It would give the Big East a new media market, and Vandy did win the College World Series. And Vanderbilt does have pretty good men's basketball.

Why would Vandy leave the SEC?

To de-emphasize football; Vandy doesn't act like that they have much in common with the rest of the SEC.

Yes, but Vanderbilt will never walk away from the SEC revenue stream, so it's a moot point.

Vanderbilt's time to de-emphasize football was in the 70's when Tulane left. The Commodore's decision to stay signaled that they were all in for SEC athletics. They are not going anywhere else.

I heard Carolina, duke and Kentucky are working the back channels to get in. Bama and UGA have already greased the palms with 2 million in private donations to fox sports 3. Should be an interesting off season.

Vandy just by sitting around and doing nothing...

2019 Home Games
Georgia
LSU
Missouri
Kentucky

4 guaranteed sellouts.

And then they get direct deposited like $40M on top of that.

Dumb thread, Vandy would never leave the SEC unless the rest of the SEC kicked them out. If that was the case, the ACC or Big 12 would pick up Vanderbilt or, worst case scenario, the AAC would.

For what reason would ANY conference turn away Vanderbilt? They are an incredible institution. Wake up to the reality that football is only one factor that P5 conferences care about. The academic snobs in the B1G would grab Vandy in a heartbeat just to get close to that medical school, which btw is in Nashville.

They are cashing a big check. Tell you what though Nashville is a different animal than it was even 10 years ago. I am doing multiple deals in Nashville over the past 18 months, can't find a southern accent with a search warrant. Actually Vandy is an associate member of the AAC, they play a couple of sports in the American.

Considering that Vandy hasn't really made an attempt to upgrade their aging football stadium, I'd say they are.

Why would any Vandy admin walk away from their historical opponents, multiple millions more in revenue, and a perfect geographical fit to be a misfit in a northeast and Midwest hoops league with a bunch of schools that really don’t have any history with them?

Winning answer.

Big Ten would take them, too. In a heartbeat.

What was the per-school conference revenue distribution at the time GT and Tulane left the SEC?

I don't know, but McDonald's hamburgers were 15 cents, fries were a dime, and the drink was a dime. And football tickets from that era were around $5 or $6 and there was only one game a week televised, so not very much at all.

BTW: The only thing that would make Vanderbilt consider leaving is if the SEC followed California's lead in permitting players to earn money from their likenesses, and even more to the point if there is ever some pay for play.

When those days come Vanderbilt won't be joining the Big 10 or the ACC. I would think they might help to form an all private conference that played football at a lower tier but played basketball and baseball in the upper tier. They might well be joined by Duke, Rice, Wake Forest, Virginia (even as a public), Miami, Pittsburgh, Boston College, and perhaps Northwestern and maybe the service academies.
