We're going to look like a lot different team in the coming years. Nice to see some change of philosophy.
I have been a die hard Bearcat fan since the Armory Fieldhouse days, through good times and tough times. Ain't gonna' dog Mick, but it was definitely time for a change. Also, if I never hear the term ROCK FIGHT in reference to Bearcat Basketball again...it will be too soon.
This. So much this.

Is there any among you who wouldn't take Gary Clark above anyone??
He's the epitome of what I want in a Bearcat, and a gentleman...
And Kyle Washington
And Kevin Johnson
And Tre Scott
And Troy Caupain
And the list goes on
We've had a remarkable share of great young men - both on and off the court - in this program over the past few years. I give Mick great credit for that.
Kevin Johnson? I wouldnt pick him

Well, obviously you'd rather see an offer list of Kansas, Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina rather than seeing that you outdueled Northern Kentucky, DePaul, Georgia State, Indiana State, IUPUI, Stephen F. Austin, Tennessee-Martin and VCU for the guy...
But, there are a lot of diamonds in the rough out there. It will all come down to coaching and player development. We've done a lot with not highly recruited guys before.
Lawrence North is a pretty good program in Indiana. Eric Montross came from there.

He was one of the largest jumps in ranking on 247 this past update and sits currently around 160. I am sure other large programs have interest, but considering the relationship he has with CJB dating back to basketball camps/NKU recruitment, it probably wasn't worth their time.

The only other UC basketball players of the last decade to be in the ESPN 100 were Jarron, Gary, and Lance...I'd say that's decent company. However, he is #95, not #82.

It's early but Brannen is starting to feel like Fickel. Really excited with the early returns.

Mick obviously brought in some talent. I think the main problem with his recruiting was:
A - Too many projects
B - Afraid to go after top 100 recruits
If you look at his recruiting from 2014-17 including transfers, it's a pretty nice 4-year cycle
Gary Clark
Jarron Cumberland
Jacob Evans
Kyle Washington
Justin Jenifer
Brendon Broome
Tre Scott
Nysier Brooks
Farad Cobb
Keith Williams
We won a lot of games with those guys. The thing is, we need to bring in a Clark, Cumberland, or Evans every single recruiting cycle if we are going to compete for championships. And Mick missed on way too many big man projects as well. We need big guys with skills, which I think Brannen will address over time.

Saunders is a Mick level recruit, one of the high 3/low 4 star range guys we tend to populate our roster with. Maybe a bit on the low side to judge by his offer list. Looks like a solid 4-year guy. Like his quickness and ability to push the pace. Needs to develop a reliable 3-point shot though. Could compliment MAW well (who is a better shooter, but less of a true PG).

So far I don't see a change in our recruiting, just a change in the way it is perceived by the fans. Mick went after 4 and 5 star guys, but the fans ignored that and talked about his comments on how you need to pick your battles.
Every player in the high 3/low 4 star range is going to be a project if you focus on his weaknesses. MAW needs to improve his handles/passing and show he can play true PG. Saunders needs to improve his 3 point shooting and is a bit undersized. Big men especially are generally projects due to limited supply. To get more skilled bigs you either have to get the 4/5-star guys or make a trade off and get less athletic bigs.
What is going to separate Brannen is his ability to develop players and mold his scheme to utilize his players strengths (which Mick wasn't very good at).

Mick refused to recruit grad transfers. He basically bad mouthed them on air. He could have used them over the last handful of years to put a team over the top.

I think this board's perception of UC's ability to land 4 and 5 star basketball recruits is crazy. Hopefully Brannen proves me wrong, but with the conference situation and our current path of *not cheating* there are a ton of obstacles to landing 4 and 5 star recruits.

He recruited (offered) one for 2019 though (KJ Feagin). And most coaches don't like grad transfers or even transfers. They prefer to develop guys within their own program.

I agree that top 50 recruits aren't going to start flooding the roster just because we have a new coach. However, I would like to see us land a guy in the 75-150 range every recruiting class and surround the centerpiece recruit with guys in the 150-250 range and/or 2-3 year transfers that can contribute. I don't think that's unrealistic for a program of our caliber.
And there's absolutely nothing wrong with 3-star recruits. I just want ones that don't take 3 years to contribute on the court. 1 year of adjusting before being a rotation player is fine, but 2-3 years is too long when you only have 13 scholarships available.
