That's pretty shady. I could understand cancelling overbooked rooms as they happened, but 9 months later is absurd.

Man that is a crappy thing to do, and I wonder how much recourse any of the people actually have?

That's pathetic. Should honor the first ones who booked.

Hotel management messed up by not jacking up the rates to "home game weekend" rates before the fans booked their reservations. They need to own their mistake and honor the fans' reservations.

Agreed. That's some real BS.

I went to the Marriott site and they have rooms available Saturday (9/7) through Tuesday for $168/night/2 people. For 100 rooms that is $3800. Not worth the egg on their face and irate customers.

I am surprised they took reservations that far in advance. It's not like Clemson University just popped up last month. Clemson football is like summer season at the beach. Everything is going to be higher priced.

This occurred to me at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. I booked a room at a Courtyard in Tempe the earliest day out to book it, like 331 days out, for $59/night with no minimum. Verified it via phone about six months out, but before Thanksgiving, I got a call from the hotel saying the rate was going to be $159 and a two-night minimum. After a five minute conversation indicating my previous stays at the property in the previous 12 months and that I had another Marriott property booked in San Francisco for Saturday and Sunday* as I was going to the 49ers/Giants Wildcard game, I was able to get the rate back down to $79 and just one night.

*-I ended up canceling the San Francisco Marriott reservations and moved them to a Hyatt and IHG property as I received higher status from them over the year.

Exactly what is the point of a reservation? You put your CC guaranteeing the room and you are agreeing to be charged if you don't show up. My guess is the hotel assumes most people will not take action or will give in. I know I would be contacting every Better Business agency or AG to complain and made sure it was easily shared on Social Media of the behavior. Of course that would be after a loud conversation with reservations.

Charlotte hotels and restaurants got in trouble when they charged a specific gratuity fee for the MEAC tournament but never did this for the ACC tournament. It was a really bad look since the MEAC is made up HBUs. Sports radio in Raleigh actually asked the AG on the radio how this was legal since they never seen this fee when they covered the ACC tournament.

This happened to me before too. I booked as soon as the schedule was released (like within minutes) and a few weeks later received the same type of letter (not as bad as 9 months).

I don't even stay close to Clemson or Tallahassee due to motels jacking up the rates.

I used to bartend at a hotel in the South Park area of Charlotte. The hotel had to put a ban on employees asking for time off during MEAC Tournament weekend. Even told employees that doctor's notes wouldn't get them off the hook for calling in sick. And we weren't even within five miles of the venue like a lot of hotels. You couldn't find any managers there after 3 pm that week though.

So they know how to TAKE a reservation, they just don't know how to HOLD the reservation. And that's really the most important part.

Had no problem booking right in Clemson for the SC / Clemson game last year 3 months in advance. I was in Columbia for a football game a couple of weeks earlier and drove through Clemson on the way home to see where the hotel was and confirm my reservation. Don't remember the price for 1 night ($100.00 +), but I pay a lot more to stay in Columbia next to the campus and capitol on Gervis St. when I attend games there. See why they can get "Summer Beach Prices" though. The game was pushed back to a night game for TV and the hotels were full when I tried to get a second night before driving back north the next day. Lucky for me the people checking in behind me cancelled their second night stay and the hotel manager let me keep my room an extra night then. Worked out great since we didn't get back to the hotel from the game until 11PM. 04-cheers
