I have a question. With sticker prices skyrocketing, and with more and more programs such as this, are we going to reach a point where only the poor to lower middle class, and on the other hand the extremely wealthy, and going to be able to obtain a university education? Are we going to Californicate university education?

In state tuition for UT is just over $11k per year.

FYI, as most of us know tuition isn't where they gouge the heck out of you..Its the housing and assortment of fees which is most cases equal to or greater than tuition.

The $11k includes fees. UT lists a similar number for on-campus board (~$11k per year). Is $11k for housing in Austin gouging? Heck, that is downright affordable!

This is not really the "real" number for UT education. I know this as I have billing statements to prove it!! Average cost of education at UT-Austin is greater than 25K (all in) and depending on housing (dorm type etc) can get close to 28K. Universities like to only mention tuition (which I believe may be set by the state..at least it used to be for all public universities in Texas) when touting the "affordability" of higher education but the real cost is rarely ever mentioned. The biggest driver to the more than 600% increase in cost of education over last 10-15 yrs is the availability of government backed loans. Likely most here are aware of this as well. We have eliminated university competition for students since our government is willing to back the loans to those that, in some cases, will never be able to pay back. But university says..who cares..we got our money an you got a basket weaving degree that is not worth the paper it is written on or the cost to acquire. Sorry, likely wrong place for this discussion. Also, have salaries, on average increased at the rate of 600%? I'm not all that old and my degree cost has paid for itself many times over. I suspect that is not the case for many these days. The university I attended now charges over 20 times what I paid not adjusted for inflation.

Also, note...two school teachers in the state of Texas make more than 65K so I guess their out!! The Rice Investment is one of the best aid packages I have seen and really is a game changer for middle class students and will be helpful on the athletic side as well (for the partial scholarship sports).

Yes on-campus is 11k for board. Perhaps you should look into how many that is relative to the full student body.

It is 'downright affordable', if not an amazing bargain. IIRC, they have facilities for only about 15% of the student population. So, I wouldnt race off to the 'wow what a bargain' school of thought at first blush.

A better use of the money is forgive the debt for students who actually graduate. Otherwise, a lot of waste and abuse will occur.

It was either 25% in the 1980s when I graduated high school (I think). I think it went from about 9-10% to 7% during my daughter's time in high school. The UT administrators have fought against that threshold for years without much success.

One of the best programs I have seen is the Income Share Agreement that Mitch Daniels (former Gov, Senator) put in place at Purdue. Basically, they'll cover tuition until you graduate, and the amount they expect you to pay back is based on your salary after graduation.

Interesting. We're checking out Purdue next month for my oldest daughter. This would be handy but it looks like it says it's a very limited program?

I mean, I’d love to see universities cost less - we are currently see school tuition increase at a sickening rate compared to wage increases. But when we’re looking at a single year at Rice costing more than what, more than two years at UT, I don’t really see why we’re complaining about UT’s costs. I mean, if we want to control public school tuition costs, cap tuition and raise taxes.

How about addressing the causes of spiraling tuition, instead of enabling them by transferring the revenue source from one middle class pocket to another?

I'd be open to plenty of options to address it - I just proposed the most direct method to address public university cost increases (we've generally seen state funding for public universities decrease across the board, shifting the burden directly to students). What sort of proposals are you thinking of? Would they address both public and private university tuition increases?

Administrative bloat is the primary cause of spiraling tuition, as universities do what any bureaucracy does with an unlimited revenue stream. Ready access to loan money means students can come up with the money to pay any amount of tuition, so tuition just keeps on rising. Limit loan amounts to a set amount of money per year and tuition will stop rising.

Private universities (excepting those with exceptional name cachet - i.e., the Ivies) are already facing the issue that for many or most of their undergraduate degree programs, the cost differential between them and public universities just isn't worth it. This is becoming increasingly true at Rice. At private universities, an increasing proportion of the students aren't paying sticker price. Capping loan amounts will effectively limit increases in actual cost even if the base price remains high.

The big difference re UT admittance from when I graduated from HS - effectively you sent in a postcard with your SAT score. Hit X score and as long as you were breathing most of the time, you were in.

How the heck does raising taxes control costs?

Seems like you just raised the cost to all taxpayers.

It's backed by an endowment.
According to the UT Web Site, they have an existing plan with $30k/$100k thresholds.
Exactly. The endowment is paying. I guess my issue is with the Chronicle headline rather than what UT is doing. It’s not “free”.
Would be interesting to understand where the new endowment funding came from.

My guess is that increased oil production doe to fracking has significantly enriched the endowment.

I have a question. With sticker prices skyrocketing, and with more and more programs such as this, are we going to reach a point where only the poor to lower middle class, and on the other hand the extremely wealthy, and going to be able to obtain a university education? Are we going to Californicate university education?

Yes, we will get there. For years the quoted cost of college (the face rate) has been increasing by well more than the inflation rate, while the average cost (tuition paid spread over the student body) has been going down. The result is as you describe above; a very low percentage now pay that full tuition rate, and what the heck, if someone will pop an extra million or so to get their kid into a desired school as a fake athlete, why not cut out the middle man and just charge that full amount (tuition plus the bribe amount) as the tuition? If you are not paying anything, then whether the face rate is $50,000.00 a year or $250,000 a year, you are not paying it, any way.

RE: OT: UT offers free tuition < $65k
My guess is that an in state student whose family makes less than 65k and is accepted is already getting a reasonable amount of scholarship. This certainly may deflect some funds from one person to another, but this isn't as big a deal as they're making it. Our deal, especially in that our trust is private and not backed by the PUF is similar in function, but far better in impact imo.

Another causation is the amount of cheap loans available. Think of what happened to real estate prices with cheap, easy credit. The education loan market has been a wide open floodgate for 40 years ----

How the heck does raising taxes control costs?

Seems like you just raised the cost to all taxpayers.

The caping tuition at public colleges controls costs...

Your statement clearly says "cap tuition and raise taxes". So you included raise taxes because ….?
