Who are the 5 Best Head Basketball Coaches To ever coach at Your School?
These are the 5 greatest Charlotte Basketball Coaches and the order I would rate them:

1. Lee Rose (Final 4)
2. Jeff Mullins (Revived a dying team).
3. Bobby Lutz (winningest coach)
4. Bill Foster (recruited Cornbread Maxwell greatest player to wear our green)
5. Melvin Watkins (great Charlotte player & coach)

RE: Who are the 5 Best Head Basketball Coaches To ever coach at Your School?
Western has been blessed with good coaches so I cant limited it to 5... 2 in the basketball Hall of Fame

E.A. Diddle 71.5 Winning % and the all time winningest coach in D1 when he retired. Only five losing seasons in 42 years and he's a member of The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. one of the first coaches (some say first) to bring the fast break to college basketball.

John Oldham only coached 7 years at Western before he retired (long time Mr Diddle asst coach) won 146 games 78% and ranked 5 out of 7 years...3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th, 15th with 1 F4

3rd is tricky for me and its between Willard and Felton but I will go with

Ralph Willard won 81 games in 4 years 66% and two ranked teams and 2 NCAA Tourney bids. Sweet 16, round of 32

Dennis Felton coached 5 years but had a total rebuild job. Felton still won 100 games at 65% along with 3, back to back to back, season and tourney championships. Failed to win in the tourney his last 2 teams was ranked 17th and 19th and had a 1st team All American on them...but he got hurt and never fully recovered his Jr and Sr years.

5th would be between Clem Haskins and Gene Keady

Keady won 67% of his games in his 2 seasons at Western and a NCAA bid. Should have won the 1st round game vs Virgina Tech (played at Diddle arena) Western had a huge lead and got beat.

Clem was a first time head coach and had to learn on the job. His 2nd season Western moved from the OVC to the SBC a HUGE step up in talented schools. The 1st year SBC had 2 NCAA bids, 2nd 3, 3rd 3 and 4th year Western was one of the 4 schools to get a NCAA Bid. Western's 5th season (Clem's 6th and last) 2 NCAA bids with Western winning the conf. His recruiting was as good if not better than Stansbury's. Won 58% of his games over 6 seasons with 2 NCAA Bids. Lost to UAB in one and Beat Neb. in the other before getting hosed vs uk in a 2nd round 64-71 loss. Clem wanted to stay at Western but Western refused a 5 year contract..he would have retired at Western. So he took the Minn. job

So that's 6

Western has had 13 head coaches (14th very first season only played 4 games) and every one of them has made the NCAA Tourney. With the exception of Coach Stansbury

Harper 2 in 4 1/3 seasons

Ken McDonald 1 in 3 2/3 seasons (fired)

Horn 1 in 5 seasons

Felton 3 in 5 seasons..back to back to back

Matt Kilcullen 1 in 4 seasons (fired)

Ralph Willard 2 in 4 seasons

Murray Arnold 1 in 4 seasons (fired)

Clem 2 in 6 seasons

Keady 1 in 2 seasons

Jim Richards 2 in 7 seasons (retired)

John Oldham 4 in 7 seasons (retired)

Mr Diddle 3 in 42 seasons sweet 16 in all. Most of his years the NIT was the National Tourney ranked in top 20 nine of the 12 years that the AP had a poll (retired)

UNCC was the tourney Cinderella 2 years before Bird and his Indiana St team. I loved watching that team play...blue collar team . If you saw Cornbread Maxwell on the play ground you would never think he was the player he was. Heart Breaking lost to Marquette who had a couple great players in Jerome Whitehead and Butch Lee

RE: Who are the 5 Best Head Basketball Coaches To ever coach at Your School?
Charlotte:

1. Lee Rose
2. Jeff Mullins
3. Melvin Watkins (even though he wasn't with us as a coach for too long, he probably was the third best coach we've had)
4. Bobby Lutz
5. Bill Foster

W&M:

1. Bernard Wilson
2. Bruce Parkhill
3. Tony Shaver
4. George Balanis
5. Nobody? Barry Parkhill or Charlie Woollum, I guess?

