Sure UConn wants to stay. It's the only way they can save fb. I've heard AAC has said, thanks - no thanks. As has CUSA and one more G5 they've approached.
I'm not sure that multi-conference thing still exists as a problem with the NCAA. There are certainly work-arounds though. At the very least, the NCAA will allow you to put a sport in another conference if your "home" conference does not offer the sport. That is what so many are already doing in various things. Heck, that's exactly what Navy does with football - they're in the Patriot (?) for all other sports. Look around the NCAA at other sports like lacrosse, rowing, etc. and you will see strange conference affiliations. I think we have Florida in the AAC for some sport not offered as an SEC sport. And that is where the football-only concept comes from.
But even greater, I think the NCAA has totally relaxed that rule in general. I think they had to for Notre Dame and their ACC association.

RE: What should the AAC do with membership?
WTH would we want UConn as football only school? The only real thing they brought to the table was their 4 national championships in basketball. TV market overrated as B10 found out with Rutgers. Many NE cable providers stopped carrying the B10 network. B10 discounted it a bunch just to get it back on. They wish they could unhitch Rutgers from the B10 wagon train.

I like Aresco's response. I like it a lot. He sounds like a P5 commissioner.

Yup. and to be honest, UCONN owns the New York market in the same way Austin Peay owns the Nashville network. Not at all.

I would say that since we hardly have any natural rivals in this conference, go to 16 teams and then the only real time that the football teams play someone from the other division is once a year and then the championship game (Like the way baseball used to be before inter league play). That would cut down on a lot of travel. But I am clueless how a 16 league conference would effect basketball and all the Olympic sports.
I guess my idea is let the two divisions almost be two separate conferences that only play against one another for championship games (or in conference tournaments).
We were thinking along the same lines.
With the Navy and the West thing, at this point I say "You're in the East, deal with it". It makes no sense from a conference standpoint to have them in the West. I think some of their desire was when we were going to have SDSU in as a member. Some of their explanation, I vaguely recall, was recruiting base. But, geez, you're Navy. If any of us in the AAC are national recruiters, it's those guys. I checked their current roster and they have 10 guys from TX out of 109. It's their 3rd largest state. But they also have 6 from NC, 7 from PA, and 8 from NJ. So it's not like them being in the West is making their roster.
I'd call their bluff. If they decide to leave, you add Nevada in the West and shift Tulsa east.
Their reason was not to recruit football players but to recruit to the Navy. At least that is the way I remember it when they joined. I could be wrong.

RE: What should the AAC do with membership?
No that's entirely correct. It's for the Naval Academy as a whole, but of course football is included in that.
They requested, the league agreed.

Football, I think.
And one or two other SEC institutions.
Futbol, maybe to be more correct.

Yeah, but still - you're Navy. You have visibility in every state - regardless. One of the few universities with national tv advertising. I don't think playing UCF and USF, instead of Houston and SMU is going to kill your enrollment.

That's not what Navy said at the time, which was May of 2014. Navy wanted one game in Texas each year to recruit football players. https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...-divisions
"Texas is our No. 1 state for players," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo told the Advocate.com. "So we'd prefer to play at either Houston or SMU every year."

RE: What should the AAC do with membership?
Before Navy football joined the AAC, their scheduling MO was scheduling a ton of home-and-homes with sun belt (region) programs in C-USA, Sun Belt, and some of our own.
The West fits that bill bigly.

The focus of standing pat or adding another school, rightfully, is on football.
As a basketball fan, I hope the AAC considers the merits of adding a basketball only school enhancing value like WSU.
VCU seems the best fit, subject to number crunching.

That would present a real complication if an all-sports school was eventually added. Better to add the FB school first & then a BB school if needed. VCU might be a good choice at that time.
