But this should be music to everyone's ears:

ACC Network is quite expensive.

Unfortunately, in order to get the biggest audience possible, ESPN/ACC Network would require that Frontier include their network in our most popular packages.

This is pretty encouraging to me. I think the smart fear was not "what if they can't get the ACC network picked up", the fear was "How much will they really be able to charge for it?"

This is basically confirmation that they aren't just giving it away. A lot of the predictions that the ACC would be lucky to get half the rate the SECN gets...well I'm not so sure that is going to be true, and that's great news.

It's not going to be about what the ACCN is "worth" relative to the SEC, it's always been about how much ESPN could force the carriers to take. I'm glad to hear it's expensive.

Now...Comcast is still a very big dog here. I'm not terribly worried about Dish, about them not carrying it, or what if they don't (and rumors are they will anyway). There certainly aren't any good rumors or leaks coming out about Comcast. I'm guessing they're betting people don't really cancel, so we'll just have to cross our fingers that cancellations come in enough volume to push them over.

There are enough carriers now that the ACC Network isn't dead on arrival. It can weather a year or two without Comcast if it comes to it. But I don't know long term if the ACCN thrives without Comcast, Comcast eventually could become what DirectTV is to the PAC, the albatross around it's neck.

I don't think it will come to that, Disney has a lot of tools in it's toolbox to eventually get Comcast on board, but I'm starting to doubt we see the ACCN on Comcast this year.

But isnt the real question, concerning any of these networks that are currently refusing the ACCN, how long can their product be viable without all of the Disney owned channels??? I thought I read in another article that quoted an ACC official as saying eventually when the contracts to renew the other Disney owned channels come-up, they will bundle the ACCN with those other channels.

When does Frontier's contract with Disney come up for renewal? For that matter, how big in Frontier?

A quick google search doesn't turn up any press releases about a Frontier/Disney carriage agreement in recent years. I can find releases about a Viacom agreement from 2014, so hopefully their last Disney deal was prior to that, which would put it up soon probably.

Looks like their footprint doesn't cover much ACC country, outside of Tampa and a couple chunks of central NY, so not sure if that's going to be enough leverage for them to add it. They're mostly in the west and midwest.

That looks like one they'll probably have to wait out.

I’m a Dish customer & that is what they are telling me as well today. That seems to be their standard response. Just copy & paste.

“At this time, we do not have a contract to carry ACC Network. We are working with the owner of the ACC Network to see if a fair agreement can be reached to carry this channel on DISH’s line-up, before its launch. Our top priority is to provide our customers with the best TV experience possible at the best value. -JM”

Verizon FiOS will have it on 329 (SD) & 829 (HD).

The State has a long article on ACCN.

Frontier is the first carrier to say that they won't carry ACCN. They object to having to include ACCN on their most popular packages.

its 388 on spectrum here in upstate ny as well

Imagine the biggest network in North Carolina not showing UNC bbasketball. This is very bad for FSU football in the state of Florida while everyone can watch UF.

Yeah, it seems like they picked 2019 to launch because they knew many of these contracts were up for renewal this year... unfortunately Comcast isn't one of them.

I thought Charter/Spectrum was the largest cable network provider in NC. Either way, the ACCN being carried in the state of NC is the last thing we should worry about regarding distribution of the ACCN. It will be shown there.

Spectrum is the largest cable operator in NC. I think that the point being made was that the largest cable operator in FL is Comcast and not having Comcast carrying ACCN would be a very big deal to FSU (and Miami) fans in FL; that they would be as unhappy as fans of the NC schools would be if Spectrum weren't going to carry ACCN.

If Comcast is that big in FL, Comcast has a hell of a lot to lose if they don't get on the ACCN bus. At least, I hope they see it that way.

Yep, if Florida State and Miami fans care enough to switch over it, it will get done. If they don't care enough, Comcast wins and they wait to 2022 for it. That's always been one of the charges of skeptics, that ACC fans wouldn't put enough pressure on the carriers to force the pickup. That may be the case.

Thankfully, there are enough options now with the streaming that nobody is shut out if they want it, but for the sake of the revenue hopefully enough will switch to force Comcast on board.

Will be interesting if there's any movement between the GT-Clemson game on the 29th, and the FSU game on the 31st. For a lot of people facing a switch, they're not going to be willing to believe it until that Clemson game passes without the ACCN. If it does, Friday the 23rd will be a brutal cancellation day for Comcast in Florida.

Ah, I understand. Thank you for clarifying. It seems to me that it depends on FSU and the U fans to help get Comcast to bend. If FSU is the biggest tv brand in the ACC as claimed, flex your muscle, like UF.

Well, I think I'm just going to switch back to HuluTV then. That puts Orange+Sports at $35. For $9 more you get a lot more channels (the Fox stations you don't get on Orange), all the sports channels, a half ass DVR, and a phenomenal VOD library. That's worth the extra for me.

The interface pretty much sucks, but I had Hulu last football season, and they've pretty much got all the football games on every conceivable sports station. I can't remember not having access to a game really, including things on like CBS Sports network and that kind of thing.

Check out YouTube TV at $50 for all the major sports channels but NFL Network

If you want NFL network check out Vue at $55

Comcast is already hemorrhaging subscribers. I think Comcast is also big in Northern Virginia (think UVA). In fact, that FSU @ UVA game may be the tipping point.

Keep in mind also that ESPN has announced an ACCN All-ACC "watch party" for the Miami/Florida game this Saturday night on the ACC Network -- so Canes fans may not miss the game itself, but they'll miss a lot of pro-Miami TV if they don't have ACCN by then... and of course their game @ UNC on ACCN looms as well.

Yeah I've had Youtube TV and it's fine but, I'll deal with a weirder interface to pay $5 less and get the massive VOD library Hulu has. YoutubeTV at $40 worked for me, and $50 not so much.

Yep, I'm actually more confident in Comcast coming on than I have been, knowing they are up in just three years.

In light of that, you see Swofford and ACC folks and ESPN folks have mentioned over an over again that it's up to a three year ramp up. Three years to full carriage. It's all over these media pieces.

And that corresponds exactly to Comcast's contract. So essentially, from day one, they've been signalling to Comcast that they'll absolutely wait them out, because they know, we know, everyone knows it's going to be on Comcast in 2022.

So basically, Comcast is looking at 2-3 more years of slight savings in not carrying it. Which makes sense, if you don't think you're losing significant customers. But the cost of re-acquiring people is ridiculous...signing someone up costs tons in marketing, discounts, installation.

It's especially dangerous to Comcast, because most of those people would be breaking their cherry for streaming services, after resisting for several years now. Whether fear or inertia or not wanting to buy devices, for whatever reason people still with Comcast have been resistant to dumping for streaming services...and nearly everyone who drops them for the ACCN is going to be going to a brave new world.

That's not good for Comcast. That's not the same as dumping Comcast for a different cable company. People that go from Comcast to YTTV or Hulu may very well never be recoverable.

What's three years early compared to that? I'm thinking Comcast caves once the cancellations start rolling in, as long as they do. I suspect that it may be between launch and the Clemson game, or even between the Clemson game and the FSU game. There just isn't all that great reason to hold out I don't think.

If the cancellations don't materialize, then they hold.