Georgetown:

1. John Thompson, Jr.
2. John Thomspon, III
3. Elmer Ripley
4. Tommy O'Keefe
5. Patrick Ewing (I'm optimistic, so I'm including him and think he'll end up higher than this)

Ugh...Barbee.

1) Gene Bartow
2) Mike Anderson
3) Mike Davis
4) Jerod Haase
5) Rob Ehsan

I only had to leave 1 person off for all of UAB's history (Murray Bartow). Feels weird to have so few coaches on the list, even if the program is only 40 years old.

For ODU (we've only had 8)

1. Paul Webb (Took us to DI. 3 NCAA and 5 NIT appearances)
2. Blaine Taylor (Multiple Conference titles and NCAA T Appearances. ODU was a consistent Top 50 team towards the end of his tenure)
3. Sonny Allen (Multiple DII Champsionship appearances and the 1975 DII Title)
4. Oliver Purnell (Only with us for 3 years, with one NCAA and 2 NIT appearances)
5. Jeff Capel (Two NCAA appearances and likely our most famous win, the triple-OT win over Villanova in 1995. Didn't do much after the 1997 CAA title. He may be replaced by Jeff Jones should Jones get another title and/or NCAAT win soon).

UTSA Men's Basketball has had only 38 seasons so far, and only 6 coaches. Our best, by far, has been our current coach, Steve Henson.

We've had 9 women's coaches during that span, and the only one I've really liked was Rae Rippetoe-Blair, who had a 216-173 record in her 12 years at the helm. She resigned to help care for her husband who had Alzheimers, and sadly died a year later in a motorcycle accident at the age of 52.

Wow, I'm not sure if that's possible for Rice. They've only had one coach since the 1950's with a winning record and that was way back from 1949-59.

I guess Willis Wilson (now the head coach at TAMU-CC), Scott Thompson (went to Wichita State from Rice) and Mike Schuler (was terrible at Rice but did sign Ricky Pierce and became a pretty good NBA head coach) are top 3? Don Knodel was the last coach to bring them to the NCAA's so I guess he's #4. And then even though some people don't like him because he was only at Rice for two years, I still think Mike Rhoades (now at VCU) was a pretty good coach who would have stayed longer had VCU not been available.

It's pretty slim pickings though.

1 Cam Henderson All your guys do **** this guy invented. Winner. From Wikipedia:
"Eli Camden Henderson (February 5, 1890 – May 3, 1956) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Muskingum College (1920–1922), Davis & Elkins College (1923–1934), and Marshall University (1935–1949), compiling a career college football record of 161–91–13. Henderson was also the head basketball coach at Muskingum (1920–1923), Davis & Elkins (1923–1935), and Marshall (1935–1955), tallying a career college basketball mark of 621–234. As a coach in basketball, he originated the fast break and the 2–3 zone defense, hallmarks of the modern game."

2 D'antoni furthest run in the tourney, conference championship, Many final and semi final appearances, many winning seasons in few short years.

3 Rick Huckabay from Wiki: "In 1983 he was hired at Marshall, where he compiled a 129–59 record, including three appearances in the NCAA tournament and one in the NIT before resigning in 1989 amid an investigation into recruiting."

4 Billy Donavon famed Florida coach wasn't here long enough to really set the place on fire, and stole Jason Williams from us when he left.

5 Dana Altman another short-timer that I feel could have gone far with the Herd had he stuck around.

Honorable Mention: Ron Jirsa. MFer didn't do a GD thing except beat WVU every time we played them. That was enough.

WKU hasn't made the tournament yet because CUSA is a step up in competition, despite what the polls/RPI say. I don't think Harper or Stans have one yet in CUSA, do they? We are a very competitive league and cannibalize our own. Some of your other leagues could be man-handled by a dominant team. CUSA just doesn't let it happen anymore for more than a year or two for any team.

so

1. Larry Eustachy
2. M.K. Turk
3. James Green
4. Lee Floyd
5. Herschel Bobo

I mean I'll give Doc credit for salvaging our situtation, but 56-93 definitely doesn't deserve top 5.
