6. The Big 12 is prepared to expand with any combo of UCF/BYU/USF. ESPN has told the Big 12 expansion with UCF/BYU/USF is acceptable but P5 schools are preferred.

Did he forget that the media paid them contractually not to expand, and that both Fox and ESPN own the media rights together so one entity cannot be the boss here?

Apparently. The theory is that it is part of a new long term deal with ESPN that would be part of a GOR extension (the Dude claims the GOR is already signed). He claims to have FOIA docs that prove what he's saying. I will say---the GOR extension wouldnt really surprise me because I have been one that didnt think UT would want to move as long as they know Oklahoma is sticking around. 04-cheers

Definitely click bate. I had a good laugh reading the replies and Lambert's comments.

I could see those three, BYU, UCF, USF if Oklahoma and Texas leave. But if Texas stays at most one school.

BYU is the most ready, but the LDS issues make them more attractive as a Football only school -- the biggest hassle is the MBB tournament, they'd basically have to take Sunday off or Finish Saturday (doable) - not scheduling BYU MBB and WBB on Sunday during the regular season is not a big issue, you can still put KU games on Sunday. It's also a problem playing BYU in baseball and Softball as conference games are Fri-Sun sets. But the other sports nobody watches, so lack of Sunday for the Golf or Tennis conference tournament is frankly a who cares situation. But I can see a push for Football only.

So is it plausible in 2025? Sure. Is it likely in 2025? Not so much.

But at least Lambert has recognized no P12 school is realistic.

Why add 2 more when every few years you can use the threat of expansion to get a pay bump for waiving your pro rats clause

I wish there was a rule that all P5 conferences needed to have at least 12 teams.

I’ll believe it when a press conference is called and not a moment before.

Simply no way OU and UT give up their bargaining chips before the GOR by signing early instead of waiting till the 11th hour after the rest are forced to agree that UT alumni are allowed to ref every home game and Iowa State has to give OU it’s lunch money every day.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. From where this left off, expansion money was there with an extended deal and GoR. It’s not out there that a network may still be interested in expansion, even a little, but, that was never the core issue. You have to make this group approve unanimously on anything, and you have to make them extend the arrangement.

My question would be, how much longer does the Big XII have to extend the GoR for more money and possible expansion? It was obviously not going to be for the 7-8 years left on the current deal.

I can buy the signing a GOR extension part. I dont see expansion making much sense today when it didnt 2 season ago. Nothing has really changed since then.

ESPN could save more money if they can get the best AAC schools into the AAC, Big 12 and SEC. They could get BYU, Boise State and a couple of MWC schools. Those schools are getting better viewership than most of the ACC schools.

My question would be, how much longer does the Big XII have to extend the GoR for more money and possible expansion? It was obviously not going to be for the 7-8 years left on the current deal.

it is the 2018-19 fiscal year right now and will be the 2019-20 fiscal year at the end of the month for the Big 12 so that means there will be 6 years left on their deal

the Big 12 will distribute at least $45 million or so in 2024-25 (it will actually be paid in early 2026 though), but only about $26 million of that will come from the deals with Fox and ESPN that means there needs to not only be $26 million per new member paid by the media partners, but an additional $19 million per new member to be paid as well to make and new member "bring" a full payout amount

the current pro rata clauses covered media money only which is why expansion never worked even with new members not taking a full share

because there was no way to ever make up that $19 million dollar per year deficit between media money and the full distribution and there is little to suggest now that any of the available members will bring enough money to cover that deficit even with an extension of the current contract

and with the Big 10 contract expiring in 2022-23 and the PAC 12 expiring in 2023-24 there is little chance the Big 12 wants to expand and extend now when they do not know what the value of the contracts with those conferences will be so that the big 12 can then negotiate from there

there is little reason to believe that even if the Big 12 did want to extend their contract now that the big new additional money to make that happen would be based on adding two teams and the media companies paying on average about $42.5 million per new member to make that possible AND paying the other members of the Big 12 more money to make it happen

applicants for what?

are you trying to make the ridiculous "sports is advertising" argument

and yes there is more than media payouts....and new members contribute ZERO DOLLARS AND ZERO CENTS to any of that which is substantial money for the Big 12 and other P5 conferences

something or someone needs to make up for that lack of earning power for new members and the only ones to do that would be the media partners

The pro-rata (my spell check kept changing it to "rats" too) clause was eliminated in the last negotiation.
