They did almost entirely individual drills. Very little in the way of 7 on 7 or team. I’m sure that was by design for the open practice. It was very hard to form any opinion based off what they did.

Childers was always first up with the 1’s, but from the very little team they did do, I still have every belief Bowers will be the guy. Bowers hit a couple deep balls (granted, both were blown coverages) and Childers threw a brutal pick.

I would expect both Love and Richie to play a lot at WR.

They invited everyone on the field after to talk with Hammock and the players. It was a nice touch.

RE: For those of you who were able to see practice today
They were in helmets only today, so although they did some situation stuff like two minute drill it wasn't full go. A few notes:

-I would say there were about 100 fans on hand. They let us go on the field before the practice and after, at which point the players sang us the fight song and Coach Hammock briefly addressed us. It was a friendly vibe.

-There was very little separation between Childers and Bowers that I could tell from this small sample. I thought they both looked good. Based on today, again a tiny sample, I would expect Childers to start vs. ISU.

-The number one O-line left to right was Marques Cox, Benn Olson, CJ Perez, Brayden Patton and Jordan Steckler. The twos were Isaac Hawn, Andrew Starr, Austin Warner, Nate Veloz and Nolan Potter.

-We were quite impressed with Michael Love, both as a receiver and punt returner. Fabian McCray and Mohamed Toure (I think it was him in the green jersey) did some nice things too. All three appear to have a chance to contribute this year.

-Jalen McKie and Devin Haney were the number one corners.

-Matt Ference was bombing punts, beautiful spirals. The freshmen punters had their ups and downs.

-When they attempted a field goal in the two minute drill it was John Richardson getting the call and he drilled it.

-Freshman running back Malik Winston moves well and looks like he could be good down the line.

-When asked who has surprised him in camp, Coach Hammock mentioned freshmen Michael Love on offense and Demond Taylor and James Ester on defense. He said they could contribute this year.

If Childers is as bad as everyone says on this board, and he beats out Bowers, that would be quite the negative statement on Bowers' ability.

Question for 7 and 1981: I was at the practice also, but do you think Bowers has a little more zip on the ball than the Childers or Thompson? Could be me seeing what I want to see. That being said, I also thought Childers threw with a little more authority than I've seen. Just curious.

Just my opinion, I thought they were about the same velocity wise. Bowers did a nice job of recognizing a couple of blown coverages and connecting with guys 25 or so yards downfield so those stood out.

7, I agree with your post. Too hard to evaluate qbs in this type of practice but you can see Bowers has a strong arm and accuracy. Even simple out patterns were pleasantly simple, strong passes.

On the interception Childers motioned and talked to the wr saying he ran the wrong route showing him what he should have done.

The players did also visit the crowd and shake hands and some even introduced themselves and answered some simple questions.

The TEs seem eager in this offense. A few plays they stretched the field and caught some deep passes.

Harbison stood out in punt blocking practice drills although it would be tough imagining him doing that much in season.

A player mentioned that they are ahead of schedule introducing the offense this year.

Another said that instead of them fitting into the offense the offense will fit them. This echos the Harbison article the other day where he bulked up last year to fit the system but was exhausted during the game.

Coach wants the players to be themselves and he will mold the game to fit their talents.

Only 4 green jerseys that I counted.

Jumping in here. Me and my bud didn't notice a separation between the 2 due to the short passing nature of the drills.

Thompson looked comparable as well.

Agreed. He hit a wide open a TE for a "TD". Reminded me of last year when a wr deep would be open but the qb couldn't get them the ball.

If Childers is as bad as everyone says on this board, and he beats out Bowers, that would be quite the negative statement on Bowers' ability.

If everyone evaluated Childers based on his practice play the unanimous opinion would be that he is very good. But people have formed opinions based on game play, which has been mediocre. If he beats out Bowers it will be because of one of two possibilities:

1) he has taken that jump his junior season and improved greatly, ala Harnish.

Or

2) he has fooled Hammock into thinking his game play will be as good as his practice play.

Was it just me or did it look like the defense was letting the offense go down the field when they did 11 on 11 at the end? The CBs weren’t even contesting routes.

I don’t know what the point of that would be, but that’s what it looked like to me.

Michael Love was a hugeee get for this past recruiting class. The tape doesn’t lie. He’s an electric player that should have a great career as a huskie. Just find ways to get him the ball.

Completely accurate. The D didn't make plays. They just stayed in base formation and didn't break on the ball or tackle.

My buddy and I speculated that the drill was to get the offense 2 minute drill down. Getting people to line up, call play, snap, pass move ball, do it again.

Both qbs had a chance to march down field.

I'm surprised to hear Taylor & Ester as our DLINE is supposed to be the strength of the team with SOLID vets returning.

Also, it appears Carey left a very good class of in coming FR for Hammock. Only question, Wasn't Live brought in as a DB?

Michael Love was a RB, switched to WR. I think his brother is an NFL player.

I think I saw 6 guys throwing. He blended in. Again this wasn't the type of practice for the QBs to show their stuff.

I get it as we all are. I will say this about Bowers. I was not disappointed. There have been other QBs who turned out not to be as good as advertised.
He has the arm strength as good as if not better than Childers.

One note from practice is that by passing in the middle of the field, which NIU almost refused to do these past couple of years, comes with risk. In practice one pass was deflected off a receivers hands and caught by the D. Mistakes happen but that was part of NIUs make-up. Reduce risk and play it safe. Frustrated so many fans but it won games and the MACC.

Now I expect this offense to be improved but at what risk. TBD.
