So what is it, is it stubbornness to not adjust, or is it that he just doesn't recognize it. Both equally as bad but just curious as to your thoughts.
We only teach what we know. 3rd year HC.

Exactly. McGrath doesnt know anyway but the UNC way. That is standard among UNC coaching tree hires throughout college basketball and was my biggest concern with McGrath. Hopefully he will learn to be open to things outside of the box a la Wes Miller
As STILLJONESING alerted us to, EKU lead the country in possessions per game by pressing and recruiting players who can get up and down. I'll let you read A.W Hamilton (Keatts Protege) describe what they do:

"We want to play extremely fast and put pressure on the other team's defense," Hamilton said. "We want to push the tempo offensively. Make or miss, we want to run. On defense, we want to press. We want to trap. We want to cause havoc. The guys are going to be diving in the first row for loose balls. If you're sitting courtside, you've got to be ready. There's going to be balls flying all over the place. We're going to be trying to get our hands on balls and cause turnovers and deflections. We want to force 20 turnovers a game and get 50 deflections."

When Hamilton talks about playing fast, it isn't just "coach speak." It's a style of play that's ingrained in him.

"I'm not the kind of coach who says: "we're going to do this, we're going to do that. We're going to play up-tempo. We're going to press," Hamilton said. "I really mean it. This is how we're going to play. I played that way for Billy Hicks when I was in high school. I played that way for Kevin Keatts at Hargrave. When I played for Skip Prosser at Wake Forest, he played that way. It's an exciting style and I know the fans are going to love it."

Hamilton did offer a word of caution to Colonel fans.

"It's a style of play that takes time," he said. "There will be times of 'Oh my goodness, what is going on? Why did they get that wide-open three? How did they get this lay-up?' It's a process. Our fans are excited and we want to win, but we have to be patient. We've got a lot of new guys and, the guys we've got coming back, this is all brand-new to them too. We want to wear our opponents down with our pressure and force them into uncharacteristic shots. Our goal is to be the best conditioned team in the country and we know that doesn't happen overnight."

But then he added: "It will click. And when it does, it's going to be fun to watch. We need to get our scoreboard ready to get up to 100."

Man i'd love it if these quotes were coming out of UNCW.....sigh.....

Because it's REAL talk coming from the HC's mouth as to what the VISION for his team is. Even to the casual fan, after reading this you go the game expecting to see something similar, quality varying but at the very least you should expect guys to be flying around the court aggressively looking to defend or break.
Maybe someone can answer me this: What did CB say our style of play is on the court? If he indeed was thinking of implementing UNC basketball I haven't seen or heard it. Shouldn't the VISION for this Hawk team be easily explained by all of us on this discussion board at this point in year 3?

I agree. I think there are a few ways to win at our level and it’s not clear what our identity is even to the fans who watch every game.

For those ripping Coach B’s style, I think it was pretty well suited for the mid major level and still would be. His teams moved their feet as well as anyone in the country and help side defense was a thing of beauty. As for the fouling, do you remember Coach Keatt’s teams. Good lord we fouled liked crazy.

I’m not knocking either style. I believe both can consistently win if implemented and executed effectively. This all comes back to Bass in my opinion. He wanted a splash hire and he slipped and had to go with C.B. He made one of the best hires in country with Keatts. He then underestimated the effect of changing our identity after having the three best consecutive seasons in our program’s history outside of the Blizzard era.

C.B is a great guy and I imagine is really good at talking to kids on the recruiting trail. But this is the off season where I would have done something rather drastic with our style of play and philosophy. You can blame it on the players not buying in in the past but that’s still on the coach. Now if it’s talent that is more understandable. However, I’d argue we had two of the more talented guys in all of mid major in our starting lineup last year.

RE: Italy
It all comes down to a donor who shall not be named and a very specific school in Greenville NC.

The donor made it very clear he wanted an assistant coach from Arizona named Pasternack. That coach only interviewed because of that donor connection to that school. Turns out he didn't want to move from the west coast when it was all said and done. Offer rejected, choice #1 gone.

