RE: 2020 Football Recruiting
We're hosting a pretty prestigious football camp this weekend, so expect a lot more news on the recruiting front shortly. I did see we've offered another one of the local kids from my kids' high school - Devin Gunter (Ridge Point, Class of 2020 athlete). Honestly, I don't recall what position he plays but the Ridge Point team will be pretty good this fall (probably their best team since making the state semifinals a few years back).

Good article about our TE commit.
Great article. Seems like exactly the kind of student/athlete we are looking for. I hope we can hang on to him.
Agree. He sounds like a great player and leader.
I did find this part interesting, too:
Quote:Exactly one month after Nate committed to Rice, he was scrolling through social media on his phone when he stumbled upon news about himself.
“I went to sleep a zero star,” Nate said. “And I was on Twitter and I saw my name on a Rice thing and it said, ‘Nate Kamper, 0 stars to 3 stars’ and I was like, what?
“I was so confused and I was sitting there thinking, what does this even mean?”
I guess it means either a) that he went from a nothing burger to a seriously good in the previous week or two ... or b) that the star ratings are more of a reflection of which colleges are interested in you than an independent assessment of how good a player you are.

My money is on b), but the usual impact of signing with Rice has been a move in the other direction.

My money is on © they don't know what they are doing, or (d) they didn't bother to check him out until he made news by committing, then rated him. Maybe (e) they flipped a coin, or (f) they effed up. Maybe (g), they walked into a door and saw stars.

Gunter committed tonight. Always happy to get the local players - I'll get to watch him play a bunch this fall. Nice family, his dad is a lawyer.

This is looking like it could be a really nice class. Above all, it looks like we are finally having some success where we have major needs.

So this week we received commitments from a CB who runs a 4.47 and a WR that runs sub 4.4 supposedly. I’ll take it!

Another commit - Trey Phillipi from Montgomery High School. Seems to be a bit of a late bloomer but he's a 6-5, maybe 6-6 OL who is still filling out. If nothing else, he'll make the all-airport team, but I think the staff is going to get a real keeper with him.

I'd never heard of an "all-airport team" before. But my friend Google told me the answer ... and then some: http://www.espn.com/dickvitale/vspeak/

The recruiting news is very encouraging.
Very encouraging. The coaches are obviously making a rather successful effort to upgrade the program. More speed and hopefully a few defensive linemen.

I remember a sports reporter saying Goldsmith recruited for speed, and that seemed to be working.
Yes it did. Goldsmith was very open about his preference of speed over size, particularly on defense. Those guys were quick. Our best two defenses were during Hatfield's first two seasons.

No. Our best defense was the nationally ranked defense of 1974, with Cornelius Walker and Rose fronting the defensive line, and Pringle doing the punting.
