This isn’t a good place for partisan political discussions but in my view all news concerning the ACC and its forthcoming network is fair game. ESPN’s press release about the team running the ACCN easily qualifies. For goodness sake, the ACCN need women viewers.

I’m not going to censor myself to avoid offending some snowflake who considers something as mundane as women in the workplace offensive.

I use to be the entire IT department at a marketing and public affairs firm. That USA Today piece has all the hallmarks of what we would call "earned media." It's a piece more about promoting something than revealing something newsworthy. The core story is in fact barely if at all newsworthy. It has interview access to multiple high ranking people normally not easily touchable by the media. In other words, that news article was a freebie piece of "earned media" to promote the ACCN. Given that Dan wrote it, I'd guess it was likely a quid pro quo where USA Today got something juicier for the softball coverage. A cynical conjecture on my part, but cynicism in media is well warranted. And that's how it actually works a lot of the time. Anyway, earned media pieces are a blank canvas. How do YOU want to promote the ACCN? Of all the things they could have selected to discuss about the ACCN or its launch or the people behind it ... they chose to focus on the number of ovaries involved. That's a clear political message to a clearly defined political group. It's the exact same promotional tactics used to try (unsuccessfully) to pump up Ghostbusters 3. Imagine how much better that movie would have been if those writing and directing it were consumed with the quality of the product they were making instead of how many ovaries were involved in production. Similar gripe with this and the ACCN. If you're focusing on ovary counts of ESPN staffers behind the scenes at the ACCN ... what AREN'T you focusing on? Given that the ACC depends upon the financial success of the ACCN to stay together as a conference -- to remain a P5 even -- you think a little more urgency on quality and the basics and a lot less comparing genitals among ESPN employees is well warranted.

The gender of the people involved at ESPN behind the scenes is irrelevant. Only the carriage and the quality of the broadcast product and what is broadcast is relevant. It's not about women in the workplace. It's about meritocracy over genital ratios.

I'm for separation of politics and sports. It could be a puff piece about my favorite political candidate talking about my favorite pet issue and it would still be out of place on a sports network.

OK. Just so I understand the lay of the land on your platforms, I assume this asinine post is OK on your sports message boards???... https://csnbbs.com/thread-878748-post-16...id16182589 (referencing post #4 in this thread)

Is post #4 coming from the league office or its core media and/or business partners? Do you not see the huge difference between fans with their own views and agendas .... and stuff coming from the top? I'm hardly the only one wanting politics removed wholesale from sporting coverage, so I'm not sure why you're so puzzled by it. Fans can still show up to a NFL game wearing their whatever-candidate-2020 shirt and that's fine. They can take a knee during the anthem in the stands and that's fine. They can come home and go to their NFL team message boards and post that candidate x is the favored candidate of team y and that's fine. But don't use the sporting event as a platform to further a political agenda. And that responsibility rests entirely with the sporting league and whoever has licensed the broadcast rights to cover the events on TV. Notice the NFL -- over many painstaking weeks -- learned their lesson to not mix sporting events and political agendas. I don't want the coverage of Texas-Oklahoma to include a moment of silence and 15 minute diatribe on how we do or do not need gun control. I don't want to see a 15 minute diatribe on how black lives matter while a bunch of the richest people in world history take a knee during the anthem. Isn't Title IX enough political pandering for collegiate athletics already? And if you want to I'd be happy to dive deep into Title IX's flaws, starting with how many paraplegic competitive cheerleaders it has produced since the feminist overlords of Title IX didn't consider cheerleading to be a valid sport. (Sit back and let that wave of irony roll over you in full.)

I've largely avoided saying where I stand. I've merely stood up for separation of politics and sports when it comes to the leagues and their broadcasts.

As for where I stand? Post #4 was about as dumb as using an earned media post in USA Today on the ACCN to try to score gender equality political points instead of pump up your product and the schools that produce it.

How bout we move on from politics and political views. It never ends well.
As for me, I am interested in learning more about the ACCN and and what type of coin the ACC will generate with each subscriber.

