This. We don't add a new market for them. Moreover, the impediment is not just Ohio State- schools like Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern and Michigan State do not want us in the conference as those are the schools that would suffer the most by adding us (what little recruiting advantage they have over us would be gone).
As for the AAU designation, I don't see that happening either. The AAU is an invite-only organization. The AAU made a comment a couple years ago that they were looking to change their metrics because there were schools that met the metrics that they didn't want (UC, UAB, USF, etc.), while schools that focused mostly on liberal arts wasn't meeting them.
Frankly, from what I have seen I think the university has given up on its AAU aspirations as well. Seems like there is more of a move to be less selective in admissions and continue to swell enrollment.

I've said it before, Ono was flat out conning us with his AAU talk, and he knew it. To get an AAU invite, you have to be a lot better than simply better than the bottom public universities that are already in (who are viewed as legacy invites on the verge of being kicked out). Any new invite is probably going to need to measure across a broad range of metrics--not merely total research funding and med school rep--somewhere in the middle third of current public members. We're simply not there. There's probably only one public that is, and that's Utah. Until they get their invite, everyone else should just cool their jets, and I think that's exactly the realistic approach that Pinto and his administration is taking.

Increasing selectivity of admissions is the single best move a college can take to increase its reputation.

Or just ship the lesser admittees to branch campuses and pretend you are being more selective.

Like OSU. It's a very smart move, and UC is already equipped to adopt the same strategy.
