Non-Revenue Sports
There's a lot of money sloshing around the P5 already. It makes you wonder about priorities.

From USA Today:
Quote: ... USA TODAY Sports examined the total compensation each of the Power Five public schools reported paying head coaches in 23 sports other than football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball in 2013 and 2018. Including salaries, benefits and bonuses, the combined compensation for those coaches grew by about 43% over that time.

The rate of increase those schools reported for their football head coaches over that time was almost 51%. ...

►The average compensation in softball has increased by an average of almost 62% across the Power Five from 2013 to 2018, with 11 schools paying more than $400,000 and Oklahoma’s Patty Gasso totaling $1.22 million in salary, bonuses and benefitsfor 2018, when the Sooners advanced to the NCAA Women’s College World Series semifinals.

►Among the eight SEC schools that sponsor women's gymnastics, average coach compensation was $315,860 in 2018. For the other four leagues, the average was $196,068.

►In baseball, the average head coach compensation has increased from $430,228 to $651,445 between 2013 and 2018.

►At least 12 men’s golf coaches totaled more than $300,000 in compensation for 2018, 17 women’s soccer coaches and 10 men’s soccer coaches surpassed $250,000. Additionally, the average paid to wrestling coaches in the Power Five increased by 55% to $266,000. ...

If your TV contract brings in $50m/school/year then $500k on the softball coach is peanuts. There are limits to the SEC's ability to purchase titles in the major sports ... but being able to simply bury everybody else in non-revenue sports by doubling or tripling or quadrupling up on them in money is a very real competitive advantage.

With CFP autonomy from the NCAA any chance the schools had to reign things in flew out the window. UCONN is waving the white flag and we haven't even started paying the football players yet. Just wait until the haves use paying players and particularly the fan dollars from autographs and jerseys for compensation. Ready for the brave new world of the $100k/yr in merchandise sales alone star college QB? To be fair, I do think football players in college should be compensated above and beyond tuition, food, and board. However, I don't see any one ... literally any one ... in the P5 asking for collegiate athletics to pump the brakes and install some basic reforms. Todd Stansbury's sales pitch for the new Edge Building (the home of the GTAA) and various other new facilities with the $125m AI2020 campaign wasn't "this is what we need." His sales pitch was "this is the cost of admission at this level." Coach K may have bags of sweet Nike money, but even the Coach K entourage looks cheap when you start spending $500m on football stadiums every 2 decades in either renovations or expansions. Auburn spent $13.9m on a jumbotron. Wake Forest spent less than $30m, in 2018 inflation adjusted dollars, to build the entirety of Groves Stadium. So everything to the right of the 50 yard line at Wake Forest .... or the jumbotron at Auburn. Cost wise we're talking about a wash there. Start playing this kind of divide out into coaching salaries, coaching assistant pools, player compensation, facilities, nutrition, medical care, and so on ... and so on ...

Money can't buy you a title in collegiate athletics. But it can get you most of the way.

Pretty sure our women's lacrosse coach is making around $500,000 a year.

Yeah. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the men's lacrosse coach was making around $1 million per year.

For all those folks who keep singing the blues around here about the SEC and BIG being so far ahead of the ACC in tv revenue, there is just so much money that a school can spend on its football program. That extra twenty to thirty percent tv revenue gap that they have over the ACC usually translate to better paid coaches and facilities in the non rev sports. This article proves it.

I have been on these boards now for 17 or 18 years and during those years there have always been folks fretting over getting left behind financially in tv $$, going back to the original BE days. I seem to remember Miami and FSU competing just fine on the national level back in those days, just like Clemson and FSU today. Back in those days, juggernauts like Bama and LSU were largely irrelevant. Back in the day, when the ACC had the highest tv payouts, they were winning fewer fb championships than they are today having the lowest tv payouts of the P5. As long as you have great coaching and good facilities, you will be able to compete on the national level, even with a 20-30% tv revenue gap. But Im sure, in the next 20 years, there will still be folks whining about getting left behind in tv revenue while still being relevant and competing for and winning national championships

Things are changing. The belief that 'back in the day' still applies to today protects the ACC is ....interesting.

Hope it doesn't impact the ACC, but a $20 million deficit a year adds up over time. We are starting to see the changes.

Try not to change what I said.

'Back in the day, when the ACC had the highest tv payouts, they were winning fewer fb championships than they are today having the lowest tv payouts of the P5.'

That is a fact. No one said anything about it protecting the ACC. The ACC is winning more fb championships the last 5 years as the lowest paid P5 league, than it did when it was the highest paid P5 league. Not only that, but the ACC has had at least one team competing every year for a national championship under the CFP structure. What changes are we starting to see? Now Im not saying that there arent any changes but I dont see them at this moment. If you want to share what changes that you see then we can discuss it.

I understand why FSU fans might be more sensitive to the money issue than most. Since their most recent run in FB, the Noles have lost a DC (Pruitt) and an HC (Fisher) to the SEC - arguably all because they were offered salaries that FSU couldn't really afford to match (yes, I know, there were other issues in both cases).

Still, your point stands - there isn't MUCH evidence of money making a real difference. Maybe you could say that SEC men's basketball is on the rise? but that's probably the same as ACC football rising - more a function of deciding to do something about it rather than just having money to spend.

Just want to make a small correction for you HokieMark. FSU poached Jimbo from LSU for the same position, Dameyune Craig from Auburn for the same position, Eddie Gran from UT for the same position and Lawrence Dawsey from LSU for same position, Pruitt from Alabama (he was co-DC) for the DC position. If anything FSU has a recent history of poaching SEC coaches. Jimbo got an insane amount of money from aTm for a coach who was on the slide, yep even for an SEC coach and I don’t blame FSU for not matching the deal. FSU came out ahead.

I agree - FSU is doing just fine - just trying to point out why SOME Seminole fans may fret over the money situation. (A lot of it, IMO, is paying too much attention to SEC propaganda!)
