Tavern on Lincoln
Chronicle Link

New restaurant/bar to open tomorrow in downtown DeKalb. Since I live in Sycamore, but frequent DeKalb I am excited for a new place. DeKalb has made efforts to revitalize downtown, I hope this can be a staple in the community.

Thanks 4 posting. I live in st. Charles and now plan to hit this one up on next date night. Want to do a little something for the community. We also like to hit Eduardo’s once in a while.

I really hope they don't mess this up by not advertising to students this fall. After the House cafe and O'Leary's closed this spring there was almost no reasons to go downtown. With the Tavern and Jamrah opening in downtown there's a really good opportunity to bring new students to downtown.

I don't live in the area, but visit for Huskie football games- this is very exciting for the DeKalb community. As a real estate investor/development, I cannot stress the importance of investing into the community and offering more entertainment venues for the locals to spend their hard-earned money...

Hopefully this establishment can make it!! I would advise them to open on Sundays for a multitude of reasons...

I've always thought downtown was a missed opportunity for promoting to students. They need to make it easier to get there with a direct route by bus to there. Quick and easy.

RE: Tavern on Lincoln
When I was a student at NIU, the downtown was much more vibrant. There were restaurants, pharmacies, variety stores, bars, and clothing stores (women's and men's). It's an easy walk from the dorms on a nice day. Several of us used to walk to downtown on a Saturday and shop, eat, or drink (or all three).

There were no cell phones or computers with internet to keep us glued to our dorm rooms. Cell phones and the internet have turned us into the "inside generation", where, as a whole, we no longer go out shopping or even to sporting events. Look at all the brick-and-mortar business closures (especially department stores). Stay inside, and the world comes to you.

Hmmm....

DF, wasn't there a fourth thing you did downtown? Maybe at one of the "variety" stores you mention?

Wasn't that a given.

Ahem...

That was relegated to the evenings with a cigarette, bottle of MD 20/20 or Boone's, a tube of hand cream, and a few rolls of quarters. After a while, I had to wear a hat because I got tired of bumping my head on the Shell No-Pest Strips.

Yes, I guess I spent a LOT of time downtown back then!

DogFan, was reading your post and agreeing with everything you said and then got to the last line, forced me to mention this change as well --- it amazes me how many places I still go with friends and see the constant coming and going of food delivery people. You can be at Portillo's, Fatty's, Eduardo's, hell, even McDonald's, and folks from an outfit called "Eat Street" (probably some other names as well) come and go like clockwork.
Hopefully, people will at least make an appearance at Tavern on Lincoln to get a menu and they can stay in business long afterward. I've got nothing against these folks trying to make money doing food delivery, but it now goes way beyond pizza delivery.
If you live in this town, aside from death, taxes, and Huskie football success, you can expect that for the first month a new place is open, you can barely get near it, and then the patrons appear to drop off a cliff. Hell I even remember cars backed up on Lincoln Highway around the corner on Annie Glidden forming a line to turn into Popeye's; now on a bad day you might be the third or fourth car at the drive-thru. Fingers crossed this place will last.

Food was good. About 20 beers on tap. Good menu

And there are two buses that go directly downtown from campus

Make sure you check your restaurant bill. All the DeKalb restaurants now have an automatic upcharge for using credit cards in the range around 4%. They will remove the charge if you pay in cash and ask them to remove the charge. I forgot what they call it but check your bill

Not true. There are a couple that used to do this but I haven’t see it in a long time. What places are you referring to?

I was at Rosita's last week and they listed the upcharge on my itemized bill.

Ok. Haven’t noticed that one but usually pay cash there. Not many other places do this though, if any. Card companies don’t want restaurants doing it either. Thanks for sharing.

I would be willing to bet most businesses, especially small ones, will be doing it sooner rather than later.