Sounds like at least $1M for every 10 million subscribers? (probably goes up after a certain number)

Uconn would not deliver the NYC market. That is a myth. Rutgers does a good job of delivering the NYC market, but thats because the university is located in the NYC market, in neighboring NJ. Uconn is not and is at least 2 hours away from NYC.

Altice, which has 2.5 million customers in parts of NYC and LI has already signed with the ACC and did so very early on. We should have good coverage in NYC when all is said and done..

RE: ACC Network
Disney and Charter didn’t sign a multiyear extension before the deadline but the sides continue to talk to reach a deal. That suggests that both sides hope to avoid a blackout of ESPN and other Disney channels. Disney is looking to launch the ACC Network on Charter and is asking to raise ESPN’s carriage fee while also hoping to add to the amount of live games it can place on ESPN+, its sports streaming service, sources say.

Disney and Charter are still discussing a new multiyear carriage agreement, blowing past Friday’s 12:01 a.m. deadline, as the two sides try to reach a deal, according to people familiar with the matter. The sides are making progress on a deal and want to avoid a blackout of popular networks including ESPN, ABC and The Disney Channel, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private

The main sticking points between Charter and Disney have been issues related to ESPN, the most expensive network in the pay-TV bundle, said the people. One issue has been ESPN’s proposed pricing for the ACC Network, a new cable channel that will broadcast collegiate sports for teams in the conference, about 40 percent of Charter’s footprint overlaps with ACC schools. Another hurdle is how much flexibility Charter is willing to give ESPN+, Disney’s $4.99 per month streaming product. The two sides are discussing potentially including ESPN+ as a new network that Charter consumers can access on their set-top box, the people said.

Disney plans to bundle ESPN+ with Hulu and Disney+ when it launches in November and would like to strengthen the sports streaming service while not eroding the value of ESPN, which commands about $10 for every pay-TV subscriber. Typically, Disney will ask cable operators to distribute ESPN to at least 80 percent of their subscriber footprints, according to people familiar with the matter.

FSU AD David Coburn urges fans to switch providers as ACC Network launch nears
"If you are a customer of either Comcast Cable, DISH Network, Century Link or Frontier Communications, you will NOT have the ACC Network or ACC Network Extra and you will not be able to see the games at this time," Coburn said in his statement. "With the launch of the ACC Network just over two weeks away, we are now recommending that FSU fans who have Comcast, DISH Network, or Frontier Communications switch providers to ensure they do not miss any of the action."

Note who he did NOT include on his list, most prominently Charter-Spectrum. This suggests that by 8/22 or 8/29 at the latest that everyone of consequence other than Comcast, DISH and Frontier will be on the bus. If so, I think ACCN will be making an extremely successful start. I fear, though, that it may be more than a year before we get any financial numbers out of the ACC and even those net numbers will be incomplete because they only cover part of a fiscal year and will be lower than subsequent years because of start up costs and difficulties. At the moment, how well can you sell ads? You don’t know how many people will be watching. Besides, ACCN may be cutting deals where the rate starts low and then escalates over time. We just don’t know.

Well, I guess it's encouraging that they're asking a high price for it, and they're not giving it away. One fear I had was that they'd be so hell bent on carriage that they wouldn't be willing or able to charge much for it. I suppose that could still end up being the case. But if they eventually get everyone on board, even if it takes a year or two for a couple of them, it will be worth it if they're getting a good price for it.

Exclamation RE: ACC Network
I'm running a poll on cable providers and the ACC Network. If you haven't already taken it on my blog, please take it here - just 2 questions:
1) Who's your current TV provider?
2) Will you change in order to get ACCN?

Of course I'll post the results right here!

Here's the link to the poll:
Who's Your TV Provider, and Will You Change to get ACCN?

So far 50% say they'll change providers to get ACCN, 33% say they won't, and 17% are undecided.

So far (as of 10:55 AM EDT)
30% Already have ACCN
37% YES, willing to switch
10% Maybe willing to switch
22% NOT willing to switch

(What's wrong with you 22%?)

Also worth noting, among Comcast subscribers it's about 505/50, but among Charter/Spectrum subscribers over 90% say they'll switch providers if they don't get the ACCN.