The Greenville NC school KNEW they were getting rid of Jeff Lebo. When a certain coach from their past named Dooley popped up looking for a job at UNCW, the powers that be in Greenville picked up the phone and guaranteed a future position in Greenville. Just wait, and the job is yours. More money, better conference, better facilities. Notice there was never a "coaching search" with interviews of multiple coaches there. The deal was sealed before Lebo ever left. Offer #2 rejected, choice #2 gone.

That left coach #3. The end.

So, coach #3 had better put together a winning game plan in year #3 of a 5 year contract or at least a vision of a winning plan. Right now, there are only results to base judgment on and the results have been awful. I simply cannot see how this roster with this coach improves from last year unless we implement the press. Period. Our only saving grace could be that a conference that wasn't that good last year is even worse this year.

And to answer the direct question by Hawking. No, McGrath has never communicated his vision for this team or program to succeed and what it would look like on the court if the players were implementing his "plan". We just hear that the old players "weren't buying in" to this secret plan. The coaching statement above would have me fired up as a fan and fired up as a player. We don't have that at all.

That

You mean the same donor who was instrumental in running Brownell off in order to get Pasternack? The same donor that helped plunge our program into the depths of hell for 10 years? Yeh, tell me how that worked out for us. The main thing we learned from that was that money can be forgiven. And I only know of people, including myself, questioning if those players bought in. I was there when CB was introduced. He said then that he would get the right players here to play fast and defend. He now has his players. So the proof will be in the pudding.

Quite interesting posts from the last 3 people after me. I am not familiar with the politics of UNCW but it can be said that all programs have these same problems, however, it's the Athletic Director that is responsible for not only the hire but to hold that hire accountable during his tenure. I think it is integral that all UNCW fans/supporters/donors/players ask these questions to the HC out loud and in person if Bass won't: What kind of basketball are we trying to play? Now that you have 'your players' in year 3 what changes will you make to the defense that ranked near the bottom of D1? What is your vision for this program? How does your style of play differ from the UNC system you were schooled in?

UNC Wilmington’s C.B. McGrath on Italy trip:

Standout: Jay Estime - led team in scoring.

Surprise: "Physicality of game, or our 3 FR are ready to play.”

Learned: "We have perimeter depth and versatility.”

Concern: Rebounding

DNP: Ty Gadsden (hips), Jaylen Sims (ankle)

That is a bunch of speculation in my mind, especially the Dooley part.

Anyone care to talk about this group of players and how you see them fitting in after seeing them play a little?

My biggest take away from seeing this group play is that Boggs is ready to contribute. He's big too, I think he's going to see a lot more playing time than we were anticipating prior to the Italy trip. Dodd, Boggs, and Linssen is a frountcourt that's good enough to win in the CAA, especially with our talent at guard. It's key that those 3 guys stay healthy though.

Sims should be starting at the 4, I meant Boggs/Dodd/Linssen as options at the 5. I know nothing about Bowden, but we have to assume he's redshirting at this point. I honestly think he needs the year to develop. He seems very much a raw prospect. He could get by with his athleticism in D2, but he needs to get stronger and more skilled on this level. I didn't really see much from him in the game Hawking provided.

I think we have the talent to be a top 4 team in the CAA. I've thought that for the past 2 years. I do not think we have the system for them to reach that level in the CAA. If we had trouble on defense with Cacok, O'Connell and Cyntalla in the 4-5 spots, I can't see Linssen, Dowd and Boggs being better. The rest of the pieces are pretty much the same.

Press or die.........:-)

Good post 82 but I will argue that our post D was awful last year. Martin looked okay to me.

That was his point Bill, we had the bodies to actually have good D last year, and we didn't. It's a coaching issue not personnel.

While we might not have anyone to guard a Nathan Knight, I think Dodd could be the best rim protector we've had in quite some time. I'm with you on the pressing, but I also think our inside D will be better this season. Cylla wasn't good on D... I think Sims will be an all around step up from him this season at the 4
