DRC: "Unite North Texas" Campaign to Begin this Year
This article is actually about the third phase of the UNT Master Plan.
Phase 1- Build a new track/soccer venue- completed in 2018
Phase 2- Build an indoor practice facility for football- due for completion this fall 2019
Phase 3- Athletic center and academic center expansion, with remodel of Apogee's south end zone and new video boards

ARLINGTON — Wren Baker talked about big plans and ambitions Saturday, when the North Texas athletic department kicked off its annual coaches caravan at Texas Live! in Arlington.

[Image: ?u=https%3A%2F%2Fbloximages.newyork1.vip...mp;amp;f=1]

UNT’s athletic director named expanding the school’s athletic and academic centers through a grass roots fundraising campaign as a top priority in front of a crowd of several hundred fans and boosters. He also talked about “Unite North Texas,” the school’s promotional campaign for the upcoming school year.

Those talking points led up to the biggest ambition of all.

“Let’s take over this city,” Baker said.

Glad y’all are finally getting tough and gonna kick Texas Women’s University to the curb and fully take over the city of Denton!

Ha!

North Texas has 380,000 alums, and the largest portion live within a one hour drive from campus. By far the largest alumni base of any of the FBS universities in the DFW area.

From reading his comment, I think it will be interesting to see what marketing strategy emerges in Dallas over the next few months. It will also be interesting to see what SMU tries to do to counter our campaign.

UNT will never dominate the DFW any more than USF will ever dominate Tampa Bay. Despite pouring out legions of alumni, DFW will always care far more about what is happening in the Big 12 than anything else.

I think you underestimate the dynamics at play in the state of Texas.

Among Big12 programs in Texas, only the Longhorns carry statewide appeal, and their stranglehold on t-shirt fan support in Texas has been slipping over the last decade. Texas focuses on being the team for the entire state. If we focus our resources on expanding our presence in just the DFW Metroplex, we might be able to give them a run for their money, or at least get closer than any other FBS program. That is the best we can hope for.

Texas Tech, Baylor, and TCU gain a large majority of their support from their respected regions.

I think the main point is that we don't need to turn fans of other programs into Mean Green fans. We have enough alums in the Dallas/Fort Worth region to grow our presence all on our own, if we are truly committed to focusing our resources to that end.

I think it is important to note that our AD has reached every goal he has set for North Texas since arriving on campus (Every athletic program finished with a winning record this past season, new track/soccer stadium, & new indoor practice facility). I have no reason to believe he won't reach this one too. I'm sure he has a plan to dominate the DFW market, and it should be fun to watch it unfold.

You will never ever give Texas a run for their money in anything anywhere. Just not a realistic expectation.

I'm sure that is the opinion of most college football fans, but we are not currently focused on winning recruiting, field, or court battles with Texas. And, if that were are current goal, you would be absolutely right. We do not currently have the resources to do that, and we know it.

Our new campaign will be to acquire a larger "die-hard" fan base in the Dallas/Fort Worth region than any other FBS program. That would could do because of our numbers. Texas doesn't even focus on the state of Texas anymore. They think nationally, which is one of the reasons they have lost some t-shirt fans over. The Longhorns are not focused on influencing the DFW market. So, we have an opportunity, if we pursue it the right way. And, like I stated in my previous post, even if we come up a little short, we will still have elevated our program above most in our region.

Honestly, just getting your own alums to care would be huge. I have a couple younger family members who are UNT grads and they never went to any games, don’t own any merch and just couldn’t care less about the school.

Start changing people like them first and you’ll have a good base

That is the plan. We will see how our AD intends to do it.

Maybe you have not been looking for them when you drive down 35.

I worked in Fort Worth for 10 years, and over that time frame I saw more and more North Texas merch begin to appear on the road and at establishments.

The state of Texas has 3 power conference programs and 2 small private schools who don't belong.

The state of Texas has 3 programs who earned their way into their current power conferences and two that had to use political black mail to get in

I like the AD's attitude. It's a mountain of a task, but ALL G5 AD's NEED that attitude or, frankly, they shouldn't be the AD of a G5 program.

TCU earned their spot in the BIG 12. They invested in their program, won on the biggest stage, and they enjoy strong support from the Fort Worth community.

If you want to bad mouth Baylor and the tactics they used to advance their program, than I am on your side. The Bears should have received the SMU special when Briles and the administration got exposed.

They don't need to. DFW has 6M people. They just need a percentage of that.

tcu got lucky when aggy left. UH would've been a better add despite the arrogance from Fertitta.

What’s with the TCU bashing?

If you asked me to name a school in my lifetime who climbed the realignment ladder on merit, the Horned Frogs are first to come to mind.
