I just wanted to jump in here and add that Texans' infatuation with service roads is surprisingly one of my favorite things about Texas. I know that might sound weird but once you get used to them, I really think it is a superb way to design a highway. Seriously.

Also, the prettiest college town I've ever been to (not counting Boone) is Freiburg-im Breisgau, Baden-Wuttenburg in Germany's Black Forest.

"Ragging" on your posts? I DISAGREED with what you said...lol. Do you honestly not know the difference between disagreeing with someone and personal attacks/insults? In fact, you later said the stuff you wrote about San Marcos wasn't meant to be taken literally to begin with, which means your view of San Marcos and mine are actually more similar than they are different. So what then was the point of even arguing with me to begin with?

And btw, if I couldn't stand the heat, I wouldn't have come to another conference's board, disagreed with a couple of people on what they said, and still be here even now after repeated insults about the school I got a degree from and me personally.

As to any criticism of your school, based upon my experience with "the product", it wasn't relevant to a thread about the most beautiful college towns, so I chose to not even go there. And I still won't because I'm not a mud slinger.

You do you and support Texas State, and I'll do me and support UTSA. At least you're loyal to your school; that's always a good thing. But why not do so with decorum? Seriously, no need to jump so quickly to personal attacks and insults every time someone from a rival school disagrees with you, especially if they've done nothing to warrant it. We were in the same conference for about two decades, and it sometimes shows in the conversations our fans have with yours, and it certainly came out from your end in this one. Really no need though.

I agree that the city I live in is beautiful (voted #1 destination in the world 3 straight years now). However, it’s not what I would call a college town. You rarely see many attending sporting events and the main draw for students is that CofC is downtown and close to the beach. I’d say MUSC is a bigger and more appealing university than any of the 3 you mentioned (and not what you’d call a traditional college).

Nonetheless, Charleston is an amazing and wonderful city to raise my kids and have a career. Not taking anything away from it or what you said, but it’s really not a college town.

Not an expert, but lived there for 4 years and really loved the place.

I agree. I thought this was about "college towns." I spent six months in Meridian working on a project and I can tell you that it is not a college town. They have a community college that looks like a high school. A nice little city, people are friendly, with a regional mall and a naval air station just outside of the city limits, but not much going on there.

Monroe recently was given the title "The Most Poverty-Stricken City" in Louisiana, according to a recent study by 24/7 Wall Street. Midland, besides not being a college town, is hot, flat and basically a desert. I can't see it in the same category as San Marvelous in any manner, other than being located in the state of Texas.

Agree...stay in Myrtle Beach

Troy has branches in both Ft. Walton Bch. and Eglin AFB. Both are at the most beautiful beaches one could imagine.

You obviously don't live there, and haven't visited in a long time. Maybe Charleston isn't your thing, but it is not overrated. Also, Charleston metro is pretty spread out. It basically includes everything up to Monks Corner. When going from one end to another in Charleston is about 45 minutes away. The biggest problem is traffic and lack of infrastructure. The area is growing too fast and people still try to pretend its 1990 and don't want to acknowledge the growth.

I've been thinking the same thing since this thread began. To be called a college town, I think the college must be the primary economic engine of the town. Charleston is not a college town, and I dont think Madison is either. Madison (like Austin) is a government town that also has a large university. I grew up in Greensboro NC with two DI universities and three smaller colleges, plus two other D1 school in neighboring cities, effectively making it home to 7 colleges but I wouldn't call it a college town.

Boone and Boulder are college towns. So are Statesboro, San Marcos, Troy, Chapel Hill, Gainesville, Ithaca, Athens (GA and OH), and Oxford (MS, OH, and UK). Annapolis probably should be called a college town but its debatable.

The prettiest location for a college in the USA is Pepperdine in the land of fruits and nuts, but its questionable if Malibu should be called a college town, so I'm going with San Luis Obispo, home of Cal Poly, as the prettiest college town I've ever been to in the States.

I agree that I wouldn’t call it a college town. But, comparing Conway or Myrtle Beach to Charleston is a massive mismatch.

Boone is not a beautiful town. The setting and surroundings are stellar, the campus is very pretty, but the town is far from beautiful.

A college town/city, is a place that grew because of the college and the college then grew because of the city.

Austin grew because of the tech industry, not because UT is there. Austin started to boom in the late 70's to 80's when IBM and Motorola settled in, then Dell, etc., and Lockheed was there at one time. UT has been there since 1881 but the city only went zonkers almost 100 years later. We were there for that outburst of growth.

It may have a major University but it's not a "college town" by my definition.
