Not that his words will move the needle, but at least the local fish wrap seem to be finally jumping on the UC bandwagon with comments like these amongst other things:

"Bleacher Report’s preseason power rankings have the Bengals 32 of 32. I don’t think they’re that bad. My Redskins Who Suck clearly are worse. And there’s always the Jets. But, man, if I were you, I’d be buying Bearcats tickets."

There do seem to be more positive vibes from Cincinnati.com of late about the Bearcats. I applaud the effort but will remain cautiously optimistic that last year's #23 ranked team will get its fair share of coverage come September.

Small sample size, but I've spoken with more than one Bengals fan locally who is resigned to the belief that the franchise will wallow in mediocrity until the lease is up and then take their franchise to an NFL starved city elsewhere. I don't see that as a good scenario for our metro, but it is a plausible one.

I find it weird that the Bearcats could be ranked #23 and the Bengals could be #32 and the Bengals would still get more coverage.

Why...actually....do you think this is the case. You are making a correct assertion, but what circumstances do you think are responsible?

The Bearcat football program is not covered to the level of interest and Bearcat fans / alums are underserved as a result. However, the Bengals are rightfully covered more than the Bearcats. The bottom line is there is more interest in the Bengals. That said... UC could and should be covered more. Look at Pitt in Pittsburgh...the Steelers are number 1 there, but the Panthers always get nice coverage. There is plenty of room for more UC coverage. It's why Justin Williams has worked so well with The Athletic.

Bengals go from an above average coach to a complete unknown. They also don't have AJ Green at least for a while. There are scenarios where they are really bad.

They've already taken 2 big hits in arguably the area they could least afford it in the OL. Williams out for the year. Boling retires. Plus Price coming back from injury. Heck the Bengals already had to put out their seemingly annual late season mayday call out to Andre Smith before we even started camp. I don't care how many playmakers they have, if they can't block they are going to struggle big time.

FWIW, the reports on the new coaches seem positive, but of course, they haven't lost a game yet. The new coaches and the players deserve a shot to show what they can do, but I'm already preparing to root for losses in the likely event they get off to a slow start. And I may even start scouting Tua and Hebert whenever I can on tv.

For youse who track this stuff, single game tickets went on sale yesterday and it seems there are quite a few Ucla tickets left. Albeit, we are a few weeks out and most of the sections are low availability. Should we be worried? Seems insane to think we wouldn't have a sellout for that one. I really haven't even seen a single advertisement for it thus far, with the exception of the season ticket ads they have out.

We live in a pro sports town. The NFL, by a large, has a larger audience as college football outside of maybe 10-15 programs is mostly followed by alums and family of a university.

The second issue with UC FB is that the 70s, 80s and early 90s were so bad that we what I have in the past referred to a "black hole" in our fan base. Most guys in their 50s and 60s around here root for another school because UC football was so bad during those years. Had UC even had the modest level of success it had in the 1960s we probably could have kept a lot more of those fans and our fan base would be larger. UC has done a pretty good job securing a bigger fan base in the 35 and under group and I suspect it will get a lot better in the future as this audience matures and their purchasing power is greater.

Professional Football vs. College Football
Not everyone in greater Cincinnati went to UC or has close ties to UC.
Alumni from 70s/80s/90s by and large didn't really get into UC football.

Cincinnati sports reporting. UC not being in a "P5" conference. Although, when UC is in a "P5", they "don't belong". Bengals are "big time". At least, this is how these teams are treated. If UC keeps up what they are doing, they won't be ignored.

N.F.L.

Simple as that. I don't like the Bengals as a result of the corrupt stadium deal but I still watch because I like watching sports and is going to be a topic of conversation with people in public.

I think The Enquirer seems to be increasing UC football coverage so far this year. I just saw this story - Pat McAfee (former WVY and Indianapolis punter) will be going to Higher Ground after an invite from Luke Fickell.

My assertion is that more people watch because the game in the NFL is played at a higher level with better athletes.

This draws more eyes nationally and locally.

Locally, it also brings more $$$ into the county.

It also provides a path to the Super Bowl--one of the largest sports spectacles on the planet.

What do you think?

NFL is king. No other sports league comes close to dominating the news cycle and creating interest. Personally I care less about the NFL and the Bengals now than I ever did. My peak interest was in late 80’s and 1990’s. Once again in 2005 through 2009 was interesting.

The NFL I loved was Tecmo Super Bowl, NFL Street, NFL Primerime, sketchy TV feeds at sports bar, starter jackets, Logo Athletic hats, Boomer, Shake n Blake, Cowboys v 49ers, old school Super Bowl ads, and rules you could actually understand.

He actually fell in the canal in Broad Ripple. I've actually had some close calls with that canal myself.

With the exception of most communities in the South and Oklahoma/Texas, and in places like Columbus, Ann Arbor and Happy Valley, college football is mostly followed by alums/students and family of a particular university. The NFL is followed by everyone-- man, woman, young, old, white collar, blue collar, etc.

UC FB needs to tap more into the demographic that falls outside of our norm. We need more t-shirt fans-- people that didn't go to college or maybe who attended NKU, Thomas Moore, Miami, Wright State, etc. Many of them already follow UC hoops.

Correct - schools that don't have D1 football programs.

Can't say I ever liked Brent Irv Phyllis and Jimmy. I did not matter though, they were Nfc-cbs and I followed afc-nbc. I have to agree about Howard. Monday Night Football was never the same after Howard left. It was a huge void that OJ et al could not fill.

They've been trying to find another Howard Cosell for three decades.

Dennis Miller and Tony Kornheiser… uh, no.
