I think I saw 6 guys throwing. He blended in. Again this wasn't the type of practice for the QBs to show their stuff.

I get it as we all are. I will say this about Bowers. I was not disappointed. There have been other QBs who turned out not to be as good as advertised.
He has the arm strength as good as if not better than Childers.

One note from practice is that by passing in the middle of the field, which NIU almost refused to do these past couple of years, comes with risk. In practice one pass was deflected off a receivers hands and caught by the D. Mistakes happen but that was part of NIUs make-up. Reduce risk and play it safe. Frustrated so many fans but it won games and the MACC.

Now I expect this offense to be improved but at what risk. TBD.

Risk is fine. I never thought Id see the day where NIU as at or near the bottom in FBS offense, but that is what happened last year.

Yeah, something obviously needed to change.

I think adding Love, Ritchie and McCray will improve our offense, last year we probably had the worst wide receivers in MAC

Have to agree with you klake. This is the unit that scares me the most. I am hoping it was coaching and not talent.

the qb was bad for the wrs and the wrs were bad for the qb. neither could make the other better. Also, there was almost zero help from the TE position. that unit sucked last year. there are more playmakers this year compared to almost zero last.

most importantly, there will be a deep ball. Bowers has one, and if childers starts he will have developed one or will be replaced.

Commenting on wr vs qb...

I'd have to say the qb lowered the effectiveness of the wrs.

I'll point to Beebe in particular. Here is guy about to make an nfl roster and maybe becoming their slot wr. The NIU qb couldn't find him in our offense. (Yeah I know he was often injured but still).

Now 2 years later I hope we have improved enough both with qb skill and offensive schemes that we get to appreciate the wrs and TEs.

Really intrigued about Mccray, this kid could be something. His high school resume is pretty jaw dropping

Last year WR did not get separation from defenders. It is hard for a QB to throw into good coverage. From the sounds of it, Love might be guy

Apparently, he can kick the ball too (this is in response to Coach Hammock's Competition Wednesday's Call-Outs).

But dont overlook the most glaring limitation from last year, that was coaching by leaps leaps leaps and bounds

Offensive coaching was obviously a huge problem and one of the biggest reasons for all the Hammock excitement. But that was the same offense in the MACC game that struggled all year. The reason it worked was because Childers had the game of his life and the receivers played great. Had those two positions played like that all season you’d be looking at 11-3 or 12-2.

Carey couldn’t get it through his thick skull that it takes a special kind of QB to run that offense. Graham and Childers didn’t have the necessary skills. I’m glad to get back to a more standard QB friendly system.

In all fairness I also think Childers had an awesome second half of the MACC because we were down to the point where we let him play without fear...nothing to lose. Usually it was a reserved don’t F up type of game plan

Yep. And it seemed like whenever we took a lead the offense went back into its shell.

Childers had an excellent first half as well. 9-13, 128 yds, 1td, 0int. That’s a 9.8 ypc compared to his season avg of 5.5 ypc. NIU was also down 17 to Iowa, 16 to FSU and 17 to UAB and he didn’t really do anything. Maybe the coaching philosophy changed for the MACC and there was some “win one for the Gipper” speech, but really I think he just was feeling it that night.

So many times it just comes down to making 1 or 2 big plays. Childers rarely does that, but his pass to Brinkman crossing over the middle on third down with the defender wrapping him up and Brinkman blanketed was a thing of beauty. Best pass he’s ever made and in the biggest situation. Just Like when Santa hit Blake late in the game at Nebraska to get NIU the lead and victory.

It’s not just about completing passes, but also about WHEN you complete them. IMO, analogous to baseball, Childers is a .275 batter. Which is decent. But he bats about .200 with runners in scoring position and has a slugging percentage of .300.

Ding ding ding ding

exactly right.

(And Childers may not have been "let play," he may have on his own said, "the hell with it, I'm just going to play." I wish someone would straight out ask him which it was --- not that he might give a straight answer publicly.)

Also, the receivers stepped up -- finally.
