Where does ESPNU pick? If P5s with their own ESPN channel no longer appear on ESPNU .... will ESPNU still even exist much longer?

ESPN-U doesn't "pick". The ABC/ESPN/ESPN-2/ESPN-U/ACCN are all one big tier. The folks at ESPN make all the selections at one time. In terms of priority, they will normally follow the path your are mapping out (best games on ABC & ESPN, then ESPN-2, and so forth). But, there could be times the better ACC game is in the 12pm ESPN slot over a 3:30 ABC slot based on how ESPN perceives what other games are on other networks and so forth.

For example, if #1 Clemson is playing at #2 Georgia in the 3:30 CBS/SEC game, ESPN likely isn't putting the best ACC game in a 3:30 ABC slot.

RE: ACC Network
One more thing, ESPN is going to likely throw more quality FB games early on to the ACCN than they will in follow-on seasons. They did this with the SEC when the SECN debuted as well. The rationale is they want to get as many cable, satellite, and online (e.g., YouTube TV) companies on board in terms of distribution.

They are intelligently going to schedule more attractive games early on to entice those companies who haven't already jumped on board to do so and/or have the subscribers of those companies raise hell to create demand (or jump ship which will get the message across perhaps even more). Once ESPN determines it has captured about as many as they hoped for (hopefully sooner rather than later), you'll likely see a shift as this upcoming FB season goes or certainly by 2020 where they put the least attractive games on ACCN after designating the better ACC matchups to ABC/ESPN/ESPN-2. Again, this is consistent with what they did with the SECN. Note, I don't think ESPN-U will be used much for ACC games moving forward.

This is the strategy for FB. The same idea is already scheduled for opening night of the hoops season with ACC matchups already announced. Going to 20 MBB (from 18) and to 18 WBB (from 16) conference games adds inventory. We will see more games in December moving forward, but this year they are making a statement on opening night/week to help drive any demands that is yet fulfilled in the first few months of getting providers on board.

note: stress to your friends, fellow message board fans, etc., if they leave a provider for another one because their provider doesn't offer ACCN, then they should make that VERY clear to their departing provider...those providers will only act if they feel $$$ and market share leaving to competitors...being a Comcast/Xfinity subscriber, I'm looking straight at you Comcast over the next 3 months!!!!!

RE: ACC Network
If the ACCN is going to show exactly 40 football games this year, it seems like there are going to be a lot of weeks with only 2 games. There are currently 5 games scheduled for the first week, 5 games for the second week, and 4 games for the third week. If my math is correct, that leaves 26 games to be aired over the 11 remaining weeks. That would allow for four weeks to have 3 games and seven weeks to only have 2 games.

So, assuming that is correct, what are your guesses on the kickoff times for those seven weeks? Would it be something like Noon and 4 PM, or 4 PM and 7:30 PM, or Noon and 7:30 PM, or something else?

I would prefer 3:30 and 7:30 for maximum attendance. If there are any noon kickoff games, those should be on ESPN or ABC.

Makes sense really. Take Week 6 (Oct. 5) for example. There are only 4 games involving ACC teams that week - all inter-conference games (6 teams are off). BC@UofL, Pitt@Duke, UNC@GT, and VT@MIA. Gotta figure one of those at minimum ends up on one of the ESPN networks. Another likely goes to RSN, assuming the ACC has a commitment to that package of at least 1 game a week (which I have no proof that is the case). Then again, 2 of those 4 games could wind up on some of ESPN/ESPN-2/ESPN-U/ABC. That likely leaves 2 games for ACCN, perhaps only 1.

Week 9 (Oct. 26) has a similar situation with 5 ACC games (no OOC games) and 4 teams off that weekend. And, some pretty good games that will garner ESPN/ESPN-2/ABC consideration along with maybe a committed one game to the RSN.

Those seem like the 2 most likely weekends where the ACCN will only televise 2 games (and perhaps just 1). To your question, I'd think 3:30/4:00 and then 7:30. While fans are all over the map in what their preferences are for start times, I'd think if you put it to a vote the 3:30 slot is the most popular (guessing near 50% would vote for that) and evening would be second most popular (guessing 35% would vote for that). Some folks like noon, but I'd guess it is a much smaller minority who do. Of course, TV doesn't always do what the fans prefer unfortunately.

RE: ACC Network
Adding a little more to my reply above...

