So this week we received commitments from a CB who runs a 4.47 and a WR that runs sub 4.4 supposedly. I’ll take it!
Yeah this is amazing news. We have some good athletes committed.
I remember a sports reporter saying Goldsmith recruited for speed, and that seemed to be working.
Yes it did. Goldsmith was very open about his preference of speed over size, particularly on defense. Those guys were quick. Our best two defenses were during Hatfield's first two seasons.
No. Our best defense was the nationally ranked defense of 1974, with Cornelius Walker and Rose fronting the defensive line, and Pringle doing the punting.
1973 might have been a better defense than 1974. Pringle was a place kicker. Mike Landrum was the punter on both those teams. Landrum was actually SWC player of the week against Arkansas in 1973. His punts kept them pinned so far back that they ran up a bunch of yards moving the ball away from their goal line, but Rice won the game, 17-7 IIRC.

Ahh, yes! These are days you'll remember:
Arkansas had more plays (90-49), first downs (25-7), rushing yards (249-85) and passing yards (155-53). But the Owls won. :-)
(Note that the attendance was only 23,500, however. After the Houston Oilers started, our attendance declined for the non-UT/A&M/LSU games.)

Cole Latos commits - 6-5, 250 DE (for now, may project as an OL too) at Allen High School. He's also supposed to be a really good baseball player too.

Possible 1B/DH? Definitely has the power you’d like to see from 1B. I wonder if he’ll try to play, be allowed to play, or even wants to play both football and baseball?

Stanford had several players-- and very prominent ones at that-- play both football and baseball while Bloomgren was there. Their star RB, Gaffney, and tehir stud safety (who's name I can think of at the moment). In fact, the safety was drafted and went pro in baseball after his junior year, only to return to Stanford and the football team a year later.

I am guessing Ark won TOP.

There seems to be legitimate excitement in the program from the current crop of 2020 recruits. It gets you hyped up until you remember how often the stadium has felt like a mausoleum the past few years. Really hope there's a decent turnout for the first few games of the year and the performance isn't awful to the point where it feels like we have a few hundred people there.

This will be a hard sell. With the Texas, Baylor, and Wake Forest games on CBSSN, it is much easier to stay home and watch for signs of life from afar.

You're right. Attendance has been awful for several years. It feels empty.

Attendance has been awful for half a century, with just a few bright spots. But start winning, and it will start coming back. People won't come to see freshmen - they will come to winners.
That's simply not true. Attendance was fine in the 1970s. It dropped off precipitously thereafter.

And will come out to see them. But it will not happen in one season, especially if we tell the public Next year is when we will be better.
Just win.

The 60s-70s were the foundation for the problems we are trying to overcome. I don't know how packed HRS was in the early 70's - I was an out of town alumnus by then.
By then, we were into the second decade of losing seasons. UH was coming up, the Oilers and other pro sports were coming to town, and traffic was just starting to be a problem. We lost base every year after 1962 or so, IMO. I was a freshman in 1963, our last winning season until 2006. We stopped being Houston's team and its hottest ticket. And that slide continued for decades. It won't be made up quickly or easily. Arguing over when it started is as useful as arguing over which year was the last perfect year before global warming started.
To get back into the hearts of Houstonians, we need more than promises - we need results. The kind of results that are reported in the sports pages every weekend.
So, I wish Bloom was concentrating more on the here and now. Maybe in 5 years, I will be glad he took it slow. But for me, and IMO for Rice, nothing beats wins here and now. And nothing we do or can do will have more impact on attendance than wins here and now.
JMHO.

Attendance was good as long as we were playing TexasU or LSU. aTm brought good crowds when they were good, not so much when they weren't. It seems light years ago that we played aTm in Rice Stadium every year up until 1968. They were the Homecoming opponent every year, prompting a Campanile caption to the effect that it is not often that you get to be the visiting team at homecoming.

In those days, Rice was every year the visiting team at several of our opponents' Homecoming games, as well.

I believe that was 1992. Maybe you’re thinking of bowl teams?

FTR -- Years with winning Rice football records between 1963 (6-4) and 2006 (7-6):
1992 - (6-5)
1993 - (6-5)
1996 - (7-4)
1997 - (7-4)
2001 - (8-4)
(The Owls also had 5-5 and 5-5-1 records in 1970 and 1972, respectively)

The 6th win in 1992 was at HRS against Navy, complete with lightening bolts (seemed appropriate) and I believe, some game delay. We had a flight to catch that evening for a Thanksgiving trip to AZ, but I didn’t want to leave, recognizing a win would deliver something I hadn’t seen since matriculating in 1973, a winning season.
