Like having multiple losing seasons in a row and beat TN and get a big contract extension?

Because it is basically a throw-away sport. It wasn't going to compete for conference title due to the previous existence of UConn in the conference and it was not going to be able to compete locally for talent against the SEC schools. School is required by law to have the team, so as long as no one was making any waves it was allowed to continue on in its current form.

It didn't have to be though. With UCONN in the conference and a number of former Pat Summit players looking to be coaches, we had a golden opportunity.

The women's basketball team just as the baseball team is a dead end job and no one wanting to build a career will take the career-killing job. They will not take the job unless they believe they have a chance of being successful and the school is going to go full in with the program.

How big an investment would it have taken to make Memphis women's basketball the second best program in the AAC? Not that much frankly.

Give a young woman coach with an NCAA championship ring her first D1 job. Hire a twilighting career coach to handle and teach the day to day of the job.

This is still a viable opportunity. There is no reason we shouldn't be dominating AAC women's ball with UCONN gone. It is a cheaper investment than baseball. It is a more visible investment than baseball. We live in a Tennessee where women's basketball is more viable than anywhere else in the country. There is a fanbase out there for women's basketball. There is talent out there. There is a conference title out there. There is an NCAA bid out there.

We are missing an easy win here. There is more upside potential to women's basketball than anything left. With football and basketball on track, this should be the next priority for the university. At the very least, roll the damn dice on a former UTK or UCONN player looking for their D1 debut.

Why? It’s fertile recruiting ground. Maybe we haven’t had the right coaches. We should be good in baseball and wbb.

They have made no effort at all. Wasn't the coach before McFerrin like the assistant AD's wife or some such nonsense who lost almost every game she ever coached...

Atleast nepotism was paying off in that case.

I had no idea she made that much, 240k base salary for a crappy coach on a womens basketball team.

What would you expect her to make?

We have a losing program, but we're not Mississippi Valley State.

75-100k base salary is what I would have guessed prior to reading that article.

I would expect her to make a salary commensurate to the net revenue the women's hoops program generates.

Fact is these coaches in the non-revenue sports, both men's and women's, make more money than the market would dictate they make.

So you expect our non-revenue coaches to pay the University to coach?

I think $240K is about 3 times what she is worth, if the market was dictating her pay.

My neighbor in Atoka is the goalie coach for the Memphis women's soccer team. The team generates no or almost no revenue - games are free to the public. He lives in a very nice house. Kids go to private school (my son played soccer with his son), wife doesn't have to work. I mean, good for him, he's a nice enough guy. But is he paid too much?