Week 10 (Nov. 2) has 7 games involving ACC teams. However, one of them is VT@ND, which will be on NBC. Another is Wofford@Clemson. Maybe because Clemson is the king of CFB these days that game winds up in a noon ACCN slot, but it also could be streamed via ACCNE (or televised via RSN). Point being, that's another weekend that may only see 2 ACCN games - Canes play at FSU and that's normally an ABC/ESPN game.

Week 12 (Nov. 16) has 5 games on Saturday involving ACC teams. There is a Thursday ACC game that week (UNC at Pitt) on ESPN. One of those 5 games is Alabama State at FSU. Like the Clemson comment above, that game may wind up in a noon ACCN slot if it isn't streamed via ACCNE (or televised via RSN). VT at GT as well as UofL at NC State could be games that end up on ESPN/ESPN-2/ABC.

2 more weekends where I won't be surprised if the ACCN only gets 2 or 1 games...while keeping in mind my assumption is there will be 1 RSN game each week.

RE: ACC Network
As mentioned in another thread, Matt Sarzyniak is the best in keeping up with college FB and MBB TV schedules (IMO). Certainly worth following his tweets and website for those who don't already.

This morning he released his spreadsheet that he populates with the various network windows. It is pretty interesting. Matt takes the time to look at what other sports are plugged into those windows and how that may affect the FB and MBB schedules for each network. For instance, ESPN has a contract to televise some MMA matches in certain windows on weekends in the fall. Matt takes that into account when predicting which CFB games will appear where/when.

Here's his spreadsheet FWIW... https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...1853074254

IIRC there are 17 RSN games, so some weeks that means 2 games for them...

Makes sense. Week 4 (Sep. 21) would be a good candidate. There are 9 games involving ACC teams that day which the ACC/ESPN has TV control. BC plays at Rutgers, but the ACC/ESPN would not have rights on that one.

Week 10 (Nov. 2) would be next as there are 6 games under ACC/ESPN control.

Start time preference also varies with the season and venue. At GT they want the games to start late late late to start the season. It's cooler outside and playing at BDS under the lights with the skyline is a unique environment. (And a more formidable one ... strange things happen to good teams who play night games at BDS.) When things start getting cold in November though the preference is for a 3:30 kick.

Yep. I guesstimate 80-90% of CFB fans not only have noon kickoffs as their least favorite, but they actually label it as "evil". 04-cheers

Just glad the ACC is in the eastern time zone as 90% of the Big 12-2 and near half of the SEC and Big 10+4 are used to 11:00/11:30am local time kickoffs a few times each season. Yuck. 03-puke

I have been informed by others on this site that I will be getting the ACCN whether I want it or not, and even that I am already paying for it even though it hasn't launched yet. I infer that from a post stating that ACCN will be bundled with all ESPN channels on Spectrum in North Carolina, my current provider, and that I won't be paying more when that channel launches. Since I assume that ESPN intends for subscribers to pay for this service, I must conclude that they have already increased their subscriber fee to cover this.

I am now searching for a provider that won't require that I subscribe to the ACCN in order to get ESPN1 and ESPN2 (the only channels I am interested in). I'm afraid I may have to drop ESPN altogether to avoid the ACCN.

In the state of NC you're probably going to have to drop ESPN completely to avoid the ACCN.

I on the other hand told Google to take a long walk off a short pier and switched from YouTubeTV to PS Vue explicitly because of the ACCN. And I let both services know that.

I'm surprised there's been no announcement on that yet. I'm still holding out. But I wouldn't turn on either until late August anyway!

RE: ACC Network
The ACCN should look into acquiring the rights of broadcasting older shows and movies that would appeal to sports fans. There are already channels that already specialize in certain niche programming like Sci-Fi (Comet tv), Westerns (Grit), Baby boomers (MeTV), etc.

My vision would be a channel with movies like Major League, Days of Thunder, The Longest Yard, Remember the Titans, the Blind Side, etc. in between live ACC sports events as more or less filler. There could be a continuous news feed or score ticker that runs continually or every 15 minutes to update the women’s volleyball, field hockey, soccer or whatever. Might even have a 3 minute highlight show at the top of the hour of all the action of that day.

What I am proposing is a way of not only keeping the casual ACC fan watching the channel, but also attract the non-ACC fan if there is a good movie playing occasionally.
