A little out there, yes. But we can’t give away a scholarship. We have also lost out to some schools that we should not have. So yes, we do have some problems.

Just bc we have a scholarship doesnt mean we are forced to use it.

I’d be willing to bet that 70 percent of division 1 men’s basketball teams don’t use all 13 scholarships.

I expected a conference champ to do a little better than we did. Oliver and the high school PG should be nice additions. We'll see as about the others.

I'm not worried about the recruiting as much as the attrition an the inability to keep our players from one year to the next.

This would make sense if we weren’t trying to recruit anyone. But we are.

Edit: I realize that you usually make idiotic comments like this in order to argue and then disappear as soon as you have no logic to back it up.

I think people think recruiting is static. Just because we offered a scholarship at one point doesnt mean it is promised throughout the whole season. Some of the offers are backup options in case others move on. Offers are also pulled. When you hear we offered someone that doesnt mean that were a priority.

This class seems to be pretty solid. I dont like it as much as last years but that was as good of a class as we've had in some time. Not sure what the “problems” are

This class seems to be pretty solid. I dont like it as much as last years but that was as good of a class as we've had in some time. Not sure what the “problems” are

* Depth at the 5 position.
* Defending guys like Bassey at the 5 position.
* Getting offense at the 5 position.
* Depth at the 4 position (if Kalu isn't moved there).
* Getting offense at the 4 position (if Kalu isn't moved there).

Additionally, all newcomers are big question marks as far as how much they will even play with Jeff as the coach. Till they show they can defend to his liking they will face an uphill battle to get playing time. Highly touted recruits - at least as far as the posters on this board are concerned - such as Kah, Hueitt, and Reece (for example) saw very little action their first season with the team. Hopefully that won't be an issue for the new point guards as they will be having to fill approximately 38 minutes of playing time with the departure of Caver.

Kalu should be playing the 4 this year. If Reece picks up the defense, scoring production at the 4 won't be an issue at all.

But why wouldn't you want too, it's free lottery ticket. It's not like you have to bring the guy back the next year, and if you are worried about hurting feelings just sign a grad transfer who will be gone anyway. There are unexpected finds all the time. Sitting on it is about the worst of all the options.

Bc sometimes you have guys like Oliver fall into your lap. We do not typically pull scholarships since it's a bad look unless the players are getting into legal trouble/failing drug tests. If you take a borderline kid or go below your standards, you are stuck with a sholly you didn't really need. You also have more scholarships available than you have spots for playing time for the most part.

So taking a developmental kid would be fine but taking on players just to fill them up isnt' really smart.

It depends on what they think they can get from Reece this year. Carver, Dickins, Ekizpe, Karaiskos, and Reece is not bad depth at the 4/5 spots.

From last year they lost 9 mins from Robinson and a handful of BJ at the 4 minutes. This year, Dickens/Ezikpe will see increased minutes over the 25 total they played last year. Reece will hopefully add some minutes. Karaiskos will likely play a handful of minutes. Green/Oliver/Godwin will be able to play some minutes at the 4 when they want to go small.

It seems like a wasted bite at the apple to me to just sit on it. Really the only value in keeping it open is a mid season transfer and those are pretty rare, or that you even want to waste about a quarter to third of a potiental season with them sitting out about 8 or 10 games.

Players could always be offered with the understanding it's a one year deal. Players could be told they won't play much and encouraged to leave, many leave anyway with all the transfers today. Grad transfer option etc. I'd rather have something in that spot that has a chance to surprise than it just collected dust as an empty chair.

Mid season transfers are not very rare anymore. There were over 100 of them last year.

This class seems to be pretty solid. I dont like it as much as last years but that was as good of a class as we've had in some time. Not sure what the “problems” are

* Depth at the 5 position.

Reece hasn't shown enough to be a player they can count on this season to play significant minutes and be successful. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Karaiskos may end up like the Greek Forward (Pilavious) they brought in prior to last year - i.e. on the bench and nowhere to be seen as far as meaningful playing time. At this point no one knows what to expect from him as far as being a contributor this season. He may play the role that Vassor did a few years ago - emergency replacement center.

Dickens needs more bulk and muscle to hold his ground in the low post against guys like Bassey in order to be successful. Either that or he needs to learn to keep some spacing off of his man so that he can go up with him to challenge his shot better than he has shown the ability to do. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Kalu needs to be a 4 guy and play the 5 primarily when Jeff wants to play a smaller lineup. If Dickens doesn't add strength and weight then he too is more suited for a smaller lineup center.

Carver is a good defensive 4 player but a liability on the other end of the court.

And they made it work last year. This year they lose 9 mins per game from Robinson and add Karaiskos. (Not saying they will be as good because Stith/Caver are hard to replace).

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2019
The best thing about freshmen is they become Sophomores. Expect a lot of improvement from Wade,Kalu and Reese. Reese is showing a lot of improvement and a great attitude. All 3 will see significant playing time. Plus we get Godwin back. The juco point guard is exciting. Oliver was a 4star recruit coming out of high school for a reason. He can shoot.Look for Green to have a green light( shoot the ball ). Dickens has improved and is shooting the ball well. The big Greek can play. He has a lot of international experience and will play this year. Somebody compared him to Vasser (wrong ). For the first time since Jones has been our coach he can field a team with every position having someone who can score. I haven't forgotten Carver. He can't score but he does contribute. However I don't see him getting as many minutes this year as he has in the past I haven't heard anymore about another big man so what we have is probably it. What we have is enough. We will be fine this year. Will we be better than last year...yes...I think we will..also look for us to play a little more up tempo!
