People look at the rates but it's hard to shoot at a high rate when you're shooting a high volume. He shot 40% while firing 8 3's a game. I saw a scout quote from Jeff Goodman saying Jaeving was a great shooter with deep range. Assuming he's playing with McNeal and Jarron you've got a point guard who was a great distributor last year and one of the best passing off guards in the country. If Jaevin is as good as the scout said and as good as his numbers indicate I could see him shooting well over 40% and us being really scary with those three and Tre. Then you have options of going small Keith or Prince or bringing in Sorolla and going big. Really exciting options.
I'm still not convinced McNeal starts at PG. His stats are pretty bad in terms of three point shooting, FG% and assist/TO rate. I think our starting lineup will be Jarron, Jaevin, Keith, Scott, Diarra. If Diarra can hit threes at a good rate (which he should be able to), that lineup seems very difficult to stop. The defense will have to spread to cover the three and if they collapse there are a lot of good three point shooters to kick out to on the perimeter.
Diarra couldn't even hit 2's at a good rate. 27.6% on 2 point jumpers. It's an extreme stretch to say he can now hit 3's.
He's known as a good shooter in practice and a capable 3-point shooter. His main issue is not having experience playing organize basketball. He was uncomfortable last year and often hesitated to shoot, even good shooters look bad when they hesitate. He has a long way to go, but he has the offensive ability to be a excellent player. He is going to play a lot of minutes out of necessity, so I'm optimistic he will figure it out at some point this season.
In the Hepblade world, no player ever improves or has any abilities outside of his past statistics. Everyone on the board has access to player's past history. You would have been an awful coach. Fwiw, Diarra hesitant to shoot? He probably shot the ball more when he was on the floor than either of the other 2 bigs. His issue is he couldn't defend anyone.
Diarra did indeed have a higher usage rate than all the other bigs at 19.2. Brooks was 18.6, Scott was 16.9, Fredericks was 14.5, and Nsoseme was 10.4.

There is nothing to judge on if you don't go based on past statistics, I've noted numerous times that McNeal could be better then he looks. But he has two years worth of statistics at smaller schools that don't look all that good - one off year probably didn't make a huge difference. He put up good numbers at JUCO, well Frederick's was a great JUCO player and look how he turned out, so I don't much stock it that. Compare McNeal to Jaevin or Williams and I can't see any reason McNeal should be the starter.
Diarra was hesitant on the offense end as well as the defensive end. He often looked confused as to whether he should shoot or pass. He did shoot more than our other bigs, but it generally wasn't a smooth in rhythm shot. It was after he spent a second or two trying to decide what to do. He has a long way to go, but he's a better player right now than Sorolla and he has massive amounts more potential.

I think coaches, scouts, and recruiters go by the eye test, not stats or ratings.

Some maybe. Most modern coaches don't go by one or the other but use stats and the eye test in conjunction with each other.
I've heard Brannen talk about his use of stats in many areas. Another good coach to listen to talk about those kind of things is Buzz Williams.

Really? I was as big a critic of Mick's recruiting as anybody but I never made it racial. I just wanted basketball players with skills. Skin color shouldn't ever be a factor in evaluating a recruit.
Of course it shouldn't be a factor, but it apparently was one for Mick. Zero for 13 years, then the new coach magically signs a couple in his first month. There was something going on there...in Mick's head, that is.
I never really noticed the color of teams until UC played lily-white Iowa in the tournament. I thought to myself, "How odd."
What's interesting is the angle people here are taking: Mick couldn't recruit so he only got black players. Maybe Brannen is signing white players because at this point he's taking what he can get.

Brannen isn't after him to be a perimeter shooter. He wants him to push, push, push tempo. This kid gets a lot of points at the basket in transition, and it's a good bet that Brannen wants to surround him with shooters and get up and down the court. We're going to look like a lot different team in the coming years. Nice to see some change of philosophy.

I have been a die hard Bearcat fan since the Armory Fieldhouse days, through good times and tough times. Ain't gonna' dog Mick, but it was definitely time for a change. Also, if I never hear the term ROCK FIGHT in reference to Bearcat Basketball again...it will be too soon.
