RE: Vols wanting to play football in LBMS?
Fulmer determined to act like this is the 1970s
About basketball...he says, I don’t know we’ll have to talk about that, instead of we would love to establish a fun series of games
Football, the idea of a Tennessee neutral site game in Memphis seems stale. They played Mississippi here in 1990? College football is in a different place now
Illinois playing Missouri in St.Louis or Oklahoma playing Texas in Dallas make some sense, they have always done that
Tennessee is 400 miles from Memphis.

UT has a huge presence in Memphis, the Liberty Bowl sure could use the money, they aren't really recruiting against us, maybe 1 or 2 players a year, it would make continuing the basketball series easier, we are still technically part of the great state of Tennessee even though the rest of the state's politicians in Nashville don't like to admit it, I don't see anything wrong with it.

You know, as well as I do, that the bball series will take a hiatus after these next 2 games. Penny is taking recruits from the elites and TN wont have a team like they had last year anytime soon. They have always ducked Memphis when the Tigers had the stronger program (70s & 80s) and will run away again after Hardaway kicks their tails the next 2 seasons. F'n joke of a basketball program w/ their 0 Final 4s.

Playing a game in Memphis not against Memphis is still stale
Because it does nothing to increase their profile
The Memphis utk base will not rally around them more because they play a random opponent here. The issue is not whether they have large numbers of alumni. It is whether okaying the game does anything for them that would offset losing a home game

Compare playing in LBMS and getting their cut of 65K tickets or playing in Neyland and getting their cut of 100K tickets. Its all about revenue.

That is true.
But
Memphis could be a top ten program this year. Barring a disaster, we should at worst be ranked in the top 25 by seasons end.
The Vols will continue their mediocre performances.
Why does Fulmer care? Because he understands that an entire generation of Memphis school kids are becoming Memphis football fans rather than UT football fans. If they don't bring UT in and whip our asses, there will be little to back up the idea UT is a better football team.
I hope the new AD is savvy enough to either not play here or do so when we will win.

Neutral site games are great for a city to host. I hope the city and the stadium can arrange it, or another neutral site game, in the city's best interest.

Prediction: If we beat Ole Miss soundly, you will not hear another word about this. If we lose to Ole Miss, Fulmer will be talking about this all fall.

So, they concede that Memphis is better than TN in football, by not wanting to play them.
I believe in playing better teams makes your players better people, not just players.
I'd love to see Memphis play TN.

A 6 win Tennessee team isn't getting more than 20K in Memphis against an FCS opponent. There's not that many Vols fans here, not much more than any other SEC school.
It's not the 90s anymore. Times have changed.

I agree. On the surface, I don't see how playing a game in Memphis against a neutral opponent helps them in any way. They get 100K for every game in Neyland. They would lose at least 40K in capacity alone by playing at the LBMS. They have a pretty large contingent of fans here, but it's not like they need to go on a roadshow to keep or grow that base. Their core is solid, even if they have stunk for a long time.

Won’t happen in next decade if not several more. Tigers could always say we can’t schedule around Heritage Classic and UT game also.

Tigers don't get a say do they? This would be between the city and UT since the city owns the LB.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention. Last season they hit 100,000 only once. Of their 7 home games, 3 didn't even draw 90,000.
And that's announced fans. I've seen pics of some of those crowds, like the Missouri game where it was really bad!!

Wow, not even 90k made it to the stadium? They are in shambles. I remember when we couldn't draw 90k. I am sure glad those days are over.
