RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
We have no more scholarships available. I also wonder if he might be turning pro, or just concentrating on competing for the Philippines in international competitions (they are in the Olympics in 2020 I believe). Last I read, he wasn't eligible to compete for them because he didn't get dual citizenship or something along those lines, but maybe if he took a year off from the NCAA and competed for that country in some tournaments, that might help him have a chance to make their Olympic roster?
Just speculating....

No announcements on his Twitter page, other than getting his release. And one of his profile pics is still of him in his Rice uniform. It's hard to say what his goals are, based on the message he released at the beginning of May.
I'm sure he'll figure it out.

Interesting note from a seminar yesterday: As of yesterday there were 1013 athletes in the Transfer Portal for D-1 Basketball out of a total of over 9,000 total athletes in the portal.
QMB to Vandy???

Wow.... over 10% of D-1 BB athletes looking to change ships. That is a staggering number.

Actually, the percentage is much higher. 351 Division I schools times 13 = 4613 (maximum possible).
Because of normal attrition (injuries, flunking out, quitting athletics, going pro), seniors won't comprise 25% of any roster. While some numbers are regained because of fifth-year seniors, let's say that only 15% are seniors (I think that's low). So 4613 x 0.15 = 692.
4613-692 = 3921
So, the percentage of transfers among those who have eligibility = 1013/3921 = 25.8%

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
A couple of other interesting notes....
1. Many D-1 coaches are taking the approach that the Transfer Portal is their place to recruit...many athletes are available...many are easy to scout (i.e. video is available)
2. Once an athlete enters the Portal, their scholarship can be withdrawn by their current school (obviously starting with the next semester)...there is a concern that many athletes enter the Portal without understanding that they are at risk.
3. There is a new summer tournament program where coaches can recommend that a high school/junior college player be allowed to attend one of a number of sanctioned summer tournaments... and be observed by coaches...think about that...(hypothetically...if a player commits to say UAB and you are the coach at La Tech for instance....recommend that he be "allowed" to attend the summer camp...and be observed by every P-5 coach with the hope that he will receive a "better" offer and not ultimately attend your conference opposition...that is clearly happening now)

I’m a little surprised coaches don’t want to rein this in to protect their recruiting efforts. Or maybe it’s easier and cheaper to let others recruit and then swoop in to pick off players?
I guess the next step is no sitting out upon transfer?

There's a lot going on here...if you receive a commitment, you definitely don't want your committed player to attend a sanctioned camp...if a player commits to your conference rival...your coach definitely will recommend the he attend a camp with the hope that he receives a "better" offer.

A few new (kind of) 2020 offers that I don't think have been noted:
PG Yassine Gharam (California)...offers from Yale, Air Force, Montana, etc.
SF Brandon Angel (California)...Offers from Cal, BU, UCSB, etc.
PF Burke Smith (Virginia)...Offers from Richmond, Northeastern, Columbia, JMU, etc.
PF Matt Zona (New Jersey)...Offers from Harvard, Yale, Rutgers, etc.
C Ryan Kalkbrenner (Missouri)...Offers from Stanford, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati

Some recruiting updates:
- Gharam (see post above) committed to Yale
- It looks like we're firmly out on Jahari Long (3* PG from Houston)
- Looks like we're firmly in the mix for Emory Lanier (3* PG from Tennessee). He just took a visit to BU and got an offer from Davidson

Roster is updated for 2019-20. I'm not sure when the last time we had a roster with 16 kids on it but we have 13 scholarship athletes (one who is redshirting) and then 3 walk-ons. We also have 6 guys 6-8 or taller, but that's a little misleading since one is the Texas Tech transfer, and three are incoming freshmen.

Osasere Ighodaro, who blew up recently, announced a final four of Texas, Stanford, Marquette, and somebody else. 3* PG Emory Lanier committed to Davidson. Still have some PG options on the board but seems like we missed out on our top two choices (Butler and Lanier).

2020 PG Jahari Long committed to Seton Hall. I don't get the sense that there was ever a real chance he was going to end up at Rice, but a talented local PG is nonetheless off the board.
New offer to 2020 PF Yussif Basa-Ama. Originally from Ghana, he has offers from Oklahoma, West Virginia, Harvard, Yale, and Columbia.

Probably our 2019-20 schedule if I had to guess?
I bet it’s a potential commit
I'm with Excited. Think it's probably about the schedule, though I'm hoping you're right.

Save the date post from the Men's Basketball Twitter account for November 9. Better be a pretty big name if they're going to hype the game.

Hopefully. Could also just be the home opener.
