I've never actually been to San Marcos, but I'm doing an internship in the Hill Country and the whole area is beautiful

No list of “beautiful college towns” could be complete without San Marcos on it. San Marcos is not only one of the most beautiful college towns in America, nay, The World. It is without a doubt: The Garden Spot of all Texas.

I’m sure that many of you are familiar with “The Good Book,” and Gawd’s creation of Eden as a home for Adam and Eve. If you’re also familiar with Mr. Webster’s good book, then you know that San Marcos is a synonym for Eden.

To those of you not fortunate enough to have ever looked upon San Marcos with your very own eyes . . . well, you have my sincere sympathy.

As someone who has visited many states and many countries, San Marcos is alright, but it's nowhere near a top-5-in-the-nation college town destination. It's pretty nice for Texas, but I actually like Austin better.

Austin ! Austin, you say . . . BLASPHEMY!

Having seen what pass for “athletic facilities” on that roadside spot you call a campus, I can understand why you might be “impressed” with a citified campus squeezed into a few blocks of downtown Austin, but I say again Sir, Blasphemy.

No spot on Earth is as fair as that campus nestled on the hills of San Marcos, and that Sir is a verifiable Fact. Or may Gawd strike me de

"No spot on Earth"? "Verifiable Fact"? Have you ever been anywhere else? Seriously! lol

I just did a search for most beautiful towns in Texas, and San Marcos didn't even come up in the top ten in any of the 7 results I looked at for Texas, much less a top 5 nationwide. Look, I'm not saying San Marcos isn't nice. But the way you talk about it makes it seem as though you really need to get out and do some traveling.

No need to bring up UTSA either. I'm not the one saying San Antonio should be in there. And no one is more frustrated by our lack of athletic facilities than our own fans and alumni are, but then our university hasn't been around for 120+ years either, nor changed its name half-a-dozen times.

It is a nice area. Many Germans settled that area because it reminded them of their homeland. When you do a search of the most beautiful towns in Texas, several of them are in the Hill Country. San Marcos, on the outskirts of that region, just doesn't come up on any of those lists though.

There's something I can agree with. But if someone hasn't been to very many places, that eye hasn't really seen much. This is a big, beautiful world we live in, and one of the best things we can do for ourselves, in our lives, is to open up that world and see as much of it as we can before we leave it.

Also, Asheville and Missoula should be on that list.

Assuming you're talking about Madison, have you ever been there, or is that a tongue-in-cheek comment without any basis? Madison has been rated consistently as one of the best and most beautiful college towns for years. And while I've never been there myself, I do have a colleague who graduated there, who'll attest to it.

Spent a lot of time in Madison. It is a spectacular college town.

How dare you throw Monroe in that conversation!! 03-lmfao

In all seriousness, Monroe has some nice areas and downtown would have potential with its old buildings and the river but not much of a tax base to support that and we have an idiot mayor who likes to talk about all the fast food jobs that have been created and blames opponents for the reason that Golden Coral built over in West Monroe. Yea, he ain't too smart. There is money in Monroe to start construction of several things but they are holding it back as long as Mayo is Mayor.

You don’t say, and I suppose that you’re the leading authority on “Globe Trotting?” How fortunate we all are to be able to benefit, albeit indirectly, from your wisdom and experience.
And since you’re slow to pick up on it, that was said with dripping sarcasm.
BTW, you really shouldn’t come onto a sports message board, and based upon a post or two that you had read to you (I’m certain that’s the case as you’re a product of nUTSAck), start making assumptions about the poster.
But whatev, it’s all in good fun, at least on my end . . .

Becoming a bit unraveled there? If I had meant for that comment to speak directly about you, I'd have said, "If Bobcat87 hasn't been to many places, that eye hasn't seen much". I was speaking in generalities, only to that quote. Everything isn't always about you. I apologize if I didn't refer back to you again afterwards and say that I didn't know where you've been, but I really didn't feel it necessary because I wasn't talking about you to begin with. I dislike people who make assumptions as much as most others, and you seem to have forgotten that in my very first comment to you, I asked you whether you've actually been to other places. You never replied though.

Now, I'm sure you've been to SOME other places, but these are your words... "No spot on Earth is as fair as that campus nestled on the hills of San Marcos, and that Sir is a verifiable Fact." I don't know you, so maybe you were using a bit of gift of gab in saying that, and didn't really mean it. But if you did mean it, and really think that Texas State/San Marcos is the most beautiful location on the planet, I'd be interested in knowing which other places you've been to.

And btw, I didn't once make a disparaging remark about your school, nor about your level of education. I don't operate that way. Yet you've gone there repeatedly with me. I happen to be from Germany originally, and learned English as a 2nd language, and the only thing I'll give you a heads-up about is that people can disagree and still remain civil. Try it sometime.

I agree that the city I live in is beautiful (voted #1 destination in the world 3 straight years now). However, it’s not what I would call a college town. You rarely see many attending sporting events and the main draw for students is that CofC is downtown and close to the beach. I’d say MUSC is a bigger and more appealing university than any of the 3 you mentioned (and not what you’d call a traditional college).

Nonetheless, Charleston is an amazing and wonderful city to raise my kids and have a career. Not taking anything away from it or what you said, but it’s really not a college town.

RE: 5 most beautiful college towns
I have spent time in both Boone and San Marcos. I spent the night in a dorm in Boone in 1970 when a friend and I competed in the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. He knew the kids whose room we stayed in.

Spent even more time in San Marcos. Both schools rank very high in beauty. I am thinking of pretty girls.

Overall I would rank Appalachian State as having the best background setting. SouthWest Texas State as best campus.

I would rank my home town of DeFuniak Springs as better than both except it's only college is a branch of NW Florida State.
