Quick research. The following teams are accounted for on November 9:

> Purdue, Georgetown, Texas, Auburn, Oklahoma, Stanford, Texas Tech, Notre Dame, TCU, LSU, Kentucky, Virginia, Wisconsin, Duke, Michigan, UCLA, UNC, Kansas, Florida

The following are teams not accounted for who could hypothetically justify a "hype game" in my eyes:

> Houston, VCU, Florida State, Louisville, Syracuse, Baylor, Arizona, Villanova, Oregon, Tennessee, USC, Texas A&M, Indiana, Northwestern, Gonzaga

Northwestern releases its schedule in a couple of days so could be them. Timing also could just be coincidental. Don't think that would live up to the buildup.

More research:

St. Edward's is @ Rice on Oct 31, so the Nov 9 reference isn't to the home opener, unless exhibition doesn't count as an opener for hype purposes.

It's not K State or UNLV. Not Notre Dame.

Unrelated to the scheduling, but it looks like a lot of our 2020 PG attention has shifted to Sion James. He's out of Georgia and a bigger lead guard than others (6-4). Well-spoken kid who has made clear that academics are going to play a factor in his decision. In a recent interview the two schools he said that stood out are Yale (visited when they offered) and Tulane (wants to be a finance major which is something they offer...unlike Rice and Yale).

You can major in Econ and take multiple finance courses. At Rice, Finance is rolled under the Economics department. We have several outstanding profs with significant Wall Street experience.

Definitely not saying somebody with financial aspirations can't come to Rice. Just harkening back to the Miles Lester transfer saga. Problem is that the same thing can be said about Yale, which from what I've seen is very much in the pole position.

Probably our 2019-20 schedule if I had to guess?

I bet it’s a potential commit

I'm with Excited. Think it's probably about the schedule, though I'm hoping you're right.

A schedule announcement would be a ho-hum -- not be "a big announcement" -- in my book ... unless we're hosting Kentucky, Duke or such.

How about a Nov. 9-10 tournament at Rice including VCU, A&M-CC, and Wichita State?

I see what you did there. Add a football game against Tulsa.

Homecoming Weekend is October 31 - November 3.

I think he rather wittily meant homecoming for the recently departed, not the actual homecoming.

Yep. Thought there might have been some creative synchronicity involved. But ... no.

Evan Nelson, a 3-star PG from Arizona, has narrowed his final 3 to Rice, Harvard and UCSB. He led Salpointe Catholic to the state title as a junior and played in the backcourt there with sons of 2 University of Arizona coaches (including Sean Miller's kid). Nelson was MVP of the state tournament.

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Nelson is a teammate of Majok Deng, who spurned Rice, and a bunch of blue bloods, for Pepperdine earlier in the year. He's kind of an odd case. Really talented player who's smart and would definitely be a good cultural fit. But he's kind of in the mold of Olivari, Mullins, and Ako. Listed as a point guard, can play point guard, can definitely handle, good length at the position, etc. But not really a *true* point guard. His numbers for the last two years:

17-18: 24.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 3.5 apg, 4.2 tpg, 52/42/79
18-19: 19.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.2 apg, 2.2 tpg, 54/46/82

He's obviously improving as a handler, clear from the increase in assists and decrease in turnovers, but his high school production and tape makes it seem like he projects as a scorer rather than facilitator in college. Not that that's a bad thing. He would be a *massive* addition and would be a seriously good duo with Sheffield. But I'm wondering if the staff sees him as the PG of the future or whether we'd still target somebody else for that position.

Regardless, if we land him we'd have two spots open. I'd imagine one would have to be a big man, if not both. I think we're hot on the tail of Burke Smith who's a 6-11 academic big out of Virginia and is a lot like what Chrisler looked like in HS (i.e. can step out, looks decently mobile but a little awkward).

One final note, because this post has become way too long: Brandon Angel, who we offered fairly recently, cut his list to 4 and eliminated Rice. Finalists are Stanford, Cal, Wisconsin, and Utah.

Sion James committed to Tulane, so he's another PG off the board. Evan Nelson still hasn't committed but we're missing on about every one of our targets.

Burke Smith, who it seemed was a fairly decent sized target, committed to Boise State.

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Seems like either the name of this thread needs to be updated, or perhaps a new thread started for the 2020 recruits.

As a reminder, Rice should have 4 open scholarships for 2020, with Ako Adams, Tommy McCarthy, Robert Martin, and Tim Harrison graduating. That is 2 PG's, 1 SF, and 1 PF.

Rice currently has 1 commit - 6'5" SF Cameron Sheffield.

Rice has offers to the following player (according to verbal commits, 247sports, and me double-checking on twitter):
PG - 6'1" Justin Wright (offered 10/16/18)
PG - 6'1" Andre Henry (offered 7/17/19)
PG - 6'2" Evan Nelson (offered 6/15/18, trimmed his list to 3 schools including Rice on 8/14/19)

SG - 6'3" Jayden Stone (offered 7/5/18, his recruiting has blown up)
SG - 6'5" Ricky Council (offered 7/16/18)

SF - 6'6" Jackson Sivills (offered 7/23/18, Rice apparently saw him on 5/2/19)
SF - 6'6" Andrew Laczkowski (offered 9/6/19)

PF - 6'9" Yussif Basa-Ama (offered 7/28/19)
PF - 6'8" Matt Zona (offered 6/10/19, has some big offers)
PF - 6'9" Mylyjael Poteat (offered 7/15/19)
PF - 6'8" Reece Brown (offered 7/3/19, official visit supposedly scheduled for 9/27/19)

C - 7'0" Ryan Kalkbrenner (offered 3/8/19, his recruiting has blown up)
