The former Democratic congressman from Texas wrote in a Medium post that he was recently given documents showing that his paternal great-great-great grandfather listed two women, Rose and Eliza, as his possessions.

"That those enslaved Americans owned by my ancestors were denied their freedom, denied the ability to amass wealth, denied full civil rights in America after slavery also had long term repercussions for them and their descendants," O'Rourke wrote.

"I benefit from a system that my ancestors built to favor themselves at the expense of others," he added in the post, a defense of reparations.

"We all need to know our own story as it relates to the national story, much as I am learning mine. It is only then, I believe, that we can take the necessary steps to repair the damage done and stop visiting this injustice on the generations that follow ours."

O’Rourke said the benefits he has gotten from slavery and the “ensuing forms of institutionalized racism” give him a responsibility to change the country.

The White House hopeful outlined several of his policy promises, including addressing underfunding for minority-majority public schools, giving federal capital to minority- and women-owned businesses, universal health care, and criminal justice reform, in the context of addressing the legacy of slavery.

O’Rourke stressed that he will continue to support reparations for the descendants of slaves, “beginning with an important national conversation on slavery and racial injustice.”

The debate over reparations reentered mainstream political discourse after the House Judiciary Committee held the first hearing on the issue in a decade in June.

A bill sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) to form a commission to study whether black Americans should receive reparations for slavery has been gaining steam in the House, with many 2020 hopefuls endorsing the move.

O’Rourke has previously said that all Americans must understand the country's history before the U.S. can pursue cash reparations.

I lost all attention at reparations. There are other things, but reparations aren’t it.

Since my ancestors were not in the USA during slavery, do I have to pay for the reparations?

No one cares anymore about anything Robert Francis O’Rourke says or doesn’t say. Even less does anyone care what his ancestors did or didn’t do 160 years ago.

Is O’Rourke really going to drag his absurd “campaign” into 2020? How much of his own money is he willing to throw down the rathole?

If you are unwise enough to vote for these Demons the answer is YES. Everyone (except them of course) will pay for reparations. It's a stupid idea to begin with but we're dealing with "feelings, nothing more than feelings".

1/2-2/3rds of all European immigrants were indentured servants for the first 200 years. Term usually lasted 5-7 years. They got room and board but not wages. This practice did not end in the USA until 1917 or so. It probably goes on today in some manner with some Chinese and Indians.

The only people who should have had to paid any sort of reparations were people that owned slaves.

What about us mixed race people? Do we receive reparations or will it be on a pro-rated basis?

True. On virtually all of those ships there were Africans who became merchants as well. People tend to forget that the African slave trade wasn't adversarial. We are talking about good relationships with those African Kings/Tribes that went on for century after century after century.

I'm not going to bother to look but he had a schit-ton of money thrown at him from Holly-weird in his race to unseat that debil Cruz. Not entirely sure, but I think those funds are "his" to use on a campaign, no matter what the office.

So, He could just be wandering around, randomly jumping on peoples counter tops, flailing his arms around or eating sand on other peoples dime.

A much needed respite from the skateboarding or hacking computers.

Some of my ancestors owned slaves. I don't owe reparations any more than you do.
