Summer of 2019: Ghosts of College Football Games Past
It’s June 1. From now until opening night of college football’s landmark 150th season, let’s fill this thread with footage of college football’s past.

2000 Independence Bowl
Texas A&M vs Mississippi State

A rare blizzard sweeps through Shreveport in this eerie NYE classic. Two Southern-blood teams battle a whiteout and non-visible yard markers until overtime was decided on a blocked EP returned and lateral-ed for a deuce. Watch Jackie Sherrill take on his protege RC Slocum promising a “tell-all” book about his exit from College Station, Pork Chop Womack making a cameo, and MSU donning their now-retro helmets.

Jackie Sherrill vs. A&M was a great matchup to begin with. However, that game became awesome on multiple levels:
1) Mississippi State didn't normally wear all white uniforms, but wore them that night. They blended in with the snow.
2) Shreveport doesn't normally have whiteout conditions. They did that night. It looked like the teams were playing in Green Bay.
3) The game was competitive and entertaining. I doubt if many (if any) of those players had ever played in snow, and probably never did again.

This was a classic.

Not gonna post videos but a fewof my favs:

Appalachian St over #5 Michigan
obviously. App St looked like Ohio St out there

Central Michigan over Michigan St 2009
The best is listening to U of Michigan and Michigan St fans argue if losing to App St or Cent Michigan is worse

Ohio over Ped St 2012
The first game after the Penn St scandal came to light. Many had already pushed Ped St's scandal under the rug and were eager for redemption. Others recognized that with the scandal revealed, and Ohio being a pretty darn good team in itself, a L was the writing on the wall for Ped St

1995 Sugar Bowl, VT vs UT. Not because the game was especially remarkable, but because news broke that that an imposter had been playing for Texas the whole year.

A couple of years ago, we were in Boone, NC. (Great place, BTW) In front of the school, the sign for App State listed their FCS national championships. All I could think of was "They beat Michigan". The three national championships are a big deal for them. To those of us on the outside, we remember them beating Michigan in the Big House as an FCS team.

Northwestern keeps a bunch of very old games and highlight clips on their channel.

My favorite snow game was the 1997 MAC championship game-Marshall 34 Toledo 14. It wasn't that it was an exciting game. It was just a showcase by Randy Moss in his last regular season college game. 7 receptions for 170 yards and 3 TDs.

Lot of jokes around that.

We always knew John Mackovic didn't know how to recruit.

2001: #1 Oklahoma @ #2 Nebraska

63-yd flea flicker with 6:30 to go seals this classic rivalry.

We own some property about 45 minutes from Boone.

I agree, it is a great place.

1997 Missouri vs #1 Nebraska

Buzzer-beating, kickball TD reception decides a national champion. That play aside, this game was amazing start-to-finish. There’s something special about fall Saturday afternoons in the Big 8.

These three losses still haunt me... one from 20 years, another from 30 years ago and The Big East screwing over us in Morgantown:

WVU vs UofL 2005. Welcome to College Football Pat White

Southern Miss vs UofL 1989 - Brett Farve throws pass that bounces off helmet for TD

Louisville Southern Miss 1999 - Mills Kills

I watched Texas back in the day, and loved the McKelvey scandal. I think most fans really admired how much the guy wanted to play football. When I was at Austin the following summer, I went by the stadium store and actually bought McKelvey's helmet. It still has his number 24 written in sharpie on the inside by the ear hole. It sets on one of the shelves with the rest of my helmet collection, and when people ask why I have a Texas helmet with all of my North Texas helmets, I tell them the story of Ron McKelvey. Personally, I think Texas should retire his number, and I'd put the guy in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

1890 Baker (now NAIA) beat Kansas 22 to 9. The very first game in the state of Kansas. The way Kansas plays these days? They could lose to College of Faith. Joking.

It is fun to look back at historic scores and see lots of examples of this.

BTW, Baker to AAC for Football only

Sports Reference College Football

This have a lot of scores for all programs that are considered major colleges.

1939 New Mexico State 12-3 over Arkansas-Monticello
Northern Arizona 12-12 Western New Mexico
Detroit Mercy 20-t Central Michigan
Tenn. Tech 13-13 Vanderbilt
Catholic U. 12-0 South Caroline
Denver 6-0 Iowa State
Rhodes 32-0 Memphis
Gonzaga 6-0 Texas Tech
Marquette 17-14 Michigan State

This could be a reason why the big boys in the power 5 wants to split into divisions. They were tired of losing to smaller schools. Oklahoma State beat Central Oklahoma 29 to 6 in 1940. Where would some of these schools be today if they kept up with the big boys?

Definitely possible. But I think some of it is those Power 5 schools got more and more money as more and more time went on. Then Title IX caused even more schools to cut back.
And you're right: Power 5 losing to FCS or DII kind of schools was pretty common back in the day.

Also, Detroit Mercy has a National Championship in the highest level of football, although it's a shared title.
