Joenovak, I actually think Hankerson may have gotten screwed and not received a scholly this year. I don’t know where they came up with this one for Beane? If Hankerson got one

RE: 2019-20 MAC Basketball Transfers (Updated)
I am reading the article and I believe they were talking about Jimmy not qualifying. At the same time Darius might not have been on scholarship due to his dad working at SIU. A lot of schools provide free tuition and fees to children of employees. Hope either way that is the case and he is eligible to play with Geno.

Sadly, it looks like you are correct.

I 100% believe if this isn’t a great year for Monty then he would be let go so I can’t believe he would use a scholly on a kid who has to sit out. You only get 13 scholarships each year. If you have to sit out and you are on scholarship that still counts against the 13 you get.

Can’t imagine that.
Thought he showed a lot of poise and basketball IQ as a true freshman on a team lacking both.

These 12 are on scholarship unless something happened. New guys: Tyler Cochran, Keenon Cole, Nathan Scott, Chris Johnson then these returning players: German, Hayes, Daow, McCarty, James, Lee, Mateen, Travis. That is 12-guys. Hankerson and Beane would be? marks. Only one of them can be on a athletic scholarship this 2019-20 season.

What if the rumor of his dad coming to coach at NIU are true? NIU has a policy of 50% off tuition for children of faculty and staff who have worked at either NIU or other public Illinois Universities for 7 years. Kid would save some significant money and still get to be on the team even if all the scholarships are taken.

Sure! I never said he can’t be paying his own way. 50% off tuition only? Room/board/books?

In reality, all they'd have to do is give him 50% off his tuition and give the other 50% as part of his dad's yearly salary. It wouldn't be that hard to do, even for cash strapped NIU.

Big red, I have no idea what you are trying to say? If Beane was able to get half of his tuition paid for due to his dad being employed at NIU then he would still need to pay the other half of tuition, plus room and board and books correct? How could that be added to his dads salary? Monty has a certain amount for his coaches I guess he can split that up however he wants. However it is done it would still be the kid paying his own way or being on scholarship

in theory you could just pay him whatever the remainder of the scholarship cost was, but i get the feeling that is very illegal lol

Is it illegal? Seems like the dad could negotiate a salary and, in those negotiations, the salary could go up in a way to cover the remaining yearly tuition. That would be less than 10k per season. A quick google search tells me a typical, in-state tuition at NIU is about 14k. 50% of that would be around 7k, and having no real idea of what an assistant makes there, I can't see that a additional 7k would be that egregious.

So, you think them getting him as a transfer and hiring his dad as assistant coach (presumably, I don't recall seeing it confirmed anywhere) is just a coincidence and had zero effect on getting Beane? There's a ton of grey area here and if you wanted to connect dots you want to connect, you could easily say they're already paying the kids family to have him go to NIU just by hiring his dad (which obviously SIU did as well just like a number of other schools).
How is that not illegal too?

I'm sure they would have run it past the compliance people to make sure that it wasn't a problem.

No kidding. But the fact of the matter is, it's not. Why? How is it different? Or is it just one of those hypocritical situations in NCAA where you can legally pay an athlete's family in exchange for that athlete to attend your school?
You don't think if Brad Underwood really wanted Beane he couldn't have offered his dad more money to join his staff and, in turn, get Darius on the Illini?

Because you’re circumventing scholarship limits and paying the parent for the kid to go to the school.
No way it would be legal.

NIU Update:
NIU has added two offers to the HS class of 2020.
An offer has been made to PG Marcus Watson, JR. Watson, Jr. is a 5'10", 2* recruit from Morgan Park HS. I believe he also plays for Mac Irvin Fire.
The other offer is to SF Jace Howard. Howard is a 6'7", 3* recruit, from University School of Nova Southeastern University in Hollywood, FL. He also plays for Mac Irvin Fire and I'm about 99.9% sure he's Juwan Howard's son.
