Brewton Senior Lomax Freshman apples and oranges

I doubt AL will ever be the scorer Brewton is, but yeah, I expect A Lo to become a more complete player with experience.

03-lmfao how many points a game did Brewton average?

Ha ha ha. He didn’t get double figures, but he would have been relied on much more heavily if Martin had gone down. Last season he took less that 7 shots/game. However, KB was the type of player that could get to the rim and finish. He also improved his 3 point shooting. A Lo, well, teams barely guarded him most of the season.

We need Alex to facilitate, be able to get into the lane, hit a mid-range shot and pop a wide open three occasionally. If we are ever completely dependent on him getting his own shot, we’re in trouble.

Hopefully his offensive skill set will transform over the next few years and it will blow all of our minds. We've certainly had other local guards vastly improve over the years.

In my own, non-coach opinion, two things happened to Lomax's defense during the season.

1. He quit reaching in (so often) for steals. It worked for him in High School, but put him off balance against better D1 players.
2. He quit moving laterally so much and began playing angles on defense, which allowed him to stay in front of the quicker D1 guards.

I suspect Madlock and Penny helped him with these things.

There's also something intriguing which I read-that Lomax is a lights-out shooter from 3 point range when he gets his feet set. A huge, strong presence in the post from Wiseman, et al, should improve the spacing so ALo can get better shots off.

Lomax' growing a couple of inches ought to help him there, too.

Actually. One reason our guards got beat last year was our defensive scheme: they were playing to the opponents strong side-almost to HIS SIDE to force him to go to his weak side. We constantly did this and got beat and our bigs played matador D many times (can remember fuming because Maurice would make a perfunctory attempt to defend a driver to the basket when we had plenty of fouls to give).

I feel our defense kept us out of the tournament. Scoring 94 vs TN and losing by 10. That being said, Lomax did improve defensively but not what one should see after a Summer when a players game is made. On O, having feet set is very important; almost as important as shot selection. That’s one thing Cal’s teams rarely did was take bad shots post Wagner.

So stay between your man and basket, foul when you get beat and James is behind you (after he has one foul), move your feet, help defense, communicate and don’t reach. If everyone does most of that we will hold teams in 60s and low 70s even with the fast transition offense we play.

James and other bigs could watch some YouTube and watch how Keith Lee kept his blocked shots in bounds if he felt we had a good shot at our guys getting the ball. This could be an extra 2 possessions a game if he did this. Maybe the difference in a W vs a L.

Lol...@ blocking the ball in play...

Most guys are not looking to throw it out of bounds...But the bounce and quick reaction to get the ball it is extremely difficult to control. When your hand is moving 100mph just to get to the ball you cant really slow it down to keep it in bounds unless you just get there really early.

There is a skill to blocking a shot and keeping the ball in play... Keith Lee was one of the best we ever had at doing that.

Dana taught it and even talked about it on his TV show and had Keith (who was best at it and an extremely underrated athlete) and some teammates demonstrate it. Valuable skill to have. Since you obviously never watched Keith play, watch some games on Youtube. He rarely blocked the ball like most knuckleheads do and send it 10 rows into the stands but used finesse. Don’t make light of what you don’t know.
Such as the “100 mph” BS.

Some of us have played and understand that if you ain't there early you aren't going to have much a chance to softly block a shot unless you barely touch it.

But hey I am sure there is some secret technique in youtube videos that the best players in the world are unaware of.

Five things here are for sure:

Dana was a great basketball teacher

Keith Lee was the best at blocking shots inbounds to his teammates and benefited from Dana's coaching.

Macgar must not have been around during that time if he takes issue with this.

I don't generally agree with Wiseman but in this instance he is correct.

The verdict is still out on ALo.

While it is true, I also am pretty confident in saying it isn't something that can be taught to anyone. DJ Stephons could learn to block in play, Zbo would do good just to get up and get his hand on the ball to deflect it.

Pretty simple, anyone that didn't notice Alo was much better both offensively and defensively by the end of the season either wasn't watching the games or has an agenda.

I am an Old Timer and I think Larry Kenon was the best at Blocking shots. His hands were so big, he would go up and just grab the ball with his one hand instead of swatting it away.

Very rarely did Kenon actually do that. Great rebounder-one of the best I’ve seen in college but Keith was a better shot blocker. Dr Js hands were bigger than Kenons and he rarely did it also. I was a big ABA fan back in the day. Saw most home games.
